Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
May 16, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  Classes have been very busy this week.  The students are busily reading The Phantom Tollbooth.  They are writing their responses to the book in their response notebooks.  The higher level thinking questions that the students are creating are marvelous.  Students are writing stories about meeting their favorite book characters.  I would prefer if they would type these stories because they are going to go into their end of the year book.  The students enjoy reading their stories and poems to each other.  I love their amazing creativity.
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Erin Mahoney-05/16/08
This week in language arts, we did a wide variety of activities. For example, on Monday, Mrs. Rogers-Newman explained to us a new story that we will be writing about. The story has to be about the day you met your favorite book character. We will need to think about the setting and adventures that will be happening in our story. Half of the rough draft was due today. So during that class period, we could either read or start working on our story. Also, this was the week when we started to get back into reading and discussing The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. So on Tuesday, we still had the option of reading or working on our story again. On Wednesday, Mrs. Rogers-Newman let us read for a good 20 minutes. We also had an assembly that day. For the assembly, we had a visitor named Rene Bibaud. She is a world champion jump roper. She showed us several routines that she does, and some of her amazing performances. She told us that jump roping is a great way to have fun and stay active. Later in the class, we went to the computer lab. We spent about 35 minutes in the lab to type some of our work for our end of the year books. The end of the year books will have a variation of our work from all throughout the year. On Thursday, we disccused any questions we had about The Phantom Tollbooth so far. After that, we went to the computer lab again for the same reason. Doesn't it sound like we had so much fun this week? Well we sure did. Enjoy the weekend!!!!!

Social Studies by Sam Guise-05/16/08
This week in Social Studies, we were learning about the Chesapeake Bay.  On Monday, we went over our definitions for our vocabulary test on ten words about the Chesapeake Bay, and listened to songs about the Bay.  Including a song called "Chesapeake Born".  After the song, we watch a movie called "Chesapeake Born".  On Tuesday, we reviewed for our test and went back to watching "Chesapeake Born".  On Wednesday, we reviewed for the test and finished Chesapeake Born test.  On Thursday, we learn a lot of facts about the Chesapeake Bay.  The test is Friday so remember to study.  Thank you for taking your time to read Mrs. Rogers-Newman's class' Friday Notes and have a great weekend.

This week in math we got our test back.  Also we finally had math homework.  And we will be having a test of flips and slides.  We have all been having a googleplex of fun.  Well I have anyway.  So please ask your child if he or she has been having fun.  And our homework that is due Monday is to study and make our own study guide.  And that’s all for math this week.

Related Arts by Sydney Hall-05/16/08
This week I am going to tell you about Related Arts.  On Monday, we worked on our art collages in art.  Some people's projects are great, and some are already finished!  Tuesday, we watched High School Musical 2, in music class.  In technology, on Wednesday, we worked on our cover, copyright page, and title for our end of the year books, which Erin will be writing about.  Thursday, our class had the special of wellness.  We kept on talking about drugs and how they effect us if we take them (financial, family, emotion, legal, and social).  I hope you all have a great weekend!! :)

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
May 9, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  This week was Charter School Week.  It was an amazing and wonderful experience.  Our door tied for first place in the door decorating contest!!!!!!!!!!!! I am very proud of my class!!!  Their prize is a pizza party!!  I will let the students tell you all about it!
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Shane Feehrey
On Monday, we worked on our door for the whole time.  Luckily we got most of it done.  On Tuesday, we went on a field trip to the John Dickinson Plantation.  We took a tour of his house, played old time games and made our own signatures with quill pens.  Then we went to the St. Jones Reserve which is where you walk on a marsh.  On Wednesday during Language Arts we went down to the music room to practice our songs for the spring concert.  On Thursday we worked on our I remember when poems for the end of the year books.  These books hold all the writing that we did in fifth grade.  That is what we did in LA for the week.

Social Studies by Paul DiBenedetto
This week in social studies we didn't do much. On Monday we stayed in language arts the whole day to finish making our door for the door making competition. Our door was filled with origami cranes and some flowers made by 2 people. Tuesday we had a field trip, luckily for you some of it was about social studies. We went to the John Dickinson Plantation. We learned that the mansion was burned down and then they rebuilt it. It was fun because we got to go inside the mansion. All the rooms had fire places except for one, the Dickinsons would use that room like a storage room. We also learned that although John Dickinson was a Quaker, he owned slaves! Wednesday was our first time actually having social studies. Mrs. Rogers-Newman had us write down what we thought estuary, water shed, brackish, and point and non-pollution meant. Afterwards we watched a movie on the Chesapeake Bay. Thursday we watched the same movie and tried to finish it. That was our week in social studies. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Math by Jenna Deal
On Monday in math, well we didn't have math because of the pep rally. On Tuesday, we also didn't have math because of our field trip to the St. Jones Reserve and the John Dickinson Plantation. So we didn't have homework on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday we did have math and we did some bookwork from the textbook. The work we did was on Cartesian Coordinates, with four grids. Yesterday, we also did a grid on Half Centimeter Grid Paper. We didn't have homework all week except for Thursday. On Thursday, if you didn't finish, you had to do the grid on the Half Centimeter Grid Paper. So some people didn't have math homework and some did.

Related Arts by Jessica DeFilippis
On Monday we went to Music and we were practicing the concert songs for fifth grade. On Tuesday we went on a field trip so we missed technology. On Wednesday we missed Wellness and had Music to practice for the spring concert. On Thursday it was the Science Fair so we couldn't have gym, so we had it in the classroom and played four corners and seven up!!

School News by Konark Christian

This is a poem that our special guest, Dr. Frank Lyman wrote for the students.  Dr. Lyman is the creator of many learning strategies that the students use such as Think-Pair-Share, the Think Trix Grid, and even graphic organizers!  Dr. Lyman came to visit us on Friday afternoon.  The students had created questions for him about his learning strategies.  They had a marvelous and insightful discussions of learning theory and literature.  It was truly an amazing afternoon.

