Reading/ Language Arts Weekly Schedule: 10/13 - 10/17
This week we are beginning the Lois Lowry novel Number the Stars.
Students will be expected to complete a literature circle packet page following each chapter. This week we will read and discuss chapters 1-3.
Students will also complete “center activities” independently. Each student will be provided with a checklist of the centers they need to have completed by Friday.
This week students will be doing the following centers in relation to the novel:
There are no assessments (spelling or reading) this week. There are also no spelling terms or homework.
Mathematics - 10/13 - 10/17
Homework: Discovery Assignment Book - softback book(pages 23 and 25) - Due 10/15
Mon./ Tues. - Practice multiplying and dividing with 5's and 10's. Students will use triangle flash cards to practice their 5 and 10 digit facts. Students will learn the four components of a fact family and the inverse operations involved in multiplying and dividing. Students will review the terms: product, factors, divisior, dividend, and quotient. They will also practice multiplying by 0 and 1 and explain the rules for doing so.
Wed./ Thurs./ Fri. - Students will work with base-ten pieces to gain a better undertanding of place value. Students will use bits, skinnies, flats, and packs to represent ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands respectively. Students will practice using the "fewest pieces rule" to leave one-digit remaining in each of the four place value columns as they trade bits for skinnies, skinnies for flats, etc. This is a hands-on/ visual approach to teaching and udnerstanding place value.
