Academic Chemistry / Honors Physical Science
Course Guidelines and Information
2007-2008 School Year
Mrs. Webb
Materials:
1. Three ringed binder
2. Hi lighter
3. blue/black ink pen, red ink pen
4. no. 2 pencil
5. calculator with an exponent key – graphing calculators (i.e. Texas Instruments Ti-83, Ti-85 and plus versions) are NOT permitted for use on tests!)
Absence and assignments:
You are responsible for everything that you miss during your absence. All work completed in your absence is posted daily on the Internet at www.schoolnotes.com, so there are no excuses or incomplete/missing assignments will be accepted. If extra time is needed for
assignment completion due to an extended absence, please see me privately. If you do not hand in an assignment on time, and your absence was UNexcused, I will take 25% off of the grade you would have gotten had it been turned in on time. I DO NOT accept late work.
Absence on test or quiz days:
If the student is absent on the day a test or quiz is given it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with me to take the quiz or a make up test by filling out a make up request form. This is to be scheduled the day that you return to school. For every day that you do not make the necessary arrangements, or if you fail to show up at the scheduled time, 10 points will be deducted from your grade.
Most, if not every, test is returned (graded) the day after the test is given. This is to give students the opportunity to review their mistakes and assess weakness before moving on to the next unit of material. Thus, make up tests are completely different in format from the tests given on the scheduled testing day.
Assessments:
• TESTS (100) – one major test per unit, including 3 Quarterly Progress Assessments (QPA) and one cumulative final. The QPA assesses the material covered during each quarter and is worth 10% of the marking period grade, but the final is worth 20% of the fourth period grade. Each marking period grade is then equally weighted in determining the final grade for the course (25% for each quarter).
• QUIZZES (15-50) – quizzes are almost always unannounced
•
Academic Chemistry
2007-2008 School Year
Grading and Classroom Behavior
Mrs. Webb
Your grade will be determined by the following ratio:
TOTAL POINTS EARNED / TOTAL POINTS OFFERED
It’s all about the points!!
You will receive points for:
TESTS 100 points
QUIZZES 15-50 points
HOMEWORK* 10 points
LABS 25-50 points
ASSIGNMENTS** points vary
* HOMEWORK is either complete (10 points) or incomplete (0 points). I will not deduct points for incorrect homework answers.
** ASSIGNMENTS include class work, selected warm ups, and special projects.
➢ Bonus points will be awarded and can be used as extra credit on tests only. Be sure to sign the back of your bonus point so that no one else can use them.
A Few Loose Ends to Tie Up
➢ BONUS POINTS can be used on tests only. Bonus points will not be accepted for any other assignments.
➢ You are to be on your best behavior for any substitute that is in the classroom. If I receive an excellent report from the substitute, each student will receive one bonus point If you should choose to misbehave while a sub is in the classroom, you will be given a detention.
➢ Anyone caught cheating will receive an automatic grade of zero.

1. a) speed - distance per unit time.
b) average speed - total distance divided by time
c) instantaneous speed - speed at any instant (think speedometer)
d) velocity - speed and direction
e) constant velocity - no change in speed or direction
f) vector quantity - magnitude and direction
h) force - a push or a pull
i) Net force - sum of all forces acting on an object
j) acceleration - change in velocity per unit time
k) Newton's 1st Law - objects in motion stay in motion, objects at rest stay at rest unless an outside unbalanced force acts on it.
l) Newton's 2nd Law - objects will accelerate in the direction of the net force. Acceleration is directly proportional to force and inversely proportional to mass.
m) Newton's 3rd Law - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
n) Mechanical equilibrium - net force is zero.
o) Mass - amoutn of matter in an object.
p) weight - force of gravity on an object directly proportional to mass.
q) interia - tendency of an object to resist change in motion.
r) gravity - attractive force between two objects.

QPA answer key
Study Guide Answer Key:
1. IV – part of the experiment that you are testing (changing).
2. DV – part of the experiment that you are observing.
3. The effect of …. IV on …. DV.
4. If the … IV then the… DV.
5. Control – the part of the experiment you design so that you have something to compare your results to.
6. Constants – what you do not change in your experiment. This should be everything except for your IV.
7. Trials – how many time you repeat a part of your experiment.
8. no question
9. There are too many IV’s! Either change amount of salt, or amount of water – NOT BOTH!
10. Title – The effect of the amount of salt on the boiling point of water.
Hypothesis – if I increase the amount of salt in a constant volume of water, then the boiling point will increase.
IV: Amount of salt (g)
Level: 10g, 20g, 30g, 40g, 50g
Trials: 3 3 3 3 3
DV: Temperature at boiling
Constants: Amount of water, source of heat, size of container, balance
Experimental Error:
1. IV is plotted on the x-axis
2. DV is plotted on the y-axis
3. The effect of… IV on DV.
4. Graph points so that time is on the x-axis and temperature is on the y-axis. Draw a straight line that passes through all of your points as evenly as possible.
5. Pick two points on your line THAT ARE NOT DATA and calculate change in y divided by change in x.
6. A line that has a steeper slope would represent a classroom that heats up more quickly.
Density:
1. Density is equal to 4 g/mL.
Newton’s 1st Law of motion
1. My book will stay on the table unless I apply an unbalanced force on it in order to create movement. A space station releases waste into space. That waste will continue to travel in a straight line and at a constant velocity until it comes in contact with an unbalanced force.
2. Magnitude and direction.
3. 450 N
4. 40 N forwards.
5. 780 N
6. 12.5 m/s2
7. speed and direction are not changing.
8. a) 15 N; b) 300 m/s2
9. 0.5 m/s2
10. F = 30 kg x 9.8 m/s2 = 294 N
11. v = a x t; v = 9.8 m/s2 x 4 s = 39.2 m/s
12. 5 m/s2 x 5s = 25 m/s

19. fission - splitting of atoms, occurs in our nuclear reactors; fusion - combining of small atoms into a large one, occurs on the sun, minimal pollution.
20. 1:1 what type of decay will occur if ratio is too low (know this!) and what type of decay will occur if it is too high (know this!).
21. Alpha particles are equivalent to the nucleus of a helium atom, they have two p and two n, they have relatively low energy and can be blocked by a sheet of paper. Alpha particles change the mass number by 4 and the atomic number by two. Beta particles are the equivalent of an electron, then have a negative charge and virtually no mass, they have medium energy and can be blocked by Al foil or a thin piece of wood. Beta particles do not change the mass number, but do increase the atomic number by one (that is because a neutron has been converted to a proton in the nucleus!!!!) Gamma radiation is the most damaging form of radiation, it has no mass or no charge and it is pure energy, it can be partially blocked by several feet of concrete or lead. Gamma radiation does not change the mass or atomic number of an atom.
