Now that the research papers are done, students will be using information gained about their planet/moon. Students will be asked to produce a flier advertising a vacation resort on their planet/moon. Students should use the unique features of their planet/moon as selling points. Lastly, students are challenged to think of a sport or activity that would be hightened by the planet/moon's environment. Students should describe how the sport would be altered on their planet/moon.

Planet/Moon paper is due this Friday! Students should be working on these at home. Students are given some time in class - but it is not intented to be done soley in class. Student should not copy and paste information into their paper. The paper should be in the voice of each student.

We are beginning a unit in astronomy. During this unit, we will study gravity, pressure, and scientific notation. We will learn about how astronauts survive in space. We will talk about the moon and the sun. Each student will be given a planet or a moon to research. They must write a paper covering their planet - or moon- and create a power point to present to the class. The paper will be due Feb. 8th
We watched "An Inconvienent Truth." Students were asked to write a persuasive essay on the topic of the movie. They were free to agree or disagree with the message of the movie. The essays are to be 1 page typed or two pages hand-written in length.
We are starting off this trimester with Atomic structure and the periodic table of elements. We will learn about the different subatomic particles and what role they play in determining how the atom behaves. We will talk about energy levels of electrons, and charged atoms.
We are finishing up a science project. Each student was to come up with an experiment that they can do. They were to have an independent variable and a dependent variable. They were to take numerical measurements. These measurements needed to be in metric units. They needed to do background research about their topic. Finally, they should present their experiment in a paper and a poster. These papers are due Thurday Oct 25th for B days and Friday Oct 26th for A days.

We are working on an inquiry lab to study reflection. Students should be taking notes in their lab journals. Homework will be given to reinforce concepts. Lab journals will be reviewed.

We have finished studying sound waves and will be beginning light waves. We will study many frequencies of electromagnetic waves other than light.
1/25/08
We are currently studying wave theory. The study of waves will illuminate the nature of sound and light. We have discussed the relationship between frequency and wavelength. We have begun to discuss interference and superposition of waves.
We have finished the unit about specific kinds of compounds, how they form and how they are named. We are going to learn about different kinds of chemical reactions, energy release or absorbtion during chemical reactions. We will also be predicting chemical reactions and begin stoichiometry. Stoichiometry is mathematical. Students should begin bringing calculators to class.
We are discussing what an element's position on the PT means including electronic structure. This leads us into ions, bonding and chemical reactions.
We are currently discussing the quantum mechanical model of an atom. We are mapping out each element's electronic structure and envoking Hund's Rule.
Our next topic will be ionic and covalent bonding. The quantum mechanical model will predict what charges an element will most likely become. We will also dicuss how ions of opposite charge bond together to create nuetral ionic compounds and how to name them.