Language Arts by Billy Swann
The best thing about Mrs. Newman’s language arts class is you do not know what will happen next.  Just like this week.  On Monday we went over our spelling definitions and talked about each one.  On Tuesday we went to the computer lab and typed up any handwritten stories that we had.  On Wednesday we did nothing but made origami paper cranes for our Charter School Week contest.  On Thursday we still made paper cranes but only for a little bit.  Then we went over our MOT stories and played spelling games.

Social Studies by Michaela Murph
In social studies we talked about John Dickinson.  As a class, we put in order information about John from nonspecific to specific.  We talked about where he was born, where he lived, his religion, his jobs, and when he died.  We learned about John Dickinson because we are going to his plantation for a field trip.  We also did Scholastic News and it was due on Tuesday.  The Scholastic News talked about protecting the planet, poetry, and animal rescue.  We had to answer the questions in the Scholastic News.  We also had to fill out a packet for the Scholastic News.  We looked over the questions in the packet with the class.  Social Studies was great this week.

Science by Rebecca Wood
We had an interesting week in science this week! On Monday, we received worksheets that we could complete to get extra credit on our science tests. I am sad to say that not everyone did so well. The packet will give you more than ten points to add to our original grade. We also talked about our science projects that we had to bring in yesterday, which was Thursday. Our projects had to be chosen from a list that had about ten different experiments and research papers about different mixtures and solutions. We had to choose one, bring in a poster, the experiment, or any other needed materials, and present it to the class. On Tuesday, we went over our science test. On the test, we were required to spell certain words (solute, solvent, concentrate, dissolve, etc.) and fill in the blanks with those words. On Wednesday, we did our first experiment in Investigation 4: Fizz Quiz. For this experiment we had three mixtures, made up of two ingredients. Some reacted, some were hot, and some were cold! It was very interesting! We also had to write down all of our observations on a piece of paper. On Thursday, half of the class shared their science projects. Some people talked about what foods citric acid is in, and some told us about rock candy. We also learned that when you add different mixtures (flour, sugar, etc.) to water, it does not always make a solution. Today the other half of the class shared their science projects. Science Rocks!!!

Math by Lucas Walls
This week in math all we did were word problems, word problems, and guess what more word problems. It was review for the unit 9 test we had on Thursday. It covered division review and multiplication. Also division with remainders. We had to write the division answers as mixed numbers. The word problems were practice for division. Also for writing our answers in a complete sentence. That is all I have to report. Have a great weekend!!!

Related Arts by Ryan Zwier
This week in Spanish we had fun.  We had an A day.  That means we had music.  In music we practiced for the Spring Concert.  In technology we typed our Writer’s Notebook summaries.  In wellness we talked about the lungs.  In gym we stated our first game of volleyball.  In Spanish we watched a video about the Galapogas Islands.

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
April 18, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Hi!  The students are doing a marvelous job reading and thinking about not only story elements but also figurative language!  They are enjoying the whimsical nature of their novel The Phantom Tollbooth.  The students will be writing more poetry, creating literary discussion questions, writing response journals, and have many literary discussions about The Phantom Tollbooth.  The students are also writing stories about their fifth grade year at MOT.  The stories are being written both in class and at home.  I can’t wait to read them!  The students will not have class on next Friday due to a teacher in-service.  Their field trip forms for the May 6th trip are due by April 30th.  We will be going to the Dickinson Plantation and the St. Jones Reserve.  We would like to have one chaperone per class.  If you would like to come, please email me.  Thanks!
Happy Friday!!!
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Adaeze Ohanenye
This week in L.A. we continued with the Phantom Tollbooth. We have completed chapter one, two, and three. We took a test on those three chapters on Wednesday. Gratefully, nobody got a grade note. We also started working on our MOT stories this week. The final copy is due May 2. Have a good weekend!

Social Studies by Michael McMenamin
This week during social studies was focusing
on The Bill of Rights which was a document that
said basic rights of  US citizen.  Also many more things that also have
to do with the government. We had to fill out some work sheets
that helped us kids understand what men and women back then were
talking about. Most people finished but if you were goofing of then that
meant you were going to have some homework. If you finished then
you got to play on the computer.
We also had to take a quiz on the scholastic's news, (which is not something
to study for)!!!!!
That is what we did in social studies this week and I hope
you have a nice weekend.

Science by Jamie Sipala
On Monday we had to find out what the words meant in Vocabulary. Tuesday had to go over homework and did a paper that was in our packet We used a mystery material and  tried to figure out which it was out of the list we were given. We observed it for about 2 minutes then wrote down our observations.  We then had to decide on a plan and had to prove which it was. We had to write our plan out. On Wednesday we made a small book which had a drawling of either salt, Epsom salt or the mystery material.  Thursday we talked about chlorine and learned a new word which was concentration. That was it for the week. Thank you! Have a great weekend!

Math by Andrew Reynolds
There has been much learning going on in math this week. We have started working on a new unit. Part of it is review like long division and multiplication. There has been a big variety of what we’ve been doing in math. On our homework this week we have done word problems, division, and multiplication. In each of the word problems we mostly had to use division to get the answer. For each of the division and multiplication problems we had to make an estimate of the answer. During class we went over the answers on the board to make sure everyone understood the homework. On Wednesday the teachers had a meeting so Ms. Low was teaching with the help of Mrs. Foster. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a great time in math this week. Have a great weekend!!!

Related Arts by Hallee McLain
This week in related arts we did different things. On Monday we had Spanish and everybody worked on their project. On Tuesday we had art and all we did was work on our pictures on the poster where we have to cut or rip magazine paper and glue it down. Then on Wednesday the class had music and the people that wanted to be a dance solo person figured out their partner to dance with and they practiced all class period. On Thursday we all had technology and we got on brainpop and watched movies about the Constitution. On the last day of the week we had wellness. That is what we did in related arts this whole week.

School News by Mark Meloni

This week I did two surveys. One was about favorite
subjects. I had 23 responses for this survey. These are the results. Five people or 5/23 people enjoy social studies the most. Two people or 2/25 like L.A. the most.  Three people or 3/25 people like math as their favorite subject. The most enjoyed subject of all was science…14/23 students or more than half of the people I surveyed like science the most! The next survey was about student’s favorite thing to do during indoor recess. Three people like to go to other 5th grade classrooms the most. Two people like to talk the most. One person likes doing nothing inside the most. Seven people enjoy going on the computers during indoor recess. Seven more students
responded “other.” No one responded “board game.” Those were the results of my two surveys.

