Notebooks, Folders, and Supplies
Notebooks

Each student is required to have a 3-ring binder and lined paper for this course.  It must be at least a one inch binder complete with divider tabs and will be set up as follows:

•    Section one – Reference hand-outs.  The first hand-outs should be the student guidelines, grading policy and this sheet.
•    Section two – Warm-ups (There may be quizzes related to the warm-ups, so please indicate the topic.)
•    Section three – Class notes. It is vital that you take notes in order to be successful in this class.
•    Section four – Classwork and any homework I hand back.
•    Section five – SAT Words

You will also be required to have a composition book for Journal Entries and Reading Logs.  Journals can take place during class or for homework, depending on the assignment.  Your composition book will be checked four times throughout each quarter.

Folders

I will keep a folder in the classroom for each student.  It will contain all major writing assignments and tests.  You will have access to this folder, but are not allowed to take anything from the folder out of this classroom.  If you request one, I will give you a log to record the grades you get from the assignments/tests contained in the folder so you can keep track of your progress.  Where will this log be placed in your notebook?

You will also need to be aware that we will be reading novels. The novels can either be from the library (school or public) or purchased.
Journal and Reading Logs

Your composition book will include both Journals and Reading Logs. Please do not mix these together (i.e. your journal will be in the first half and reading logs in the second half).

I will check your Journals and Reading Logs four times each quarter. I will choose at least one journal and one reading log on which to focus. Reading logs will be checked for grammar as well and content and journals will be checked for completion.
Journals

Journals are brief responses that allow students to share their ideas and personal views on a given subject. The idea is to allow students to express their ideas freely. Even though they are not graded for grammar, they should be written in Standard English.  Each journal must be at least three sentences in length.

Reading Logs

You will be required to read one (1) novel a quarter outside of the daily curriculum. These novels must be from the approved reading list. The Approved Reading List has been updated and several titles have been added.

In your composition book, you will respond to these novels in the following way:

Each novel will be divided into quarters.** After reading each quarter of the novel, you will write two paragraphs in the format below:

•    Author and title
•    Page numbers
•    Paragraph 1 – a brief summary of the excerpt
•    Paragraph 2 – your reflection on the excerpt (This could include how you felt about the section, something important or meaningful you found, a connection you made with your life, the world, or another work, etc.)

For example, if a book is 280 pages, you should complete a reading log after every 70 pages.
It must be in the above format or you will not receive credit.

The journals/reading logs will be collected and graded 2 times per quarter. Each journal entry is 10 points and each reading log is 50 points.  I will need to see 2 Reading Logs each time your composition book is collected (which means you’ve read ~100 pages of your book each time).  Two books must be completed by the end of each quarter.  The dates will be given at the beginning of the quarter and posted in the room and on my schoolnotes page.   The journal entries will vary per collection period.

** Please see the Approved Reading List for more information.

Note: If one of the above books has fewer than 200 pages, please divide it so that you can still have 4 reading logs (ex. A Streetcar Named Desire has 144 pages, so you should complete a reading log every 36 pages). If it has more than 200 pages but still only counts as one book, , please do the same (ex. Ceremony has 272 pages, so complete your reading log every 68 pages). Books that count as two for the quarter should be divided into 8 Reading Logs (ex. Invisible Man has 608 pages, so your reading log should be completed every 76 pages).
