I am very excited to have your child in my second grade class and I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning experiences!
Daily Schedule:
Our daily schedule is listed below. We are on a 7-day rotation for Encore classes with specialists. Our class will be split this year between the seven other second grade teachers. Your child's encore schedule can be found in the Panther Folder.
Daily Schedule
9:00 9:45 Core Extension (Enrichment/Remediation)
9:45 11:45 Language Arts
11:45 12:30 Science or Social Studies
12:30 12:40 Math
12:40 1:10 Lunch
1:10 1:25 Recess
1:25 2:45 Math
2:45 3:30 Encore Class
3:30 Dismissal
Students may visit the library every day if they return one or both books. A library sign-up sheet is available in the classroom and students who write their names on this sheet can visit the library and get new books. I encourage students to get new books daily rather than waiting for the Library Encore Class.
Snacks:
Since we eat lunch at 12:40, your child will need a nutritious snack each day. Snacks, such as fruits, vegetables, or granola bars, may be brought to school each day. Students will have the opportunity to eat snacks in the morning.
Birthday Celebrations:
When your child has a birthday, you may send a special treat to share with our 23 students during the lunch period. This is optional so please let me know the date if you plan to do this. At this time I am not aware of any severe food allergies but I will let you know if this changes.
Panther Daily Review Folder:
Your child will bring home the BRES Panther Folder each day. The "Panther Daily Review" form will be in this folder. Please initial that you have seen this form and send it back the next day. This will provide a means of daily communication. You will be able to see the behavior your child has shown each day by the color of the square on the form. The colors are purple (Outstanding Above and Beyond) and green (Great Behavior). There is space on the form for the student to reflect on his/her day.
Friday Folder:
Every Friday the Friday Folder will be sent home. Please review the announcements and the work contained in the Friday Folder. Please initial the weekly progress form and return the folder on Monday. The work in the folder may be kept at home.
Homework:
Homework is assigned on a regular basis.
Reading: Students are expected to read a minimum of 15 minutes each night. A Bristow Run Reading Calendar is stapled inside the Panther folder. After your child reads each night, please write the number of minutes read and initial in the daily box on the calendar.
Math: Students will be given Math homework as needed throughout the week. When homework is given, it will be listed on the Panther Daily Review.
Spelling/Word Study: Words will be sent home on a regular basis so that students may study them.
Book Club Orders:
I will be sending home book club order forms throughout the year. If you would like to purchase books, please complete the order form and return it to me with a check made payable to the book club company. It takes about three weeks to receive the book order.
Independent Reading and Five Finger Rule:
A quick way to check if a book is too hard for your child to read is to use the 5 finger rule. Hold up your hand. Have your child read a page to you. Every time he/she can't read a word, a finger goes down. One finger down is okay, two fingers - the book is still pretty easy to read. Three fingers - the child may need help and is not independent. Four and five fingers - the book is too hard at this time. Save the book to read at a later time if it is too hard.
I look forward to working with your child this year! If you have any questions about procedures, activities, or your child's progress, please write a note, call, or email me at weavernb@pwcs.edu and I will be happy to respond to your questions. Thank you for your interest and support!
