********QUICK UPDATE ABOUT FIRST IN MATH ********
I just looked on the rankings and our class is now ranked 21st in the state at the platinum level.  I am just so proud of these kiddos!!! They kept talking about it at lunch and asked me to check...I was quite impressed! I bet you are too!!
****************************************************************************************************

Well the weekend wasn’t the best weather but I do love it when it gets cooler.  Can you tell I am from western Pennsylvania?  What can I say about the Steelers….I can quite honestly say our defense was the best!  I just love Troy Polomolu…he is the greatest! I guess games have been won without a touchdown, but I don't remember one.....

We will be having our annual Thanksgiving “mini – feast” with our 8th grade prayer partners on Wednesday, November 26th.  I sent a note home in the Friday folders to explain what we do.  If you have time to make a small loaf of bread (any kind and when I say “make” I mean from a box or Giant’s bakery) it would be greatly appreciated.  We also need juice, napkins, and cups.

Conference papers also went home in the Friday Folders.  If this time does not suit…please let me know and I will change it to a more convenient time.

This will be my last update before Thanksgiving…did I just say that?  Next week, we only have two full days, so dialogue journals won’t go home and we won’t have new spelling words either.     Next week is Thanksgiving and then it is just all down hill as far as keeping everyone’s mind on schoolwork at least until after Christmas. I know I said this before but how can I compete with someone who gives out toys?  We will try our best, but it is always a struggle.

Our next story in Language Arts is “At Play, Long Ago and Today.”  It discusses how children lived long ago and how we live today…boy things sure have changed.  By now you received the At Play, Long Ago and Today project paper that was in your child’s Friday folder.  My daughter did a project such as this when she was younger and I still have it….it is a precious keepsake.  My daughter is now in college and she still remembers talking to my mother (she is 88) about how things were when she was young.  If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.  We will also be reviewing singular possessive nouns.  We have new spelling, robust, and high frequency words.  The students really seemed to like the way we did the robust words last week I am going to try to keep this going.  I am adding the high frequency words this week.  They will be on different color paper so you will be able to distinguish between the two.  Dialogue Journals will also go home.

We are finishing up graphing and will begin our unit on money this week. (Just in time for the holidays….maybe your child can help you count the change you have…if your purse is like mine at this time…it isn’t much change, but we do like to start small in second grade)   We will start by reviewing the value of each coin and then move on to counting coins.  Eventually we start to give change.  I don’t know how long this will take.  It depends on how quickly we understand these concepts.  Please practice with your child at home.

Most children should have come home and told you that we went to the computer lab to work on First In Math.  This was the identification card I gave to you on Back To School night.  If you are having problems connecting, please let me know and I can help you.  Some of our students are up to 650 stickers already!  I have added the link to the list below.

We continue to talk about being friends with Jesus during Religion class.  We also will talk about good and bad choices. We will have a quiz on Wednesday.  Our next unit will talk about sin.  The book introduces sin as “saying no to God.”  I think this is a good way to explain it to your children.

Keep in mind that First Reconciliation is on Friday, February 20th at 6:30.  If you are planning on your child making his or her reconciliation at STMM and you are not a member of this parish, he or she needs a letter from your parish priest.  Please get those in as soon as possible so we don’t overlook anyone when making plans.

Next Tuesday, November 25th is our free turkey dinner.  The students really enjoy this lunch (and so do I.)  This is free so everyone can enjoy this yummy lunch!

I wish you all the best and happiest of holidays.  Enjoy your family and friends…don’t sweat the small stuff….cranberry sauce does not come out of your grandmother’s antique tablecloth, but the look on your grandmother’s face when your child spills it……..priceless.  Things are replaceable…family is not.  Enjoy the holiday!

God Bless,
Angela B.
