Dear Parents,
Congratulations to the Third Class for raising the most money for the UNICEF campaign! Kudos for coming in second for box tops(754)! I am so proud of all of them! Their enthusiasm and generous spirit are true signs that the children are living out what we are learning in our Religion Class.
Tomorrow is a "FREE, BONUS, GIFT" dress down day. The children are to wear their PHILLIES colors in support of our favorite baseball team. They can wear jeans or school sweatpants AND sneakers. I hope you had the chance to see the front page of the Catholic Standard & Times with a great picture of some of the children showing their PHILLIES SPIRIT!
Today we had the Blessing of our PEACE POLE. You might want to ask your child where it is located and why it is so visible for all to see.
Our classroom has been a "buzz" preparing for our various tests this week. The beekeeper has been buzzing with a variety of questions.
The children did a wonderful job on their Science Test. I was so happy with their creativity that I am sharing them with Sr. Theresa.
I will be giving the children a Reading Theme test on Friday, 11/13. I will be sending home a packet of their vocabulary words stapled for you to help review with them in their "H" folder on Monday.

Mrs. Halverson, our first grade teacher, has asked us to post the following on our schoolnotes about a French Class/Club she hopes to start here at our school.
Parents,
Bonjour! I would like to start an introductory French Language class for St. Gen’s students! Students will learn the basics of French language,
and common words and phrases. We will explore French culture through music, art, and other fun activities. I hold my Bachelor’s Degree in French and I am certified to teach French. I would love to be able to
teach your children to appreciate another language and culture.
The first session of classes will run for 6 weeks, from the 2nd week of November through mid-December on either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons after school. The class is open to all grades. The cost will be
approximately $18 for the 6 weeks.
If you would be interested in having your child join the Introduction to French class, please e-mail me at jhalverson@stgens.com.
Merci!
Mrs. Halverson
Enjoy your 3 day weekend!
Peace,
Maria Foley

Dear Parents,
Many thanks for all of the Box Tops, ink cartridges and money donations sent in for the UNICEF collection. We kept a running count of the number of Box Tops as well as a running count for our UNICEF donations. The class was delighted each time they had to change the count.
The children have been writing couplets about Halloween and/or Fall in their writing copybooks. They are so clever and enjoyable to read.
The children are almost finished word processing their Flat Stanley stories. We have paired shared our stories and in technology class they are learning how to make corrections using the suggestions and/or corrections they discovered needed to be made on their final draft. In Art class, they have been working with Mrs. Gallagher decorating their posterboard for their 5 pictures to be glued on for their display.
There will NOT be a Social Studies test tomorrow. I am short 4 textbooks and they haven't arrived yet so I made a study sheet for the class. I will tape it into their copybook for them.
Tomorrow afternoon, the children will make their Halloween craft. I will send them home on Wednesday after they have all dried.

A Pumpkin Prayer
Father in heaven, like a farmer, you have watched
me grow
And picked me out from all the rest to house
your light and glow.
Open my mind to think of you.
Open my mouth to sing.
Open my eyes to see your world and share the joy
you bring.
Open my heart to be your home-- a warm and
welcome shell, washed clean of sin.
A place wherein your love and light may dwell.
Let your light shine before others,
So that they may see your good works
And give glory to your Father in heaven.
May you and your family have a "BOOtiful" week.
Peace,
Maria Foley

