JOURNALISM: Made deadline for special graduation issue today. The underclassmen helped to make the deadline big time. The paper will be sold next week on Wednesday. It is 32 pages and is in full color. The students did an outstanding job. PRIOR April issue is due at the printers. Staff is starting on May issue. First article due Monday;second article due Friday. Editing and layout is now being done. We need patrons and ads. Student Reporters have been assigned two articles each.Assignment and photo lists are done. Last Will and Testament forms and Senior Superlative forms passed out to Senior Class. Students are subject to a daily news quiz. Students are involved in an on-going ad and patron sales campaign covering the local area. They are seeking advertising and have been trained how to meet with the business sector.
ENGLISH-We finished our study of Romeo and Juliet. Unit test and essays were assigned. Students are in their last stage of their research paper based on their thesis statement about Shakespeare's writing or any topic related to Shakespeare or the Elizabethan Period.Notecards have been checked. Outlines are due tomorrow and the paper is due on Tuesday, May 27. We are starting an in-class study of the novel Of Mice and Men. Notebooks will be checked on May 28.PRIOR:We are currently reading and analyzing Romeo and Juliet. Students are taking notes and discussing each scene as it is broken down by the students and me. We are studying both Shakespeare's writing style as well as Shakespeare's life itself. Students are reading their parts aloud with gusto! They are subject to a quiz at the end of each act. They take notes as we go along. They have been assigned a choice of doing one of 30 Romep and Juliet projects which are due May 6. I explained each project in detail and showed them examples from former students. PRIOR: As part of our non-fiction unit we have spent the last ten days analyzing speeches of Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Maya Angelou. Students have read, viewed and discussed speeches as well as the techniques of the deliveries.
Students wrote a mini"I Have a Dream " speech of their own. The major assignment of the past week has been focused on writing a persuasive speech on their controversial topic. Students have learned how to write the controlling thesis statement, the body, and the conclsion of their speech. They have also been taught how to deliver their speech using notecards. THEIR WRITTEN REPORT AND SPEECH ARE DUE ON TUESDAY, FEB. 19. PRIOR:We are currently engaged in a unit on poetry. They are analyzing several Poe poems:Annabelle Lee and The Bells. PRIOR:Quiz tomorrow on "Cask of Amontillado. Students will also be assigned to write a BCR based on describing the mood that Poe creates in his story. Students will present novels to the class on Monday."PRIOR:Quiz tomorrow on "The Most Dangerous Game." Map projects due Monday. Oct. 8. Tonight's homework is p. 58, #5 and #6. Also, students must explain the theme of "The Most Dangerous Game." Persuasive essay to be explained on Thursday. The use of puns and literary allusions have been taught this week as well as a revisiting of conflicts,foreshadowing,and the basic structure of the short story.SAT Vocabulary Quiz and guidance orientation are scheduled for Oct. 5. Outside-of-class novel report is due Oct.10. Notebook/Journal will be graded on Oct.11. PRIOR: Quiz today. Finished story, "The Necklace." To discuss theme/plot Monday.Finish vocabulary and story analysis worksheet for homework.Quiz on story Monday. PRIOR:We will be focusing on the short story, "The Necklace." Recently we have covered notetaking, proofreading and revising as well as BCR scoring. We have also established a procedure for peer editing. Students should constantly review their notes as standard homework. Multiple choice (selected response)quizzes will be given after every reading selection. As an incentive to take notes and keep them organized, students will be able to use their notes for the quizzes, but not for tests. Grammar is periodically reviewed throughout the week. Outside-of-class novel report is due Oct.10. Notebook/Journal will be graded on Oct.11.
SAT Vocabulary Quiz is scheduled for Sept. 14.
Focused on BCR writing and scoring-wrote BCR. Students are practicing proofreading and revising. PRIOR:We have read "Plainswoman" while concentrating on reading strategies. Students have reviewed the scoring of BCRs and will write one tonight. Their individual time management plans have been submitted. We have also started our grammar review. We are now focusing on parts of speech. Students have been assigned an outside of class reading of a novel. Their choice of novel and parent permission slip is now due.
