Emergency Note about Charter Challenge: I just found out that I will not be able to be at the Charter Challenge on January 17, 2009. My grandson's Christening has been scheduled for that day (at 11:00 AM in northern New Jersey). I will continue to prepare the students for the Charter Challenge, but I cannot possibly be there that day. I am counting on parents to be with their children. If that is not possible, we will have to withdraw from the competition. Please let me know if you will be able to stay with your child all day, or if you will let another parent be responsible for your child.
I apologize for this situation. I am sure that you will understand. I have waited countless years for a grandchild to be born, and now I am very relieved to know that he will be baptized. I must be there that day.
Math League ~ The second competition will be held at St. Matthew's on Monday, December 8, 2008. Mr. Limmina and I could use MORE help from parents to run this event. (THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY VOLUNTEERED.) We need volunteers to serve refreshments to all of the participants and to help with scoring.
Students should plan to attend AT LEAST ONE practice before the competition. This week, there will be practice after school on Tuesday and Thursday. (3:10-4:15)
OPEN MATH ROOM: 12: 40 - 1:20 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students can study for Math League at this time, or get extra help with any work, including preparation for the high school entrance examinations.
Charter Challenge: The next practices will be as follows: Wednesday, December 3, Tuesday, December 9, Wednesday, December 10, and Thursday, December 11. I am scheduling practices on different weekdays because of the students' other after school activities. No one is expected to come to every practice. Team members can practice at home by using the practice questions linked above, watching JEOPARDY, playing TRIVIAL PURSUIT, scanning newspapers and news magazines, and just reading.
Elementary Science Olympiad : The 2009 Olympiad will be held at St. Mark's High School on Saturday, February 7 from 8:15 to 2:15. This is open to students in grades four, five, and six. I will be coaching the students, with the assistance of Mrs. Davenport. Students will need the assistance of their parents and older siblings as well. Practice sessions will be held after school and on a few Saturday mornings from mid-December through January. I have given interested students permission forms already. We need a few more fourth graders. Please contact me by email or a note if interested.
