Period 2 - English III
Sept 21
Pre-Class    Write: What are Mrs. Bowe’s expectations for me and for my class? How can I fulfill them best? Explain.
Activity    We discussed the pre-class warm-up. We worked on defining the 10 words to own from “Olaudah Equiano” and finding their root words (see classroom words posted).

Activity    Silently read “Olaudah Equiano” – pages 57-65. Complete the graphic organizer of his experiences in West Africa and on the Middle Passage. Complete the point of view handout. Complete the Making Meanings questions on page 66.

Sept 17
Pre-Class    Write: How does subjective information sneak into objective histories? Think about who writes the histories.
Activity    We discussed the pre-class warm-up. We worked on the archaisms handout –please complete. We began reading the background of Olaudah Equiano in our text (page 56) and began reading his narrative. We completed the “before you read” columns on the note handout.

Pre-Class    Take out your three-ring binder – I am checking notebooks today.
Activity    We reviewed the progress we have made on the student-learning map for our Beginnings unit. We worked on identifying examples in “Of Plymouth Plantation” that are subjective and objective – see handout.

Pre-Class    On a separate piece of paper, write the following phrases in normal syntax:“In critic’s hands, beware thou dost not come”“In secret place where once I stood”“For from one father are we not”
Activity    We reviewed the pre-class. We discussed the poem and the homework questions. We took a short reading quiz, using open note on the poem.

Pre-Class    Get out your inversion handout and complete the remaining inverted lines.
Activity    We reviewed the inversion handout. We read the poem “Here Are Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House” and discussed what was going on. Ticket out – Do you agree with the poet that religion does give comfort in a situation like this? Explain.
Submitted    Pre-class spiral bound notebooks (everyone must have turned it in).  Ticket out.
Homework    Complete noun handout. Complete the five questions on the poem handout (they are in the margins)

Pre-Class    Write: What do the Puritans seem to value? How are these comparable to your values? Explain.
Activity    We reviewed the Puritans values, concerns, and comforts based on “Of Plymouth Plantation” – completed the matrix with both Native American and Plymouth stories on it. We took a quiz on “Of Plymouth Plantation”
Submitted    Quiz on “Of Plymouth Plantation” and the chronology chart for “Of Plymouth Plantation.”
Homework    Pre-class notebooks will be collected tomorrow.

Sept. 8th, 2009
Pre-Class    Write down possible meanings for the following words: transcribe, transcend, translate, transgress, imbibe, immalleable, immaterial, export, expatriate, exclusion.
Activity    We reviewed the prefixes: trans, im, and ex and the pre-class terms. We finished reading “Of Plymouth Plantation” – get photocopy of the final page and completing the chronology chart. – PICTURE DAY.

Pre-Class    Write: What are the differences between the Puritan story and the Native American stories?
Activity    We discussed the pre-class write. We previewed the concept of “pre-destination” – a Puritan belief. We continued reading “Of Plymouth Plantation” and writing down the events which Bradford gives spiritual significance to.
Submitted    Partner re-write of the sentence in the text.
Homework    Signed course description by Tuesday, Sept. 8. Sept 8 is picture day. Quiz on “Of Plymouth Plantation” on Wednesday.

Pre-Class    Pick up textbook and get out your notes from yesterday.
Activity    We placed the vocabulary terms on our Puritan background notes where we thought the twelve words should go. We reviewed how to complete the graphic organizer for “Of Plymouth Plantation.” We began reading “Of Plymouth Plantation” and filled in two of the boxes on the graphic organizer.

Activity    We completed a “gallery walk” around the room, taking notes on the information on the Puritan’s life. This is background information for our reading “Of Plymouth Plantation” tomorrow.

Pre-Class    Pick the Ellison quotation handout and write a well-organized response.
Activity    We reviewed the Pre-class/warm-up format and stapled into our spiral bound notebooks. We got into groups and put terms into categories and then explained the categories – this is a preview on the Puritans.

Homework    Some need to finish their response to the Ellison quotation.

Activity    We created the graphic retelling of “The Sky Tree” – with full color. We worked on the NEW matrix which will compare “The Sky Tree” with two other NEW stories from the text. – get this handout!
