VOCABULARY:
Students are learning words used in academic English and commonly found on the Maryland State High School Assessments.LITERATURE/READING:
Students read authentic American literature written by various American authors including some well-known ones. They are learning about authors' purposes for writing, definitions of what a character is, a setting, mood, and other literary terms, and becoming aquainted with various genres of writing. Students are also increasing their reading comprehension by adding reading vocabulary and improving fluency and other comprehension skills.
GRAMMAR:
Students learn word usage, subject-verb aggreement, typical English sentence structure, spelling rules, and common irregular past tenses (85 in all).
WRITING:
Students work on basic sentence writing, expressing thoughts in writing, and basic paragraph writing.
QUARTER 2
In American Literature we are reading various poems written by American poets and learning to recognize literary terms most often associated with poetry which include, stanza, personification, meter/rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, and repetion. In late December we will read the short story, "The
Gift of the Magi."
In grammar we are learning the many forms of irregular simple past tense verbs and how to spell them correctly. We are also continuing to learn about subject and object usage, and to recognize adjectives as well as how to punctuate dialogue.
In vocabulary we are covering lessons 6 through 12, each with 10 words for a total of 60 vocabulary words.
In writing we will learn to write in order to recall detail and write about past events.
