SPELLING

Spelling homework is due each week on Thursday.  There are three different activities to complete each week.  All spelling work (except the practice worksheet) must be completed in the Spelling notebook or on a computer.

1.  Write 10 sentences using 2 spelling words in each sentence.  Each sentence must make sense, and should be at least 10 words long.  Or write a paragraph or story using all 20 spelling words.

2.  Complete both sides of the practice worksheet.

3.  Create a game or puzzle (wordsearch, crossword puzzle, unscramble, etc.) using your spelling words.  You do not need to solve the puzzle!

MATH

Practice multiplication/division facts OR play a game on emgames.com for at least 10 minutes each night.  Complete the math log and have an adult initial it.

READING

Read 20 minutes each night and complete the reading log.

Reading Tips for Parents:
*Suggest to your child that s/he does pre-reading strategies such as: thinking about the topic, looking at the title, headings and pictures, look at questions before hand.

*Suggest to your child that s/he does during reading strategies such as: pause to ask yourself questions about what your are reading, make connections to things you already know about, figure out the meaning of new words, stop and rephrase what you've just read, reread if you don't understand or remember, visualize pictures in your mind of what you are reading.

*Suggest to your child s/he does after reading strategies such as: tell someone aloud what you have just read, answer questions about what you have read, review what you have learned, write down a few things you have read, discuss your ideas about what you read with someone else, draw pictures of what you have read.

*Take turns reading with your child and then each of you ask comprehension questions of the other.

*Make sure your child sees you reading.  Be a role model! Read with your child.

*Get books that interest your child.  Frequently take him/her to a library or bookstore.  Give books as gifts.

*Expand your child's vocabulary by teaching him/her a new word every day.

*Take an interest in what your child is reading.