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
April 11, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  The students are beginning to read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.  It is a wonderful fantasy filled with puns, hyperboles, idioms, similes, and many other types of figurative language.  Mrs. Elston came into class and worked with the students on the first chapter.  They loved it and so did she!  The students will be writing their reactions to the novel in response journals as well as creating higher level thinking questions about their readings.  Their spelling/vocabulary words over the next few weeks will be words from The Phantom Tollbooth.
Have a great weekend!!

This week in language arts we had a lot of FUN!!! ON Monday, we finished the color poems we had been working very hard on. Then, we shared them with the class. In addition, we began writing a new poem. It was about MOT and our experiences and memories that we've had there. Very exciting! On Tuesday, we finished our poems of MOT. Then, because it was the day of Academic Night, we set up. We did everything from setting up books like Homesick, The Phantom Tollbooth, and A Writers Notebook to setting up our writing Binders and displaying all our poems. On Wednesday, we got our assignments. The first one was to begin reading chapter one of The Phantom Tollbooth. The second one was to practice a Tongue Twister to show a form of alliteration. We got our partners and practiced a little in class and then got to share one of the ones on the list Mrs. Rogers-Newman gave us. On Thursday, we shared the Tongue Twisters we had practiced for homework.  It was kind of like American Idol. We also had some time to read The Phantom Tollbooth and write in our mini-journals. I enjoyed week a lot and I hope we have another week like it.
Social Studies by Sam Guise-04/11/08

I enjoyed related arts this week because we had art, music, technology, wellness, and gym. On Monday, we enjoyed a morning of art. Mrs. Dillon would like to purchase an oven-like machine so that next year, we will be able to do pottery, and build various structures with clay. You probably ask why I mention this. Well, since this machine is an expensive item, she has decided to do a fundraiser to raise money. So Mrs. Dillon found this program where you send in a painting or drawing that you made, and you will get free magnets that have your very own art design on it! This is where the art comes in. We spent the class working on drawing and painting our pictures. In order to raise the money, we need your parents to buy different items that have your drawings on it. Some items that you can purchase are clocks, potholders, tote bags, and framed pictures. After all that being said, we had music on Tuesday. Since the book fair was in the music room, we had music in the library. To start the class off, we warmed up our voices and then got straight to work. We practiced singing all 3 songs that we will be singing in the spring concert, which is coming up soon. We also watched some of our classmates audition for a solo in “Jailhouse Rock”. There were quite a few brave people who auditioned. We later found out that Ryan got chosen to sing the solo. We also had technology, which we had on Wednesday. We continued to write on essay on what we did over spring break. We typed it up on Microsoft Word and added pictures and borders. On Thursday, we had wellness. Mrs. Conley brought a rubber example of 5 pounds of fat, and 5 pounds of muscles. She passed it around, and many of us thought that the muscle was heavier, but it wasn’t. She talked to us about how more and more people are becoming obese in the United States. Also, she went over how we should get lots of exercise and eat a balanced diet. On Friday, we finished our fitness test. The only thing that we left to do was do the Pacer test, which is a sequence of laps across the gym. As you can see, we had a great time in related arts this week. Have a great weekend!!!!!

On Monday in Social Studies we started making our southern states map.  We have to color all the states, abbreviate them, find where all the cities are on the paper Mrs. R-N gave us and that’s it.  On Tuesday we continued to work on our southern states map.  If you didn’t finish the map that day you had to do it for homework.  On Wednesday we started this book called Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution.  We read that book for the rest of the period. On Thursday we finished reading the book called Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution.  That is what we did during the week in Social Studies.

Science by Logan Gates-04/04/08
This week in science we are doing this new unit it is called mixture and solutions it is a very fun unit. But it is a very messy unit Mrs. Dipasquale said to us in the beginning of the unit. We use a lot of materials and some of them are. This fake power stuff, salt, and we also use gravel. In the unit so far we are taking mixtures apart and making them separate.

Math by Paul DiBenedetto-04/04/08
This week in math we worked on projects about 1858 and 1997 deaths, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Monday we had to look at the deaths and put them in order youngest to oldest. Plus we had to make up bins to organize the deaths. Tuesday we put the deaths into their bins, tallied up the number of death in each bin, and turned them into fractions and percents. Now that sounds like a lot of hard work, and it was. Wednesday we made graphs. Specifically the graph was made out of the bins and the percent of deaths. Thursday we were still working hard on the math project. But today wasn't as hard because we were just finishing off the final touches, like putting the graphs onto the poster. Sounds like fun, doesn't it. Well anyway have a great week end!!!

Related Arts by Jessica DeFilippis-04/04/08

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Thursday!!!  Your children are awesome!!!!
Have a great holiday week!!

Language Arts by Billy Swann
This week for language arts even though we had four days of school we had a week’s worth of learning.  On Monday, we were discussing about our book Homesick since our DSTP is finished.  Also we are discussing about our Think Trix grid.  On Tuesday we went over our Homesick events assignment.  On Wednesday we used a Think Trix chart to find out what thinking was in our Think Trix questions.  When Spring break is over we will be talking about The Phantom Tollbooth.  On Tuesday we were talking about puns and how they do a play on words.  On Wednesday we were talking about another of our Homesick assignments.

Social Studies by Emily Battles
This week in Social Studies, we watched a biography movie on Helen Keller and reviewed our Scholastic News and took a little quiz.  The quiz was out of fifteen points.  I think if you actually read it and looked back in your magazine, you did a great job.  Most of the time people who do that do an awesome job!  Helen Keller was a blind and deaf person.  She is very famous because she graduated at a school for people who can see and hear.  It was an amazing thing that she did!  I bet she studied so much longer than most people had to.  Compare how long you study to Helen Keller.  One of Helen’s great teachers was Annie Sullivan.  She must have been a great teacher!  Well Social Studies this week was great!!

Science by Lucas Walls
This week in Science we worked in centers with partners doing worksheets on air, what type of instruments are used to measure the weather, planet questions, and animal questions. We also did trivia questions from Brain Quest which was alot of fun. We also played the 24 game which involves math and science since the two go together in many instances.  The object of the 24 game is to make sums of 24. It was a fun week to be had by all.

