This week our story is about Louis Braille. Louis Braille is the boy who invented books for the blind. The Braille system is a series of raised dots that people without sight use today to communicate. Before Braille print, people without sight could only read by running their fingers over text made up of raised letters. This was inefficient because the letters were too hard to read and expensive to print. Louis Braille helped make life better for people without sight by creating an alphabet that enabled them to read quickly.

Sarah Plain and Tall is set during the frontier days in the United Sates, when the western region of the country was only sparsely populated. The story is about a lonely frontier father whose wife dies several years before the story begins. Now he would like to fine a new wife and mother for his children. The family must take risks in giving up past memories to make room for new ones, and Sarah must risk leaving a home she loves to try and make a new life.
