Physical Education Update!

Please remember that the winter P.E. uniform is in effect and that includes the Holy Martyrs grey sweatshirt.  Additonal sweatshirts are acceptable when we are outside, however these may not be worn in place of the Holy Martyrs sweatshirt.  We will continue to remain outside as long as the weather allows, so please be sure the children are properly prepared for this and have hats, gloves and coats with them.  Typically we will not be out if the temperatures drop below 40 or if the wind chill brings the temperature down below 40 degrees.

The children in grades 4 - 8 will be receiving a P.E. grade on their report card and these grades range from a 4 down to a 1.  I have discussed with the children from the first day of class to present what is required to maintain a 4 and what will bring that grade down.  I have clearly explained to the children that it is not necessary to be a skilled athlete to earn a 4.  Attitude and effort are two key ingredients. The following are the grading parameters:

4 - Student maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class, shows respect to the teacher and his/her classmates at all times, strives to perform the required stretches correctly each week and is not talkative during the stretch period, and always gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability during the class activity/game.

3 - Student maitains a postive attitude during all activities in class the majority of the time, rarely shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmaates, strives to perform the stretches correctly each week and corrects performance when incorrect and rarely talks to others during the stretch period, and gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability during the class activity/game the majority of the time.

2 - Student maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class some of the time, sometimes shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmates, sometimes strives to perform the stretches correctly and is somewhat aware of correcting perfomance when necessary and frequently talks during stretches, and gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability only some of the time.

1 - Student rarely maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class, frequently shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmates, rarely strives to perform the stretches correctly and is usually talkative during stretches, and rarely gives 100% effort or performs to the best of his or her ability.

As the winter months settle upon us and we move our activities indoors we will be covering some educational aspects of P.E. in a classroom setting as we have in past years and turn part of our focus to fitness and healthy lifestyles.  I will update the notes as these classes near.

If you have any concerns throughout the rest of the school year please feel free to contact me through a call to school which I will return in the evening or via my school email address hmsgym_burns@hotmail.com.

Wishing you a blessed and happy holiday season!

Mrs. Burns