Math by Tanvi Walia
In Math this week we did a lot of educational and fun
work.  We had a Test about Geometry, Decimals and
Percents. Mrs. Lomas passed out a paper on Monday that
had all the topics for the test. Then Mrs. Lomas talked
about helpful ways to study for a test, so we made a
Study Guide for Geometry. For every subject in
Geometry you either had to define it, draw examples of
it, draw pictures or do all of the above. Then on
Tuesday we made Study Guides for Decimals and percents
then again we could draw, do an example of it, or
draw, or all of the above. So this is what we did in
Math this week, so have a great Spring Break, have fun!

Related Arts by Rebecca Wood
This week was one day shorter than our usual school week; we only had four days of related arts. On Monday, our class had Wellness with Mrs. Conley. Previously, we have watched half of The Miracle Worker. We finished watching this movie in class. The Miracle Worker is a movie based on Helen Keller’s life, as she was growing up. Helen Keller was blind and deaf from an illness she had when she was younger. Annie Sullivan helped teach Helen American Sign Language, and later, how to speak. She was the first blind and/or deaf person to graduate from a college made for people who can see and speak. Helen Keller worked for the rights of blind and/or deaf people. After watching this movie, we talked about how difficult it was for Helen Keller to communicate with people. She was a very determined and a very successful person. On Tuesday morning, we were supposed to have Physical Education. Instead, we had an assembly on reptiles. An enormous snapping turtle was constantly trying to snap at whoever held it. An American alligator was set on the table on the stage. It almost escaped into the crowd, but luckily, it was caught by the tail. Halfway through the show, a baby crocodile that was only about 1 1/2 feet long was brought to the stage. There was a very long anaconda that found its way onto a man’s shoulders. At the end of the performance, a huge snake was taken out of its box. It was named Banana Boy’s Brother, because it was a light yellow. On Wednesday, we had Spanish. We worked on our Mi Casa booklets. They are little books describing our dream home, or our real home. We have to write sentences, in Spanish, about the room and the objects in it. Then we have to draw or cut and paste pictures on the different pages. Today we had Art. Have a splendid Spring Break!
Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.

We only had a four day week.  Teachers have five days of school.  I have some notes on an opinion poll.  The question is what is your favorite break?  One person said winter.  Two said summer.  All of the above 15 people said.  Zero for none of the above.  I know that I did not collect all of the information.  Have a good spring break.

Thanks for reading!!
Have a great spring break!!!

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
March 14, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  Well the DSTP is concluded and all I can say is that your children did a fantastic job.  They worked for hours every single day reading, writing, completing mathematics problems and of course, every moment was filled with excellence in thinking.  When they finished testing in the morning, they relaxed by reading wonderful books.  Hundreds of pages were read for Book-It in these past two weeks.  In fact, if students read a mere 160 pages, they will qualify to receive two tickets to the Blue Rocks.  I think that everyone will make that goal!!  Spring break is almost here and there will be a well deserved rest for all!!!  Spring break for students will begin after school on Thursday, March 20th.  The teachers will be in school on Friday, March 21st, if you need to contact us for a conference.  If you would like a conference with me on that day, just drop me an email as soon as possible.  If you would like to speak with another teacher, send them an email to set up the conference.
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Jamie Sipala
Monday everyone continued the DSTP, we worked on reading sessions 4 and 5.  It took people mostly about 2 hours after we read. On Tuesday it was DSTP reading again session
6-7 the class finished in about 2 hours. Session 6 was pages 46-60 and session 7 was pages 61-75. After that we read. On Wednesday, we went over stand alone and text based writing rubrics, then we talked about how they are similar and different.
Thursday we took the DSTP session 8 of writing. The approximate time was 1 and 1/2 hours to finish. This was shorter than the previous days.
I will be happy when we have finished the testing.

Social Studies by Michael McMenamin
During Social Studies this week was very different because
the DSTP messed up the mornings for almost every day except for Wednesday.
However on Wednesday we did meet as a class.
What we did was, first we had to finish our scholastics news.
Then we had to find out these every cool and interesting
questions about the United States of America.
That is all I have to say
And
I hope you have a nice weekend.

We only had math class one day this week because of the DSTP.  In math class we worked on word problems.  We did them to exercise our brains.  We also looked over work that has to do with decimals and fractions.  We are going to have a math test on decimals, fractions, and percents.  In the up and coming week we will have math class every day.  Next week we can practice decimals, fractions, and percents.  Then we will be ready for the test.

Happy DSTP week everyone!  Even though we had DSTP we still had related arts.  On Monday, we played basketball in Gym.  On Tuesday, we watched a movie about Helen Keller in Wellness.  We had no Spanish on Wednesday.  On Thursday, we had Music.  We practiced for our spring concert and played rhythm bingo.  Have a good weekend.

This week we had D.S.T.P. testing on Monday through Friday (not including Wednesday.)
That meant we missed social studies, math, and science for
four days. On Monday I decided to do a survey. The topic
was what people like to do during recess. The survey was
completed on Wednesday with twenty-five people sharing
what they like to do at recess. Here are the results: Four
percent enjoy spending their recess on the swings. Also,
four percent did nothing during their recess. During
recess, twelve percent or 3/25 enjoyed playing some kind of
tag. Twenty percent or 5/25 (1/5) prefer to talk during
recess. Twenty-four percent or 6/25 people responded
“other.” The most commonly picked option was football with
thirty-six percent or 9/25 people! Thursday was our 2nd to
last day for D.S.T.P. testing. Friday is our last day for
D.S.T.P. testing. That is what happened over the week.
Thank you for reading my survey!

Thanks for reading!!
Have a great weekend!!!