Dear Parents,
In today's communication envelope you received a Progress report about your child as well as a letter with information about conferences. Please share the "Good News" with your child and return both forms in the envelope provided by me.
You also received a flyer about net week's Home & School Meeting slated for Thursday, October 22nd at 7 PM in the Parish Hall. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Louis DeAngelo whose topic is entitled "Today's Learners...Tomorrow's Leaders. He will examine the world in which children live and the learning they need to successfully navigate it for life." I am looking forward to listening to what Dr. DeAngleo has to share with us! Hope to see many of you there as well.
The children looked great all decked out in their PHILLIES attire! I took some pictures of them this morning at our morning meeting. You should ask them how we opened our meeting this morning.
Monsignor Matz was so surprised at our celebration for him for his 25th Anniversary as an ordained priest. The video was great, the stole presented as their gift was beautiful and the words from the Student Council on behalf of the school were touching. The class made cards for him which were awesome! Our Peace Ambassadors presented them to him.
Due to our celebration today we didn't get to the lab so I have scheduled the class to go to the lab twice net week.
The UNICEF box has a place of honor on my desk. The children's generosity is very touching.
Sr. Theresa came in to our class this morning and told the children how grateful she was for their being such good role models for the second graders at lunch time. I am so proud of them!
You received a lot of papers in your communication envelope. Be sure to sign them and send them back so I can make a study packet for chapter 2 for Friday's math test. I would suggest the children do the Review/Test on p. 39 in their textbook. I will have them bring home their whiteboards to practice on for their test.
I had them bring home their spelling copybooks tonight so they could see what words they had to review from their pretest.
We had a Religion Bee this morning and they know they need to review for tomorrow's test. Again, I will read it to them.
Keep those BOX TOPS coming as they will be collected on Friday, October 23rd.
Many thanks to those of you who continue to send in the ink cartridges as well as the Acme receipts.
I am having problems with my email again. It seems when they come through schoolnotes they take longer to come to my mailbox. Therefore, I would suggest you send an email directly to me not through schoolnotes.

October 9, 2009
Dear Parents,
Many thanks to those of you who were able to bring your child to the 10 AM Liturgy last Sunday. The children were so gracious and wonderful greeters to all who came into Church! I was so proud of them!
We are almost finished another Religion Chapter. We have been focusing on Jesus and how he taught by his example and how he wants us to treat others. We will have a test on Thursday, October 15th. We have also been learning about the Rosary. Today, we prayed the Rosary together using the Joyful Mysteries. Each child has a Rosary Packet that I made for them about the Rosary.
We are moving along in math. We have begun the times tables for 2 and 5. You might want to ask them about a neat way for the 5x table that we have in our home and about the 2x table and parts/pairs of our body. I am hoping to have another math test on Chapter 2 on Friday, October 16th.
We had a wonderful time in the lab this week. We modeled 2 layers of the skin to see how the UV light affects our skin after being exposed to it for short and long periods of time. The class did a wonderful job on their science test. I have shared them with Sr. Theresa so she can see their progress because I was so delighted with the results.
We have been working very hard on our listening skills, following directions and being cooperative with everyone we meet. The class did a great job with today's Fire Drill. Sr. Theresa came in and told them what a great job they did. I was so proud of them!
I ask that you have your child check and make sure they have all of their pencils sharpened BEFORE coming to school. The pencil sharpener has become quite popular in the morning.
If your child has a bathroom need of more than twice a day I need to be made aware of it as I have some going 4 or more times a day as it would be most appreciative and helpful to me. (I told them I was going to put this in the schoolnotes.)
Starting Wednesday, October 13th, there will be a UNICEF box in our classroom. We are asked to participate in the Trick or Treat UNICEF Program during the month of Ocotober. The class is encouraged to donate their money to give children the best hope for survival because every day an estimated 25,000 children die from preventable diseases. There is more information available on the UNICEF website: uniceusa.org/trickortreat. Thank you for your support.
I didn't get a chance to put + in their homework book but I will do so on Tuesday BUT I want you to be aware that everyone received a + for listening and following directions for the Fire Drill and a + for being cooperative in GYM class today. I am so proud of them!
Don't forget to send in your boxtops, Acme receipts and ink cartridges.
I know you received a letter stating the changes they are being made on the school notes in the Communication Envelope on Wednesday. I have not made the change yet but I am getting ready to do so.
Please refer to those papers as they are a great guide to the new system. I will let you know when I will be converting to the new system.

