Dear Families,
Greetings once again!  As we close out the month of January, February is right behind waiting to get started up. Although it is the shortest month of the year, we certainly are full of events taking place in February at Bond Mill.  For starters, the 2nd Quarter Honor Roll Assemblies will take place on Friday, February 3rd.  Please note that there is a slight change with our assemblies.  The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade assembly will begin at 8:15am.  1st and 2nd grade will begin at approximately 9:15am.  The reason for this one-time change is that 5th grade has a field trip on February 3rd and will be leaving at 9:30am.  Other events taking place in February include: our PTO Board meeting on the 7th at 2:15pm, a half-day of school on Monday the 13th (dismissal begins at 10:55am), our Valentine’s Day parties begin at 12:30 on the 14th, a fun family-oriented event we are calling Zumba Mania occurs on the 15th from 6:30pm-8pm, and we are closed on Monday, February 20th.  Sprinkle in some potential snow days and February is bound to be a busy month.  The next Bulldog will be coming home on Friday, February 10th.  If there is anything you need between now and then, do not hesitate to contact me.  Have a great weekend!

Bond Mill Write-A-Book:  Congratulations to everyone for submitting absolutely terrific Write-A-Books.  This year’s group of books was one of the most impressive literary creations to date.  Unfortunately, we are only allowed to send some of the books on to the County competition.  Congratulations to those authors!

Weather Conditions:  If you signed up for the automatic text when schools are closed for emergencies, you got it last weekend when activities were cancelled due to snow/ice.  Cool, huh?  Remember, for late openings and closings, refer to past Bulldogs, your Parent Handbook or sign up for the auto text through the PGCPS website.  PLEASE – do NOT call the school!!  Thank you.

3rd Grade Stargazing Night:  Last night our spectacular third graders performed brilliantly during our annual Stargazing Night Celebration.  Anyone who was in attendance knows exactly what I’m referring to.  In spite of the clouds, it was stellar and absolutely out of this world . . . get it? :-)  Sorry, cheesy jokes are the only type of jokes I know.  Thank you to the students, parents, and staff for truly doing an amazing job!

Fire Prevention Poster Contest:  Congratulations to the following students for being selected by the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Prevention Committee as recipients of the 2011 Fire Prevention Poster Award.  These students were honored this past weekend in a special ceremony.  Way to go!!!!!

Red Cross Blood Drive:  Scotchtown Hills Elementary School will host a Blood Drive in honor of Marisol Ramirez.  Marisol is a Scotchtown Hills student who has received a multi-organ transplant and routinely receives blood transfusions.  Without past donations, Marisol would not be here today.  The Blood Drive will take place on February 29th from 2pm-8pm in the Art Room at Scotchtown Hills Elementary.  Please contact Aubrie Santuccio at 301-497-3994 or aubri.santuccio@pgcps.org to schedule your life-saving donation.

To Those Ravens Fans . . . OUCH!!!!  Even though I live in Baltimore, I am far from a Ravens fan.  However, watching the way their season ended this past Sunday was just about as cruel an ending as one team can endure.  The one good thing you Ravens fans have going for you is that you are surrounded by Redskins, Steelers, Cowboys, and yes, Buccaneers fans, who know all too well what the agony of defeat is all about.  So, if you need a shoulder to cry on, come find one of us, we’ll take good care of you. :-)

Team Jersey Day:  And with that said, with the Super Bowl coming up on February 5th, we have one last opportunity to celebrate our love of football.  This coming Friday, February 3rd will be Team Jersey Day.  Yes, that is the same day as our Honor Roll assemblies.  Rather than us getting dressed in our finest duds like we normally do for Honor Roll assemblies, let’s change things up.   I think it will actually be a pretty cool sight to see, as we all wear our favorite team jerseys while honoring our students at the assemblies.  So, students, staff, AND PARENTS should all wear your favorite team jerseys on February 3rd.

Grandparents’ Day:  It’s never too early to start planning.  Grandparents’ Day is going to be on Thursday, March 29th.  For those new to Bond Mill, Grandparents’ Day is a wonderful celebration of our grandparents.  Grandparents are invited into classrooms to take part in a day of fun.  Much more information will be sent home as the date approaches.