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
March 7, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  The students have been taking the mathematics DSTP this week.  They did an awesome job!!!  The reading DSTP will be on Monday and Tuesday (March 10 & 11) and the writing DSTP will be given on Thursday and Friday (March 13 & 14).  When they finish testing, the students have been reading wonderful books.  Reading can be very relaxing and after all the hard work.  I know that next week will be very productive as well.
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Sydney Hall
On Monday, we went over our Prep DSTP answers.  (We looked at the essays people wrote about the story they were given.) Tuesday, we handed the answered essays that we kids graded, but that was not the real grade that was given to them.  Now it is Wednesday's turn, Mrs. Rogers- Newman's class read our books. Thursday, we watched “The Secret Garden" until the end of the day. The last day of the week is finally here!!  In L.A., on Friday, we watched”The Secret Garden". It was a great movie!
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND <:-))    - Sydney P. Hall

This week in Social Studies we watched an educational video about slavery.  How the slaves were treated badly and how they were never aloud to learn reading or writing.  Plus if they did learn to read they would be punished.  Other than that we had the DSTP and I’m sure everyone did great!  Don’t forget next week we have reading for the DSTP.  So everyone relax and stay confident. Have a great weekend!

Science by Laura Harris
In science this week we did not do much because of the DSTPs.  We had our math DSTPs.  Please expect more DSTPs next week.  We will still have a little science.  Other than that we had to take a test to see if we know a few words and to see if we could get a toy car to move with a rubber band.

Math by Hallee McLain
This week in math we didn't really do anything. All we did was go over different things that might be on the DSTP. The DSTP was on math. Session one and session two we did on Wednesday and on Thursday we all did session three.

This week in related arts, we had boat loads of fun! We had Spanish, art, and music. Our class started the week off with Spanish. On Monday, in Spanish, we started our unit on objects around the house. We filled out a packet where we had to write the English word when the Spanish word was given. I don't know about you, but I learned a lot. On Tuesday, art is what we had for related arts. We continued redesigning a famous painting, "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. Using paint and magazines, we cut out pictures that would fit the painting. On Wednesday, we thankfully had music. We started right away to rehearse our songs for the spring concert. Actually, this was our first time getting to know the words of the songs. We practiced singing "Blue Suede Shoes", "Jailhouse Rock", and "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay". On Thursday we would have had technology, but we had DSTP testing that day. When we have DSTP, we will have related arts every other day. We had a great time in related arts this week!!!!!!

School News by Bria Manlove
This week, we had the math part of the DSTP. Next week, we are having DSTP reading.   I took one poll this week for DSTP. It turned out that 24% of the fifth grade liked the reading part of the DSTP best out of all. 76% of the fifth grade liked math the best out of all. No one liked the writing section best. At recess, the majority of the fifth grade students played basketball or football. Running Club is starting up soon so don't forget to fill out those permission slips and return them by March 17th. This year MOT is a part of the Rocky Reading Challenge. Fifth Grade students are asked to read 160 pages by April 1st. That is all the latest scoop happening in Mrs. Newman's fifth grade class.

Thanks for reading!!

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Monday!!!  I was very ill with the flu last week, so I spent a number of days recuperating.  The students did a fabulous job with the substitutes though.  This week the students will be taking the DSTP for mathematics on Wednesday and Thursday.  Students will need to get a good night’s rest and have a good breakfast.  Testing will begin promptly at 8:45am.  I know that they are going to do a fantastic job!!!!!!!!!!

This week in language arts we mostly went over what was going to be on the DSTP, and we wrote poems. On Monday we went over the DSTP. We read responses to a worksheet about the 18th century. We did the same thing on Tuesday but we had Mrs. Soucy instead. Wednesday we made poems, they could be about anything. Our substitute that day was Mrs. Wick. Rogers-Newman was back. We talked about the DSTP and our poems. Friday we had Mrs. Wick again and we read our poems. When every one read we played some games!!! Have a great day.

This week in science class, we have been working with these cars.  That we built out of K-nex.  It was a lot of fun to see how to build a car and we also learned a lot of new words while having fun.  Mrs. D is the best teacher ever.  Science is a lot of fun this year because we get to have fun playing with things and learning at the same time.  At first we had to build a car from a design.  But after we built cars from the design from the design we got to change the car by adding pieces to the car to make it better.

Math by Jessica DeFilippis
This week in math we have been learning a new unit. We already took our pretest to see what we know. Monday we made something called centawheels. We cut a line and put them together. Also, we did fractions with them. On Tuesday we model and order decimals. On Wednesday we counted and compared decimals. Thursday we went over Wednesdays homework and also Thursday nights homework. We also went over rounding decimals. On Friday we did some book work about rounding decimals.

Hello everyone, I am Rebecca Wood here and I am prepared to tell you about related arts this week. We had off from school on Monday because it was Presidents’ Day. When we came back, Mrs. Conley woke us up with Wellness. In Wellness, we talked about how it isn’t always easy to come up with a group decision. Mrs. Conley passed around a Tupperware of sweethearts and everyone had to guess how many were in it. Then we had to come up with one guess with our whole table group members. Then we talked about how it would be very hard to come up with one guess for the whole class. On Wednesday, we had physical education with Mr. C. We played basketball and Michaela, Lucas, Ryan, and Rebecca were team captains for basketball. Everyone played a great game even though not everybody can win. The important thing is that everyone had fun playing! Yesterday, we were supposed to have Spanish. Instead, we went to the gymnasium for MOT Idol. MOT Idol is the performance that the seventh and eighth grade choir did. They presented it to the school and last night at 6:30 pm. I hope that everyone has a fantastic weekend, and remember, wear your pajamas inside-out so it will snow!

In Social Studies we are finishing learning about the New England states. We got a Scholastic News and had a packet to fill out for it. In it we learned gorillas are critically endangered, because of a disease called Ebola. Also we are currently experiencing a much warmer winter than usual. A little bit later in the week we read and talked about a gorilla named Koko. She knows American Sign Language and is very smart. On Wednesday we had our test on the New England states. When we were finished our test we had a small quiz on our Scholastic News. Happy Valentine’s Day and have a great four day weekend!

This was a very short week but we still had alot of fun things we did. In Science we are working on motion and design. Monday we got back our test. Mrs DiPasquale showed us how to find our percent with a calculator. We also went over our answers. On Tuesday we got ready to make our cars out of K'nex. Also we got to be engineers and look at the model of our chairs. We had to think how did the people make it and what did they use. On Wednesday we mad our cars, and presented it to the class we could see if it went 100 cm or if it didn’t. Our goal was to get it 100 cm across the room. Some made it and some didn’t. That is all we did the past few days. Have a great weekend and Happy Valentines Day!!!

