Second grade will be filled with new experiences, new learning and for some students a brand new school! To make a smooth transition to the new school year, I would like to inform you of our classroom procedures.

The following is a list of the supplies that your child will need:
4 composition notebooks
7 pocketfolders
#2 pencils – at least 12
washable markers
scissors
white school glue & 6 glue sticks
backpack
loose-leaf binder (1 inch spine)
box of watercolors
1 4-pack dry erase markers
crayons
school box
2 boxes tissues
2 packages small paper cups
1 bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer (not liquid soap)

1 box snack size Ziploc bags
Boys: 1 pack baby wipes

Homework
All Second Grade students are required to read for at least 15 minutes each school night as part of their homework. Each month, students will have a reading record calendar stapled into their Daily Folder. You will need to initial the calendar each night. From time to time, our math program, Investigations, will have worksheets and games as homework. Those assignments will be sent home in the Daily Folder and will need to be returned the following day. Once we begin our Word Study (Spelling) program, students will also need to prepare for a weekly spelling test.
Take Home Folders
Each student has a Bristow Run Daily Folder. A detailed letter about the Daily Folder was sent home on the first day of school. (See the black school folder marked "Return Daily.")
Encore Specials
With block scheduling, our specials are on a 7-day rotation.
Day 1 P.E.
Day 2 Music
Day 3 Science Lab
Day 4 Art
Day 5 P.E.
Day 6 Computer Lab/Math
Day 7 Library
It’s important that you help you child remember tennis shoes for P.E. and books for Library.
Lunch, Snack and Recess
Our lunchtime is from 12:45 to 1:15. Students always enjoy having parents join us for lunch!
Recess will be from 12:30 to 12:45.
Snack: We have a very late lunch and so I encourage students to bring a nutritious snack for the long morning. Fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, dry cereal, etc. are fine but no sugary, unhealthy snacks please.
Panther Daily Review
Each student has a Bristow Run Take Home folder that will come home daily. The Panther Daily Review form will be in this folder. Thank you for initialing this form each day. You will be able to see what we learned at school that day and you will be able to see your child's behavior. Please look for a color word on the indicated line. The colors are green (good job showing Quality Student behavior), purple(exceptional Quality Student behavior), green and 'no color' (unable to show Quality Student behavior).
Friday Folders
Each Friday, papers and projects from the previous school week will be sent home. I ask that you go through this work with your child giving praise and reinforcement. Please sign the Weekly Report in the appropriate place and add comments if you wish. Please return all work on Monday (or the next school day). I will keep all work at school until the end of the grading period. At that time, we’ll select pieces for our portfolios and the rest will be sent home for good.
Friday Folders will begin Friday, September 12.
Accelerated Reader
We have a school wide reading incentive connected with the A.R. program. Each point earned for reading an A.R. book and then passing the test will accumulate for a library prize. Please encourage your child to check out at least one A.R. book from our school library on our library day.
Labels
Please see that your child's name is on all possessions that come to school - clothing, lunch boxes, supplies, books, etc.
Water Bottles
I also encourage my students to bring a water bottle to school each day. Being hydrated, eating healthy food and getting exercise helps to make everyone a better learner.
Volunteers
I always appreciate help at school! If you have extra time and can help in any way, please let me know.
I am pleased to have your child in my second grade class and I am looking forward to an exciting year at Bristow Run! Please don't hesitate to call, email or send a note with questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Rosemary Wolfe
