May 27th Newsletter~
Read-out Picnic
Our read-out picnic will be June 12th! We will have fun eating a picnic lunch on our beach towels, buddy read, and silent read! We will then have a guest reader. Finally, the kids will get to watch a book relay. It should be a fun filled day! Please apply sun-block at home and bring 1)beach towel, 2) sun-visor or hat, if you wish, 3)favorite books from home, 4)bag lunch or pre-order lunch on the green form sent home on 5/22.
Class Picnic
Our grade level class picnic will be on June 10th. Information was sent home on a pink paper in the 5/22 Friday Folder. Please let us know if you want to pre-order a lunch from the cafeteria and if you can contribute anything to share for the afternoon snack.
Museums of Personal History
This is a fun part of our class picnic activities. A letter will be sent home in the Friday folder 5/29, that explains what the students will need to start gathering. This will be due on June 9th.
Word Study
I am sure the kids told you there will not be a word study test this week. We will have one next week and it will be a “whole class” spelling test on some of the commonly mis-spelled words.
Here is a summary of what we will be working on over the next few weeks:
Reading: I am finished with the DRA2 and PALS testing! Yea! You will be happy to know that everyone passed the PALS with flying colors! Also, everyone in our class is reading on grade level or above! This was a very hard working class. They did a great job! We will be preparing for our plays that will be performed during the 2nd grade picnic.
Writing: We will be having the Cueing Test will be on Thursday, 5/28. There is no study guide since this will be on things they have been doing all year, contractions, abbreviations, quotes, synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, using syntax clues to complete a sentence, and knowledge of story, sentence, and language structure. We will continue to learn cursive.
Math- We started our last unit on measurement.
Students will need to be able to know the difference and compare things in: linear measurement; inches, feet, yards, centimeters, meters, mass; pounds and kilograms, liquid capacity; cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters. They will need to know how perimeter is determined. They will need to read and identify time in digital and analog clocks to the ¼, ½ and 1 hour, as well as be able to tell the temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius looking at a thermometer. Clocks and temperature has been taught all year and should be easy. The measurement test will be on June 12th (before the Read-Out Picnic).
Science: We started our last unit on Ecosystems and Habitats. I am hopeful to have the CFA test on Thursday, 6/11. A study guide is attached.

*Snack Time/ Water Bottles
Since we have a late lunch, you may want to provide your child with a healthy snack. I will provide an opportunity for students who brought a snack to eat it around 10:30. Please, no candy! Water bottles are encouraged. Please make sure the bottle has a tight cap. A pull top bottle is ideal to reduce spills.
Panther Daily Folder
The Bristow Run Panther folder will be your child’s Daily Folder. (It is being sent home with the Welcome Back to school paperwork that is to be completed.) The folder will be sent home everyday with homework or important papers. Please return it everyday with the completed homework assignments. It will also include the Reading Log (see homework below) as well as the Panther Daily Review Form. The children will complete this form daily. They will write what we learned at school that day. They will also note what encore we have the next day. This is a valuable communication tool. *Parents will need to initial it daily and add any comments if you wish.
Behavior
Each day, you will know how your child did by the Panther Daily Review Form. Green means your child maintained characteristics of a quality student with minimal reminders. Purple is a color for doing something above and beyond. (We no longer have yellow, orange or red.) An “X” over the color box means your child had difficulty maintaining the characteristics of a Quality Student and a reflection form completed by your child will be sent home to explain what behavior occurred and what behavior should have occurred. The characteristics of a Quality Student will be developed in class with student input the first week of school. If the infraction is frequent or more severe, a Panther Pride form will be completed and consequences will be administered on an individual basis.
Friday Folder
This folder will be sent home every Friday with completed work. It will also contain a weekly assessment of your child's conduct and work habits that will need to be *signed and returned in the folder on Monday.
Homework
Reading is the most important thing you can do with your child. All second grade students are expected to read at least 15 minutes each day. Your child can be read to, read with a sibling or friend, or just read independently. After your child has read, please write the number of minutes read and initial in the daily box on the Reading Calendar. The Reading Calendar is stapled to the Panther Daily Folder and should be returned daily. It will be checked as part of their homework grade. A math, language arts, social studies or science homework assignment may be sent home as well. This will be a reinforcement of what they learned in class that day.
Grading
If your child’s work has a checkmark on the assignment it means that the work was checked but not graded. If you see S+, S, S- or N, this will indicate a grade was taken on that assignment.
Summer Reading
I would like to reward each student’s hard work for reading over the summer! Please send in your reading list (signed by a parent) for extra credit. For each book read, the student will receive an extra S+ up to 5 books.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
Our school participates in AR, but it is not a requirement. How AR works~ Students read a book that is listed on the Bristow Run Accelerated Reader List. See BRES website for the list. It can be a book from home or school as long as it is on the list. Students then can take a short quiz on the book to determine how much they understood and remembered. Students receive points depending on how many questions they answered correctly. The school gives awards based on how many AR points a student earns. My position on AR is that I will encourage students to take an AR test on any AR book they have read. I offer time in my class for students to take them during morning work, center time, when other work is completed, at the library or computer time, and any other time that does not interfere with the lessons being taught. I do not give grades for them because I feel that students should not be limited to reading only AR books.
Communication
Communication between home and school is very important! I want to work together to ensure your child has a positive and successful year! The best way to get in contact with me is by email. My address is Edwardpx@pwcs.edu. You may call the school and leave a message. You can also send a note in their Daily Folder or on the Panther Daily Review Form. I will try to respond back to you at my earliest convenience. I have also set up an account at SchoolNotes.com. You can access it with the zip code, 20136, of our school. I will try to keep it up to date with any important information and dates. Classroom newsletters will be sent home as necessary throughout the year.

Birthdays
If you would like to send in a birthday treat in honor of your child’s birthday, please make sure that it is something that can be easily handed out at lunchtime (i.e. cookies, cupcakes, brownies, fruit snacks). Please do not send in anything that requires freezing, refrigeration or cutting.
The Star Student
Each week we will have a Star Student. This student will be our shining star for a week. They will get a chance to bring in items on Wednesday for Show and Share that week. I will send home a form the week before for the child to complete. They should return the form on the first day of the week they are the Star Student as well as bring two 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 pictures to put on our Star Door. So, start looking for those pictures now!
Transportation Changes
If your child will be going home in an alternative fashion (even for a day) than what you have originally specified to the school, it is very important you send a note with your signature to school indicating the change. Otherwise, they will be sent home as you originally indicated. DO NOT EMAIL THE CHANGE IN TRANSPORTATION THE DAY OF THE CHANGE BECAUSE I MAY NOT SEE THE EMAIL UNTIL AFTER DISMISSAL.
Book Club
Book Club order forms will be sent home occasionally. This is a wonderful opportunity to build your child’s home library at reduced prices. Our class will earn points that will add up to free books for the class library. If you would like to order books, please return the completed form to me with a check made payable to the book club.
Thank you so much for your support! I look forward to an awesome school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Edwards