FUTURE: We will cover new vocabulary and start a new short story ("Most Dangerous Game") next week. This will lead us to a literary analysis of the short story. PRIOR:Students should come to class prepared with a 3-ring binder. An organized notebook is expected. Notetaking skills and time management are currently being taught. We are also learning Latin and Greek roots for SAT vocabulary practice. Students are learning the core learning goals and being exposed to the grading rubric of an ECR and BCR.Students are also working on diagnostic writing assignments. During the first week each student presented an informal speech about themselves using objects as guidelines. Our first literature unit will focus on short stories.Two story-related writing assignments will be given. The Basics of Paragraph writing will be covered and it will continue to be a work in progress.
TV PRODUCTION 1
Students are editng their movie projects which are due on May 28.PRIOR:Four separate groups are working on writing their original scripts to a mini-movie based on real-life teenage situations. They are practicing their lines and planning their staging of the production. On May 6 their technology report is due.PRIOR:CURRENTLY WORKING IN GROUPS IN THE STUDIO CREATING THEIR ORIGINAL COMMERCIALS. THEY ARE ALSO WORKING ON A RESEARCH PAPER ON A FIGURE OR INVENTION THAT HAS IMPACTED HOLLYWOOD prior:Technology Reports are due November 9. Demonstration Projects continue through November 20. PRIOR:We are focusing on storyboard writing. Students are also required to turn in their press releases based on their newsbeats, which are due Nov.1. Our next major project is a moving demonstration in front of class. They have the detailed assignmment.Technology Research Reports are due Nov. 9. PRIOR:We're evaluating interviews.We are also critiquing Homecoming video. Notebooks checked on Oct. 11. Next project will be Demonstrations and Technology Reports. PRIOR: Students are currently involved in an interviewing project which evaluates both interviewing and camera skills. The projects will be critiqued the following week.
PRIOR:Students have learned the complete workings of the camcorder, the battery, the charger and the tripod as well as the wireless mic.
Students first major project involves interviewing each other in trios: a camera operator, an interviewee, and an interviewer. All roles switch. They must demonstrate the proper interviewing and camera operataion skills which will be taught. After focusing on the history and theory of television, we will learn the workings of the camera, tripod, use of battery and charger, backlight, and the proper use of wireless mics. They will be taught camera techniques for location shooting around specific areas of the school.
They are also subject to a daily news quiz in their quest to be video journalists.Parents, please encourage students to read the newspaper or listen to the radio news or watch tv or computer news.
Their two required school-related tapings are due one week before the end of the quarter. We have focused on proper techniques on shooting fall sports.
Students have learned interview techniques for mic interviews as well as shooting techniques.They have learned the operating techniques of the camcorder, tripod, monopod, and battery use. They have been taught how to use the wireless microphone and how to interview properly with a mic. They will interview each other while one student uses the camera effectively. They will be interviewing each other next week. Students need a three ring binder for this class.
Technology project is due Sept. 30.We have also been concentrating on introductory theories of television such as purposes, negative and positive aspects of tv, and the elements of a good show.
Future Projects:Demonstrations and Commercials!!!
Students will produce original commercials. We will study Madison Avenue techniques of advertising and will apply them to a finished product which will take place in the studio. Students are required to submit script, storyboard, shot sheet, and floor plan. Students will tape demonstrations in the classroom. Students will be taught the use of scripts and storyboard writing as well as shot sheets for camera operators to follow the action. Students are reminded to fulfill their two tapings per quarter grade requirement.
PRIOR: Also concentrating on some television production terminology using our new textbooks
TV2/3 Students are editing their Grease project. PRIOR:Students are practicng the acting of four scenes from the play/movie Grease. Casting has been done. The students will use two camera shot in the studio. They must be in costume with props and backdrop. This is their major fourth quarter project. PRIOR:STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON THEIR ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY FOR A MINI-MOVIE. Cabaret Project is complete. Individual projects are due December 13. Tapings are due. Dec. 17. PRIOR:Students are producing and editing a Cabaret of Talent in the studio as well as a post Homecoming show for Laurel Cable. PRIOR:Students will be working on tv shows for Laurel Cable as well as original projects. They will also working on editing a variety of projects including "The Senior Year in Review." Production students are organizing the studio as well as becoming familiar with some new equipment which has been acquired.
The class has edited their first presentations and have practiced laying down music and credits. Each student is being tested for the abitlity to do these procedures.
They will be creating a Homecoming show for school and Laurel Cable broadcast. We are seeking computers so we may do more digital editing. They are required to videotape two events per quarter.
