We now enter week #3 (sort of). I will check all of my classes this week to see that everyone has their supplies. This is a homework grade. (They need a 3 ring binder, looseleaf paper, dividers, a library card and pin number from the library.)
Here's what will be going on inside of room 117:
Psychology -
Expert groups have become experts on one of the "foundig fathers" of psychology and will share their expertise in a new learning group this week. New expert groups will then research a particular theory or school of thought within psychology. There is no homework in psychology this week except to get supplies
Humanities III
Students will share where they fell on the "Political Compass" (www.politicalcompass.org). We did this together in class, and students were asked to input this info on a computer and bring in their printout this week.
We'll share impressions of the weekend news: Democrats convention, McCain's v.p. choice and Gustav.
We are beginning our Immigration Unit and will start with a variety of "writer's notebook" (journal) questions to find out where people stand on various immigration issues. Students will be given a list of immigration vocabulary which will be due next week.
Rough drafts of their American Dream essays are due on Thursday/Friday.
Humanities II
We will share our impressions of the weekend news. I will check their homework which was a reflection about their values. They will receive the Philosophy of Life essay assignment which we will go over. The rough draft will be due on 9/10 for "A" day and 9/11 for "B" day.
Students will have in-class readings about conservatism versus liberalism, an ethics survey and we will discuss the differences between morality and legality.
CAP
Signed packets are due Tuesday. Students are also asked to bring in two ideas for a project.
Students need to complete 10 volunteer hours by September 25th for a "pass" to appear on their progress report. They need 20 hours by October 30th. If this is not completed, they will still be able to pass for the year, once they earn their hours, but it will mean they do not qualify for National Honor Society.
I'm looking forward to a great year!