On Monday, we went over our definitions we found of our vocabulary list with our table group. On Tuesday we studied the definitions as a class. Then, we talked about what really happened in Homesick, the part people were confused about. When we were finished, we talked about the Think Trix symbols and how everything connects. It involved talking about idea to example and example to idea. Did you know that if there is a person you are talking about, they are the example and if you are talking about character traits, they count as the ideas? On Wednesday, we worked on the Valentine’s Day Games we are creating to play on Valentine’s Day. Also, we got the privilege to read for 15 to 30 minutes. While all this was happening, we had Mrs. Ulbrich, Luke’s mom, substituting. On Thursday, we took a test on chapters 1-3 of Homesick. When we finished, we worked on Think Trix chapter four. Also, we read for a little while. Finally, we played spelling games by Michaela, Adaeze, Michael, Mark, and Jamie. This week was AWESOME!!!!!!!

Social Studies by Derek Lambert
Hello students and parents! This week in social studies we had a blast. We learned about the Mid Atlantic and the New England states. We learned about how great they are and there capitals, cities, and landforms. We also are watching a educational video that shows us a sky view of the adventurous states. So I am proud to say this week in SS we had fun and we also learned. Have a great weekend everyone!

In math we had a test.  Our unit pretest and our new unit test.  We will start our new unit on Thursday.  Our new unit is on rays and lines.  A ray is a line that starts at one point and goes one way.  A line is something that starts at one point but goes two different ways.  That’s all we learned this week.  Have a fun weekend.

This week in related arts, we had art, music, technology, and wellness. In art, we continued working on our bird collages. In the whole class, we are making a total of 3 collages. We are doing rather well on them, and should finish shortly. In music, we started something new- stations. We had 8 stations, with 3-4 people at each station. The point of this was to work at our own pace. Some of the stations were listening to music, copying a written song full of notes onto a staff paper, a composer worksheet, and a quiz on rhythm. In technology, which we had on Wednesday, we took an online tutorial that told us about Microsoft word. On Thursday, we had wellness. We continued talking about ways to communicate. One way to communicate is through sign language. We spent most of the class going through the sign language alphabet, phrases, and words. Hopefully, we all had a blast in related arts this week!

The popular sport this week was soccer. Every day after recess I found out who won each game. It was awesome because every player was great. It turns out that 5th grade won most of the week. On Monday 5th grade won, Tuesday 6th graders were almost the only ones playing because 5th grade was playing football. They shoot, they score, and yet again 5th grade won the game. There is one thing that happened on Thursday and that is that 6th grade was not aloud on the field when 5ht grade was on it. Also football was a popular sport this week. On Monday barely anyone played football, but on Tuesday there were three games going on all at once. Mainly 5th graders played because there were two games with many 5th graders. One game of football was bunch of 6th graders. On Wednesday there were only two games because one game was a small group of 6th graders and a small group of 5th grade. Basketball wasn't really a sport this week because everyone played soccer and football, but on Wednesday Marti, Sydney, Tanvi, and Jenna played basketball and Marti won the game along with Sydney. Marti and Sydney had 15 points and Tanvi and Jenna had 5 points, Tanvi and Sydney had won the game.

On Monday, we had Mary Qin Hassig, Mrs. Hassig’s daughter, came in and shared about Chinese New Year. We talked about how the Chinese do not keep track of the specific year, they base the year on a twelve-year cycle. Each of the twelve animals represents a different year. There is the dog, ox, pig, rat, snake, and seven others. The children get Lai see, which is money in little red envelopes, every year. We also read all of our spelling definitions to make sure our definitions went with the way the word was used in the book. Tuesday morning, we did a worksheet on Common and Proper nouns. Manitoba is a proper noun, can you figure what the Common noun is. We also finished sharing our “What makes a great book great” think links. On Wednesday morning, we did a Singular and Plural nouns worksheet. After that, we had about fifteen minutes to organize our binders and read a great book. Then we did a worksheet on the thinking symbols (recall, similarities, differences, idea to example, example to idea, and cause and effect). There were questions about chapter three of Homesick, and we had to identify the thinking done to create the question. On Thursday, we did another worksheet on possessive nouns. We talked about our homework and how some people did extra work. For example, Jessica DeFilippis got pictures off the internet, and placed them on a nice poster board. Everybody had a few minutes to read or do Type to Learn on the computer. Four people hosted spelling games this week. We have some challenging words and the spelling we had today was not something simple. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and have a lot of enjoyment!

This week in Social Studies we went over a little of are scholastic news each day.  There was a play about Sybil Ludington.  Each person in the class was assigned a character to read there lines.  There was a debate of the week which was to ban bottle water in class.  I personally think that students should be aloud to have bottle water in class.  What if you learning about something very important and you were very thirsty?  You could get a drink from a water bottle and not miss a thing. Also there was a sticky situation. The problem was Basketball and Soccer tryouts where coming up and Brian only has time to tryout for one sport.  Brain likes Soccer, but his dad would prefer for Brain to follow his footsteps and play Basketball.  Brain doesn’t want to upset his father.  What should he do?  I think that Brain should do what he wants.  It’s his life and he can do what he wants to do.  I’m sure that his dad will understand.  We had a quiz about the scholastic news issue.  Also we started our Northeast region map.  An example of a few states is Maine, New York, and New Jersey.  Thank you for taking your time to read and have a good weekend.

This week in science we were talking about science experiments and the science fair. We did a few science experiments in class this week. Our homework for that week was to do an experiment at your house. And after you did your experiment you had to write a paragraph about what you did in the experiment that you did. And the science fair is organized by Mrs. Angelus. She is an awesome teacher and a great scientist. Just like Mrs. DiPasquale!!!!!