September 30, 2009
Dear Parents,
In today's communication envelope you received papers that I checked for your child please sign them and return them to me so I can file them for your child.
For tomorrow's Math test I sent home with your child their textbook and copybook to help review. You can use page 21 in the textbook and have your child answer the questions orally as that would be a great way to review.
We had a terrific time in the lab today. We used a hand lens and examined our skin and then studied an orange and made some comparisons. We fingerprinted our thumb and the orange and did some more comparing. Finally, we used a medicine dropper with water and did some more comparing. Finally, we were able to compare the different layers of our skin to that of an orange.
We will write our conclusions based upon what we recorded for our observations in class.
The children have been working diligently on their Flat Stanley story. Some have begun proofreading and editing. Hopefully, tomorrow they will all be at that stage.
We, also, spent some quiet time at Adoration remembering all of our prayer intentions recorded in our Prayer Journal.
If your child is the oldest or only child in our school you recieved a lot of important information.
Many thanks to those parents who sent in their
Handbook and Technology Forms for your family.
As we enjoy the beautiful season of Autumn I would like to share this blessing I recieved over the weekend with all of you!
May the God of AUTUMN be with you,
mellowing you, tenderizing you,
sensitizing you to the inner stirrings
of the Spirit within you.
And may your loving response to God's
movement in your life enhance the
splendor of autumn's brilliance.
May the blessing of Autumn be upon
you and your family.
Peace,
Maria Foley
September 24, 2009
Dear Parents,
I know the first day of Autumn was the other day but it feels like summer to me!
We had a wonderful review for our Religion Test tomorrow by having 2 Religion Bees and completing a puzzle.
The children did very nicely on their first spelling test. I was so proud of them that I shared their results with Sr. Theresa. So, next week when you see it in their Communication Envelope you will see her autograph as well.
We are working very hard learning how to give change. The children have been playing customer and cashier. They loved using their play money.
We went to the Lab yesterday for the first time. They got their seats for class and I will change them each time we do a new cell. We established rules just like you have rules for a game. In fact, I used a game board as the springboard for our discussion. Next week, they will be using an orange peel, magnifying glass and other lab tools to conduct 7 trials.
We are in the process of writing our sloppy copy of Flat Stanley's Summer Vacation. We did a webbing/mapping already to help us with our writing. I did a sample to help them with their proofreading skills and had the come up via the whiteboard and computer to make corrections on my sloppy copy. I wanted to stress the importance of having someone else proofread their work. Mrs. O'Hagan will be joining us on Thursday mornings to help us with our writing.
We discovered that Flat Stanley traveled to 20 different states and 4 countries. We hope to make them on a map. He certainly had a blast on his summer vacation.
I know yesterday if your child was the oldest or only many papers came home in their folder about Pizza Day, Black Friday, Swine Flu, and the Baby Diaper Collection. Please be sure to return the Pizza Order Form for your child/ren as soon as possible. I also asked that your return the Coupon Book or money for the Coupon Book and the sign off paper for the SGS Handbook and Technology Policy as soon as possible.
In all of the children's communication envelope, you will have found yellow and/or green paper as well as homework papers I checked for them. I ask that you please sign all papers that are marked in any way by me and return them to me so I am sure you have seen the progress your child is making. Some of those papers I will put into their test folder.
When signing their Homework Book, please check the back of the book to check and see if they have received any + marks and initial at the bottom of the column as well.
Don't forget to send in the Box Tops, Acme receipts and old ink cartridges for school.
Don't forget Monday is NOON DISMISSAL. There will be CARES for those registered.

The children brought home their SERVICE JOURNAL that we started last week. I ask that you sign the bottom of page 8 for your child as it part of their homework.
I want to remind all parents to please SIGN the homework book and check the back inside cover and initial at the bottom of the page if there is a + or a check.
Our Spanish Class has been changed to Thursdays at 8:15 until 8:45 AM.
