Happy New Year!
Welcome back to a new beginning.  We started today with talking about New Year's resolutions.  Each student is writing at least one resolution.  Stop by our resolution luggage and see what the students have said about making changes.  We are now in third quarter.  Your children will be expected to apply themselves and should begin to work independently and securely.  They should only need help with clarification with their homework, not a complete supervision of homework completion.  Children in the second half of second grade are generally making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn.  Encourage your child to read independently daily.

A Day Which Will Live in Infamy!" Declared Pres. Roosevelt on December 7, 1941. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, stunned virtually everyone in the United States military. Japan’s carrier-launched bombers found Pearl Harbor totally unprepared. President Franklin Roosevelt quickly addressed Congress to ask for a declaration of war. Although he never mentioned Europe or the fact that Germany had by then declared war on the United States, the Pearl Harbor attack allowed him to begin the larger intervention in the European war he had long wanted.

See if you can take nature walks with your children.  See if you can even take a camping trip with them before it gets too cold.  These types of experiences at home will help them have a greater understanding of the concepts we are discussing in the classroom. In RELA class today, we have worked on publishing our stories.  I will present them to you at a later date.

In math we learned how to use skip counting skills to help us count coins.

We began planning our display board for the science fair on November 9th and 12th.  Be sure to save the dates, so you can check out what we've learned.

Students were given their spelling word lists today.  Have them tell you about the Vowel Consonant silent e pattern that we have been talking about in class.  They will recognize VCe.  Hopefully they can tell you about "mean-ol'-nasty-silent-e!"

October 8, 2007

It's Columbus Day.  Today we watched a movie that told us a little bit about who Christopher Columbus was and that he sailed across the Atlantic to the "New World."

We are continuing to watch the effects of the different amounts of water on our plants, for our science fair project.  Stop by and take a look.

Our plants have already taken the water out of the soil through the roots, stems and leaves, and have transpired the water into the air.  It will be exciting to talk about this in science today!

I plan to have a spelling test on Monday.

Tonight's homework:
Read for 20 minutes and enter the information on the "Book-It" reading log.  Each month, your child can earn a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut with a complete "Book-It" reading log.

October 3, 2007
We finished building our terrariums today.  We will spend the next month monitoring the plants to see how well they do inside the plastic containers.

In RELA class we are discussing the reading skills of predict and infer.  These two skills help a reader understand the text they are reading.  When a reader predicts what is going to happen in a story, they pay more attention to the story to discover if their prediction is correct.  When a reader can make inferences, they are able to gain a deeper meaning of the text and are able to tell what is going on in the story, that the author does not say directly.

In math we are exploring ways in which we can efficiently count, such as by tens, fives, or twos.  We will also explore the relationships between numbers such as greater than, less than, or equal to.

Tonight's homework:
Read for 20 minutes.  Reading logs are due tomorrow, as the "Book It" program sponsored by Pizza Hut will begin tomorrow.

Complete the back side of both math pages.

Write, read, and spell wipe, yet, and wide tonight if you are in the green and blue groups.

Write read and spell banged, music, rabbits, blankets, and windows if you are in the purple group.

October 2, 2007

We had fun starting our terrariums today.  Tomorrow we will be able to put in the Angel plant and seal the lids and find out what happens when there is no water, not enough water, just the right amount of water, and too much water.  Ask your child for their predictions about what will happen in each terrarium.

Homework tonight:
Read for 20 minutes and record your reading on the reading log.
Finish the math page we began in class today.
Study spelling words by reading them, spelling them and writing them, (three times each is a good idea).

September 14, 2007
Wow the time sure does get past me!  I apologize for not having a homework message for Wednesday.  Tonight's homework is to read for 20 minutes, Complete the math page and study the spelling words: went, mop, and hug.

The math assignment is very challenging for some students.  We are talking about fact families.  I have taught them to put the numbers in a triangle with the "daddy" at the top point, the "mommy" on the left point and the "baby" on the right point.  In the number sentence 5+3=8, the 8 (largest number) is the daddy, the 5(the middle number) is the mommy, and the 3(smallest number) is the baby.  Using the three digits in this fact family, you can make 4 number sentences.  They are:
5+3=8
3+5=8
8-3=5
8-5=8
All four number sentences are related because they all use the same numbers.  This makes it a fact family.  Your children struggled with this concept in school today, and we will cover it some more next week.  Please check with your child to see if they need assistance with their math homework tonight.  Like I stated, it is very challenging for some students.  If the children work on their math homework for 20 minutes then I will be satisfied.  I do not want them to be too overwhelmed.

The Scholastic Book Fair began today.  Your child was given a wish list to write down any books they may want.  They will have a chance to purchase books next week and parents can also purchase books during the PTA meeting next week.

September 11, 2007
Today we are tributing the heros and heroines of September 11, 2001.  There will be a special school broadcast for our students.

The only homework is to attend the Back to School Night event beginning at 7:00 pm.  Hope to see you there.  Your child will be awarded a one night homework pass if you are able to attend.

September 10, 2007
Welcome to another week of school!  Two events to keep in mind as you plan your week.  The first is that Tuesday night is back to school night.  Please attend and your child will recieve a homework pass.  The second is that on Thursday, there is no school.

Thank you for being so responsive in sending in tennis balls with your children.  Our ears and floors will benefit greatly.

Tonight's homework:  Students are to read for 20 minutes (each night) and they are to find three items that show who they are.  These items must be able to fit into the paper bags the students have decorated in class today and are bringing home this afternoon.

Welcome to a new school year and a year of excitement in second grade!  For the first week or two of school, the students will be able to share about themselves in a variety of ways.  We will complete writing, reading, social studies, math, and science tasks while we get to know each other.  I look forward to working with your children, my students  this year.

Please click the portion that says "Notify Me", so that you will be kept informed of daily and weekly notices as I make changes to the information.

I would be pleased to communicate with you via e-mail, it is the most efficient way to keep in contact with me.  I will check my e-mail frequently and will get back to you as soon as I am able.

You are welcome to visit us during the day in the classroom, but be sure to check in with the school office before you enter room 119.

Here's to a great new school year at Rosa L. Parks!

Mrs. Schiebel
