Book Report – May
Historical Fiction

You will receive 3 grades on this report:
Social Studies based on your research of a historical topic
Language Arts based upon your oral report, research skills and completed report board
Reading grade based on the book report and understanding of elements of historical fiction

1) You will choose an historical fiction book.  The book must be completely read by May 24th!!!
2  Using your historical fiction book, you will research the historical topic that your book is based upon (for example, if you are reading a fictional book about World War II, you will research a topic related to World War II
3)  You will narrow down your research to a single topic.  For example, instead of researching World War II (you could go on forever!!), you will choose a specific area of World War II (such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor or D-day, etc.).  I must approve the topic.
4) After researching your historical time period, you will create and give an oral report of 2-4 minutes on the topic.  Your oral report will NOT be on your historical fiction!  It will be on the historical TOPIC.

The Oral Report:
-Will be 2-4 minutes in length
-You MAY NOT read off of a written report!!  You will use 3x5 index cards with notes written according to what you’ve learned in Language Arts (I will teach you and you will use your ELA book as a reference).  Cards will be collected and used towards your grade
-You may use props, pictures, video (of 30 seconds or less), overheads or even Powerpoint
-You will mention at least 10 items that discuss your historical time period
-You will be graded on how well you speak, how well you’ve researched your topic (including answering audience questions!)

The Display Board
5)  You will create a display board that includes at LEAST the following items:
a picture or illustration relating to the time period researched (with caption)
    a map (with title)
a graph OR chart (with title)
a timeline with at least 4 dates and events (with title and proper annotations)
at least 10 historical facts about your time period (not including items above)

6)  Using a tri-board, the LEFT and CENTER panels will be for your historical research.  The right side is for your historical fiction book report

The Book Report

7) You may display it any way you wish.  It will include:
-Title, Author, publication date, illustrator (if there is one)
-at least 3 people, events, places or topics in the book that make it historical and how those things relate to the historical time period.  For example, in the book, A Boy at War, the boy is fishing at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese airplanes fly overhead and he watches as the USS Arizona is destroyed.  (The USS Arizona was destroyed at Pearl Harbor on Dec, 7th 1941…That would equal one of the three historical facts needed.
-  at least 3 people, events, places, topics that make the book fictional.  For example, although this event really took place, the boy in the story above is not a  real person but a made-up character in the book.