Upcoming events on Friday, will be any pants and jersey day. Did you know cheerleading is on Thursday. GO MUSTANGS!! Ms. Gemmato gave the 5th and 6th graders a surprise. Happy Friday!!!
This week the students have been writing paragraphs and reading the book Homesick by Jean Fritz.  We are discussing the concept of metacognition which means to learn about learning and to think about thinking.  The students use symbols to help them identify their thinking when we are having group discussions about literature.  The students are going to learn how to create their own questions about stories.  It will lead to greater understanding and deeper thinking about literature.  Monday is the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration. There will be no school because it is a Federal holiday.

In Science we have been very busy.  Early in the week we watched a movie about ideas for science experiments. This was to help prepare for the upcoming Science Fair, which is optional.  Then we started a unit on systems in the body.  Some that we learned about are the nervous system, digestive system, and the circulatory system.  We found out parts of each of these and what they do in our bodies.  To help review the body systems, we had an assignment called, “Science Centers.”  This included puzzles, desk exercises, games and other activities.  It has been a blast learning about Science this week!

Math by Michaela Murph
In math we are having a test on Wednesday, January 23, 2008.  We have been working on area.  We dropped one, two, and four drops of water on a paper towel.  We have been making graphs related to the area of the drops. We had homework on our graphs on January 16, 2008.  We took a pretest on what we are going to be learning on January 17, 2008.  We have been learning how to find the area of a circle.  We are also doing this thing called snappy facts.  This is where we know our multiplication facts in the snap of a finger.  So far, math is going very smoothly.

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
January 11, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Welcome back from winter holidays.  It seems like everyone had a wonderful rest.  In language arts we are working with reading comprehension by identifying main ideas and sub ideas.  Students are writing paragraphs.  Students are also beginning to read the novel Homesick by Jean Fritz.  It is nearly the middle of the year and we are beginning to run out of some room supplies.  It would be wonderful if some of the students could bring in some boxes of tissues for those mid-winter sniffles.  Thanks!  A special thanks goes out to Jessica DeFlippis who has graciously been supplying us with tissues these past few weeks.  Thanks, Jessica for your thoughtfulness!

In science this week, we have been learning about the human body.  Last week we watched the movie, Inside Ralphy.  It was about exploring the inside of the human body and how white blood cells destroy the enemy inside us.  Also we learned about how our medicine helps our white blood cells.  After we watched the movie, we were given two sheets of paper with six gingerbread men on them.  We had to use different types of books to find out how to draw the different organs and nerves inside the gingerbread men.  If you didn’t finish them, you have to do them for homework due on Monday.  Have fun learning about our insides.

Math by Hallee McLain
This week in math we took a test over again because some of us didn’t
do too well on it.  Also we read some things in our math book.  On Wednesday, we discussed some math definitions.  Then we answered some questions in our math textbook.  On Thursday, we did the activity on what we read in the book.  The activity was one about how big 1 drop, 2 drops, and 4 drops of water were on a piece of a paper towel.  There were three trials.  On Friday, we will find the average for each trial.  I hope that all of you have a wonderful weekend and I will see all of you on Monday.

This week, we had Spanish, art, music, and technology. In Spanish, Mrs.Herterich displayed pictures on the overhead. We had to write 5 sentences in Spanish that described the picture. Then we shared our sentences picture by picture. Our Spanish homework is to finish coloring the astronaut of ourselves. We had art on Tuesday. We are starting to work on making 3 big collages of birds. Everyone got a small square, which was a small section of the big picture. This is called proportional drawing. We were given a blank piece of paper, but had a larger duplicate of the colored picture. We had to skim through magazines to find the color to match that part of the square. On Wednesday, we had music. We watched some of the other grades, including ourselves; perform at the Winter Concert on DVD. In technology on Thursday, we went on a website called nimblefingers.com. This is a website to teach you about typing. We tried a free trial to see if we liked it or not. We were given an evaluation paper, which we had to write what we liked and didn't like about the program. This was our week in related arts.

On Wednesday we filled in worksheets on grains with the substitute Mrs. Ulbrich. On Thursday we got our tests back on cells. We were also taught how to grade them. Then we watched Super Size Me. On Friday all we did was watch Super Size Me. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Math by Jessica DeFilippis
This week in math we have been in the beginning of unit four. We were trying to get to unit 7 but it didn't happen. It didn't happen because with Mrs. Lomas, she has always been checking to make sure we are caught up. Also, she makes sure that no one is behind. She goes over it if someone does not understand. On Monday Mrs. Lomas was making sure everyone was finished the 1st and 2nd part of the test. It was basically a review of the 3rd unit. The 4th unit is kind of all together with what we have been doing, except a couple of new things. On Tuesday, we started reviewing division. If you don't know how to do long division then whey don't you do the forgiving method? It is really estimating but at the same time you will get the right answer. If you get a remainder then you put it like a fraction. On Wednesday, since we were fine with the way it works she made us do problems practicing them. One of them was four divided by eight hundred fifty six. Then when everyone was finished we went over
it on the board we messed up. After that we challenged ourselves to a problem that is thirteen divided by eight thousand four hundred ninety seven then we got it right. On Thursday, we like to mix up things by doing it by ourselves and together and doing it as a group which is word problems. Mrs. Lomas said that on Friday we would be doing something fun just because it is our last day until New Years!!!!
Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday Notes:
December 14, 2007

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!.  This week the students worked with story elements.  They learned all about themes in stories.  We saw the movie, Miracle on 34th Street.  We went on a field trip to the Newcastle Court House to experience the courtroom scene.  It was a wonderful field trip.  The students sat in a real courtroom to listen to the court case.  It was a nice combination of language arts and social studies.  In social studies the students are beginning a unit on economics using a curriculum entitle, “Econ and Me”.  Students will be involved in experiences involving basic concepts of economics such as:  scarcity, economic problems, goods, services, and opportunity cost.
Have a great weekend!!

