It is hard to believe that October is here. What a great time we are having in our class. We have been working hard and our expectations for behavior have been met. 2-S has earned a pajama party and an extra Friday recess. We had our name announced for perfect behavior for one week of specials. Actually we have earned 25 for the past 10 out of 11 classes!
If only the EAGLES could do so well!
Our reader’s workshop is in full swing. Reading groups have been formed. Groups are meeting two to three times per week. Reading decoding and comprehension strategies, and phonics are part of each lesson. The children are reading independently from our leveled library. They read and write in their reading response journal. I am pleased at how well they are reading quietly and completing their written work in their response journals.
In math, we completed chapter 1. Their work in math is just fantastic! I am amazed at how carefully they are taking their time, and cooperating as they work with a buddy. Continue to review time and money so they retain what we have practiced. New ways to learn addition and subtraction will be explored with fact triangles, frames and arrows, and equivalent names for the number in chapter 2.
The children are working on narrative writing this marking period. Each week we will focus on different
aspects of this type of writing. How to write a captivating beginning, ,adding details to the middle of our story, making the story come to life with lively verbs and juicy adjectives are some of our writing topics. The stories written by the children will be self-selected and true and important to them. I will be asking for parent volunteers when we edit pieces for publishing. Otherwise, our weekly writing will be edited by the children. Each day we will edit our writing. It will become natural to them, just like brushing their teeth!
Our Social Studies activities will focus on our country and its symbols. We will also be discussing the election and learning about the voting process. It should be fun!
The science unit about plants has been filled with interesting activities. We are growing brassica plants.
The children are keeping notebooks and recording notes about their experiments. Today we wrote and completed a word web about seeds on the Kidspiration program on the computer. They completed their webs and everyone saved their work! We will be starting a research project on plants on Monday. The children will be reading, writing, taking notes on post-its, and then making a web on the Kidspiration program.