Honor Roll Assembly:  Yes, I have already mentioned this in the introductory paragraph, as well as in the “Important Dates” section of The Bulldog.  I even did a phone call-out a couple of weeks ago so you should have received a phone message from me.  However, I feel compelled to mention it a fourth time because I REEEAALLLYYYYY want to make sure you understand that we are changing the normal routine of our Honor Roll assemblies for just this one time.  On Friday, February 3rd, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Honor Roll assembly will begin at 8:15am and the 1st and 2nd grade assembly will begin at 9:15am.  So help me, if you show up at the wrong time….you’ll be fitted for an adult-sized dunce cap and made to sit in the corner of the Multipurpose Room!  With Love, Justin

Dear Families,
Allow me to be the last person to wish you a Happy New Year!  I trust everyone had a relaxing, fun, and safe vacation.  I must admit, having almost two full weeks off was awesome!  Now that 2012 has arrived, we have hit the ground running.  Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders completed the FAST 2 administration, Mrs. Emery is back with us teaching art, and throughout the building the students and staff are working harder than ever.  Of course, you as parents play an enormous role in the successes our students achieve, so thank you for your continued efforts at home.  It really does make all the difference in the world.  Please make special note on your calendars that students are off the next two Mondays (January 16th and 23rd).  I should also mention that this is normally around the time that school delays, early dismissals, and closings begin to occur because of snow.  Read below about all of the ways you can get information, including a new way - an automatic text!  The next Bulldog will be coming home on Friday, January 27th.  If there is anything you need between now and then, do not hesitate to contact me.  Have a great weekend!

Change in PGCPS Calendar:  Monday, February 13 was originally a day off for students.  As announced last October, this day is now a half day for students to make up for one of the two days we missed at the beginning of the year when we were hit by both a hurricane and an earthquake.  The children will be dismissed at 10:55 am, three hours earlier than normal.  Morning buses will pick up on time, and “afternoon” buses will drop off three hours earlier than normal.  Please be sure your child’s teacher knows your child’s aftercare arrangements.

Finishing Touch:  For those 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade families who received invitations for Finishing Touch, there was a small typo.  On the invitation, it stated that Finishing Touch will begin on Thursday, January 18th.  It SHOULD have stated that Finishing Touch will begin on Thursday, January 19th.  My apologies for any confusion.  Please look for a letter with more information.

Hospitality Committee:  There is nothing like starting the new year with some delicious food!  Thank you to the Hospitality Committee for providing us with a scrumptious meal this past Tuesday.  As I always do on days when the HC is visiting us, I call my buddies at other schools and ask what they are eating for lunch.  Needless to say, they are jealous of my response!

Be Informed Of Late Openings, Early Closings, and Snow Days:  As you are well aware, Mother Nature can be quite unpredictable when it comes to winter weather.  A good habit to get into is checking the news in the morning to make sure that there have not been any weather related delays or closings.  If you go to the County website, www.pgcps.org, you can sign up to have direct alerts sent to you via text and e-mail.  Please make sure to discuss with your children what you expect them to do in the event of an early closing.  And of course, make sure your child’s teacher knows as well.  Trust me, it makes those days when we have early closings go sooooo much smoother.

Spanish Language Budget Hearing:  The County has been and will continue to hold public meetings for next year’s operating budget.  One meeting in particular, February 7th, will be held strictly in Spanish.  If you are interested, the meeting will be held at 6:30pm at Northwestern HS.

West Laurel Civic Association Meeting:  There will be a Neighborhood Watch Coordination Meeting sponsored by the West Laurel Civic Association on January 19th at 7pm.  The meeting will be held at the West Laurel Building.  There will be a representative of the FBI in attendance as the issues of cybercrimes and protection of records will be discussed.

News from the Health Room

I would like to thank all our families who have supported the Eat Well Do Well program at the Silver Diner.  Our funds have been used to purchase apples for everyone, our first Annual Turkey Trot, and our holiday Zumbathon. Look for new recess and physical education equipment in the near future.  I would like to wish everyone a healthy, happy new year.