Language Arts by Rebecca Wood
On Monday, we read over our spelling definitions with a partner.  We were required to look up eight words for our spelling homework. We also read some quotes from our fiction to-save section of our binder. Some quotes were:
-        Listening is the beginning of understanding.
-        Music is love in search of a word.
-        Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.
Mrs. Rogers-Newman went over a story element packet that we wee to complete while we watched some of Miracle on 34th Street. The packet contained questions about protagonists, antagonists, the setting, the rising action, the rising action, and the falling action. Tuesday morning, we wrote half of our spelling words in cursive. We also watched up to the court room scene from Miracle on 34th Street. The whole class discussed our answers to the questions on our story elements packet. On Wednesday the whole class learned where the letters are on the keyboard of a computer. Some sentences people used were:
QWERT- Quick Willy eats rat tails.
YUIOP- Your umbrella isn’t opened properly.
ASDFG- A silly dog finds gold.
HJKL- Happy jaguars kiss leopards.
ZXCVB- Zany x-rays come-out very blurry.
NM- No More!
We also talked about how to use a dictionary correctly.
On Thursday, we had a field trip to the New Castle County court house, to see the court room scene of Miracle on 34th Street. When we got back to school, everybody had thirty seconds to label all of the letters they could, on a blank page with a keyboard. Everyone finished watching the movie and completed the story elements packet we were given. At the end of the day, we played our spelling games.
Have a SPECTACULAR weekend!!!

This week in Social Studies we finished studying our unit on Maps.  We studied regional maps, city maps, and postal abbreviations for the states.  We started our new unit on Economics.  We learned that Economics is the study of Resources and Money.  We also watched a video that showed us scarcity and economic problems.  The video also talked about limited resources such as wood, trees and space in somebody's back yard. For our homework we will be going on a "camping trip" that we will need to pack 10 things into two 5 gallon pickle buckets which is an example of scarcity of space.

Science by Emily Battles
In Science we are learning about our body and what to eat and what not to eat. We have talked about calories, carbs, saturated fat, and so much more. We also learned that we need to watch what we eat because you can harm your body and you only get one of them. It is not like you could go to the store and buy a body like you can get an orange. We also started watching Super Size Me. Science was very fun this week.

Math by Jenna Deal
This week in math, we had two tests separated into two parts.  Part one was on Wednesday and part two was today.  The only homework we had this week was to study for these two tests.  Part one was on changing improper fractions into mixed numbers, changing mixed numbers into improper fractions, and finding equivalent fractions.  Also, ordering fractions and describing the whole or related part that was given.  On this part of the test, we had used some fraction pieces for some questions.  Today, part two of the test was on ratios and interpreting a line graph.  Once we were finished, we could read a book or do flashcards.  Hopefully, everyone studied and did well on the test.

This week in Social Studies we had a very spectacular week! This week Mrs. Rogers Newman let us take a little break off homework, but however we needed to study for an important test on Thursday, December 6th. The test is a Mid Atlantic Map Test. Students will need to locate all the information on the map. Students must remember the spelling of the states, the capitals, and abbreviations.
Capitalization will also count. Since Mrs. Rogers Newman wants us to do well students will be able to use a word bank for the geographical information. They must spell and capitalize the items correctly from the word bank. Students must be able to locate all of these geographical places as well. Be careful to study and proofread all of your test items!

In L.A. we usually finish up morning work
first. Most of the time we go over the morning work. After
that, we talk about rising and falling action, plots, and
climax. We watched and went over “The Wizard of Oz” over
the week too. We filled out a packet on it after we
reviewed it. That was we did in L.A. over the week.

Math by Erin Mahoney
This week in math, we are mainly working with best-fit lines and something called distance vs. time. We started the beginning of the week by being assigned a Learning Target Practice on line graphs. Also, we worked on a packet called Using Best-Fit Lines, which involved making a best fit line, and being able to answer questions based on the line. Towards the end of the week, we started a new lab called Distance vs. Time. In this lab, we had three trials which included three timers. The three people holding the stop watch were each assigned a line at 6 yards, 9 yards, and 12 yards. As the "walker" walks by them, they should have stopped the stop watch. This told us about how long it would take to walk 6 yards, 9 yards, and 12 yards. Once we gathered all this information, we put it onto a data table. The very last thing we did in math was getting several choices of word problems, and trying to answer them as a group.

On Monday, we received our completed ideas from chapter two all the way to the review. One plan for next week is to make a board game. This was a short week because we are off on Friday. Have a good weekend!!!

In math we are learning about base 10. We are also learning a couple of ways to do it.  Now we are learning about doing base 10 shorthand for multiplication.  We had some homework for that.

As you probably already know, we are working on our unit called ecosystems. With a partner, we were asked to make a poster of biotic and abiotic connections. Then we were supposed to write 12 connections down from our poster. If you don't know what the words biotic and abiotic mean, ask your child. He/she should say that biotic means living and abiotic means nonliving. This is exactly what we have been learning about. We are also keeping track of our terrrarium and aquarium. We have recently connected these two things together. The reason we did this is so that the water from the terrarium will drain out to the aquarium.

In related arts this week, we had wellness, PE, Spanish, and art.  In wellness, we talked about different things.  In PE the whole class played ultimate frisby.  In Spanish we had a quiz, but it did not take very long for all of us.  Also last but not least, in art some of us are going to be working on our face paintings. What we had to do was trace our face onto nine squares and some of us are going over it with a sharpie and some of us may start coloring or painting it.

Thanks for reading!!  Have a great weekend!!!

Mrs. Rogers-Newman’s Class Friday/Monday Notes:
October 5, 2007

A Note from Mrs. Rogers-Newman:
Happy Friday!!!  I am disappointed in that only two people out of six submitted news reports for our Friday Notes.  This is a very important writing assignment which is completed only once every four weeks.  I am proud of Sam and Laura for completing their work in a timely manner.  They did a great job on their writing!  Progress reports will be coming out on Monday, October 8th. The students will be off from school on Friday, October 12th due to a teacher professional day.

School News by Samuel Guise
This week at recess the popular sport was soccer.  It changed from last week, which was football.  Wonder what it will be next week?  Now here are some jokes.

Why was the computer cold?

Why did the male phone call the female phone?

What do you call someone who just sits around blowing into a shell?

What game do sponges play at their birthday party?

Answers:
It forgot to close its windows
To give a ring
A conch potato
Musical squares

Thank you for reading and have a great weekend. :)

In math, we have been using pack, flat, skinny, and bit.  We have been learning how to add and subtract by using pack, flat, skinny, and bit.  We all have been having plenty of fun.  And remind your kids to congratulate Mrs. Lomas when she gets back from getting married and her honeymoon.
