Physical Education Update!

Welcome back for another wonderful school year here at Holy Martyrs!  For the first few weeks the spring uniform is in effect.  This consists of grey Holy Martyrs tshirts and blue mesh shorts.  Please keep in mind that the mornings can be chilly right now so it might be a good idea to send your children with a sweatshirt or jacket (any sweatshirt is acceptable until winter uniform goes into effect).  If it warms up, I assure you and your children that I will allow them to remove their sweatshirt or jackets. The children are to wear white, black or navy blue socks.  Socks are NOT to have any logo on them (i.e. Nike swoosh, etc.) and are to be visible about the top of the sneaker. I will remind them of proper uniform and what consists of an infraction for the first few weeks.  After that children in grades 5-8 will be given one verbal warning.  A second infraction will result in sitting out for the class.  Your assistance in this will be greatly appreciated.

The children in grades 4 - 8 will be receiving a P.E. grade on their report card and these grades range from a 4 down to a 1.  I will discuss with the children from the first day of class to present what is required to maintain a 4 and what will bring that grade down.  I will clearly explain to the children that it is not necessary to be a skilled athlete to earn a 4.  Attitude and effort are two key ingredients. The following are the grading parameters based on the Archdiocesan PE Rubric:

4 - Student maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class, shows respect to the teacher and his/her classmates at all times, strives to perform the required stretches correctly each week and is not talkative during the stretch period, and always gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability during the class activity/game.

3 - Student maitains a postive attitude during all activities in class the majority of the time, rarely shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmaates, strives to perform the stretches correctly each week and corrects performance when incorrect and rarely talks to others during the stretch period, and gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability during the class activity/game the majority of the time.

2 - Student maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class some of the time, sometimes shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmates, sometimes strives to perform the stretches correctly and is somewhat aware of correcting perfomance when necessary and frequently talks during stretches, and gives 100% effort and performs to the best of his or her ability only some of the time.

1 - Student rarely maintains a positive attitude during all activities in class, frequently shows disrespect to the teacher and his/her classmates, rarely strives to perform the stretches correctly and is usually talkative during stretches, and rarely gives 100% effort or performs to the best of his or her ability.

Please know that if any student continues to have behavior issues or problems in PE class it will be brought to the classroom teacher's attention.  If the matter cannot be resolved at that level, the parents will be contacted. This is rarely the case.

Each class will be participating in the parish mission of "Steps to Bethlehem."  Each week one student will be wearing a pedometer and will measure the number of steps taken by the class as a whole.  We will then transfer that information to a slip of paper which will be turned in to the parish coordinator.  I think the children will be very surprised when they realize how many steps they actually walk/run each class!

As the winter months settle upon us and we move our activities indoors we will be covering some educational aspects of P.E. in a classroom setting as we have in past years and turn part of our focus to fitness and healthy lifestyles.

If you have any concerns throughout the rest of the school year please feel free to contact me through a call to school which I will return in the evening or via my school email address hmsgym_burns@hotmail.com.

Wishing you a wonderful start to the school year and a beautiful autumn season!

Mrs. Burns
