June 6 2008

We have had a busy week!!!  We finished up sharing our Flat Stanely adventures.  He had a fun time with our family and friends.  We have also been busy with our end of the year celebration.  We brought tears to Mrs. Gemmato's eyes when she came to watch us practice.

Yikes, only one week to go!!!!  The children are bringing home a very important note in their friday folder--it includes all of the events for the last week of school.

No more homework.  Friday folders can stay home!

Please mark your calendars for the end of the year activities listed below.  A very important date is our End of of the Year Celebration.  A night to honor the K students for all that they have accomplished this year.  Many parents have asked if this night is a requirement..............we would like everyone there--it is sort of like a K graduation without the caps and gowns.  We understand that things come up, but if all possible, we would like to have all of the children there.

We will be celebrating summer birthdays.....calling in the Unbirthday celebration.  Please let us know if you like to contribute a snack or treat if your child has a summer birthday.  We will be having this celebration on Monday, June 9th at 2:15.

Field Day is on Thursday afternoon from 1:30-2:30.  We are the green team.  Please have the kids wear green that day.

Sincerely,
Stacie Husted
Denise Fish

Inventive Spelling--
We encourage the children to use inventive spelling.  The children are to write down the sounds that they hear instead of asking us to spell.  Inventive spelling helps the children apply the sounds that they learn.

Reading--
The children are bringing home reading book bags.  Please read these books with your child several times before you send it back.  The children should be able to "read" the book as well as know what the book was about.  Please celebrate what your child is doing!  Remember memorization is part of the reading process.  The children know that the words say the same thing each time.  They know that we read in top to bottom and left to right progression.  Have your child point out words that he/she can read--especially words from our word lists.

Homework--
Homework will come home at the end of each week.  It is due back the following Thursday.  There will be a writing packet attached the weekly newsletter.  You will find the newsletter in the children's red Friday folder.  The children are also expected to "read" five nights out of the week and record the books they've read in their purple reading logs.  The reading logs are due back on Thursdays with the written homework.  Please return the homework and reading log (in the red folder) on Thursdays.

Book-It--
We will be participating in Pizza Hut's Book-It program.  This program will run from October through March.  The Book-It reading logs will be put in the children's purple reading logs--new form, but same reading homework procedure.  The children's goal is to read five nights out of the week/20 books a month.  If your child reaches the goal, he/she will receive a certificate for a free pan pizza from Pizza Hut at the end of each month.

Letter Box--
On letter box days, the children can bring in one item from home for each of the letters of the week.

Hound Chains--(this program starts on Open House)
The charms the children can earn are:
--a paw print for being a Husted Hound
--a shoe for learning to tie their shoe
--a star for being the hound of the week
--a math star for filling the counting jar
--a helping hand for doing all of the classroom jobs
--an 100 for reaching the 100th day of school
--an apple for learning the September sight vocabulary words
--a pumpkin for learning the October sight vocabulary words
--a turkey for learning the November sight vocabulary words
--a tree for learning the December sight vocabulary words
--a penquin for learning the January sight vocabulary words
--a heart for learning the February sight vocabulay words
--a shamrock for learning the March sight vocabulary words
--a raindrop for learning the April sight vocabulary words
--a thumbs up for learning the May/June sight vocabulary words
--a book for participating in challege reading books
--a star reader star for participating in the A.R. program
(Sight word vocabulary words will be sent home at the beginning of each month.  The challenge reading and A.R. programs start later in the year based on each's child's ability to identify sight vocabulary words)

Hound of the Week--
Each child will have an opportunity to be the "Hound of the Week."  Please check the class calendar to see when it is your child's turn.  You will also get a letter and an information packet when it is your child's turn.  The Hound of the Week gets to share some fun facts with the class including: their favorite snack, favorite book and favorite toy.

Shared Journal Writing--
Each child will have the opportunity to tell be a story teller during journal writing.  The storyteller of the day will tell a story and the rest of the class will "record" the story in their journals.  Please check the class calendar to see when it is your child's turn.

Counting Jar--
Each child will have the opportunity to fill the counting jar.  They will bring home a big jar and be asked to fill it with a specific number of items.  The actual amount of items remains a mystery to the rest of the class.  The children estimate how many items are in the jar and then we count out the items to determine the actual number.

Poem of the Week--
About every other week, your child will bring home a copy of a poem that we read in class.  It is recommended that you store these poems in a three ring binder or folder.  Have your child read the poems to you a few times each week.  Remember to celebrate what your child knows.  Memorization is a part of early reading.  Have your child point out sight vocabulary words and share with you what they notice about the poem (number of words, punctuation, rhyming words, etc.).

Word Lists--
The children will bring home a list of words at the beginning of each month.  These word lists are our sight vocabulary words.  Please review these words with your child several times each week.  The children will be "tested" to see how many words they can read.  The word lists are to be kept in your child's red Friday/Homework folder.
