I can’t believe it is October already! The children are doing such a good job with Reading and Math--I am so proud of them! I always say, “We still need to practice because practice makes perfect and God is the only perfect one so we have lots of practice to do.”
The story for this week is Dan‘s Pet. The spelling words: hen, pen, men, end, send, set, all, call, very, that. The bonus words are: pumpkin and spider. The vocabulary words are: day, every, her, said, was, with. The sentences are: I will call that hen to the pen. Did he send all the men to the set? Word building cards are: a, c, d, e, h, (2)l, m, n, p, r, s, (2)t, v, y. As you have seen, a Book-It activity came home for the month of October. Your child is to read one book, or you can read to him/her, then complete the sequence of events pumpkins by writing a sentence and drawing and coloring a picture for each event. Make sure your child writes his/her name, the title of the book, and the author of the book on the first page. When it is completed, your child will receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Mmmm! Also, a handwriting packet came home for practice. Please remind your child to use the top, middle, and bottom lines for the tall letters and uppercase letters; use the middle and bottom lines for the lowercase letters. I do grade the handwriting using the spelling test, but I also look at everyday work too--coloring inside the lines and neatly is included in the handwriting grade.
In Math, we are continuing to learn and practice our math facts to 12. We began the addition of 3 digits on Friday and will continue on Monday. Then we will be reviewing for our test on Friday. (I hope.) I do apologize for sending home the math packet so early before we did several of the lessons in school--I promise not to do that again. This is a new Math series and I was thinking that it would still take 2 weeks to finish a chapter--I was wrong. What our old book did in two chapters, this one does in one chapter. The children are catching on to the concept of addition and we will continue to practice the facts throughout the year using a variety of methods--games, manipulatives, number lines, etc. The children should be able to recall the facts quickly by the end of the year. When you are with your child in the car, at the dinner table, or wherever, ask him/her math facts for practice. This will help him/her to recall the facts quickly when playing games or completing worksheets.
In Science, we are learning about living and nonliving things. We will be learning about animals and their habitats. A project for your child and family to do will be coming home next week. In the past, the children have loved doing this project while learning a lot.
In Religion, we are continuing to learn that Jesus worked among the people to teach them about God’s love for everyone, that God watches over us and cares for us, and that He, and Jesus, help all that are in need.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Have a great week!
Lynn Roberto
