L.A. 8 -- Finish reading "Man From the South" and answer the following questions:

1.) Come up with and explain two examples or scenes of irony from the story.

2.) We don't know very much about the narrator from the story.  Why do you think he agreed to "referee" the bet?  What might this show about him?

3.) "Man from the South" and "The Landlady," both by Roald Dahl, clearly have some paralells (besides being strange).  One in particular is how similar the young American from "Man" is to Billy Weaver in "The Landlady."  Explain how they are similar to each other.

*Hint: Think of the way that they act, and also how the landlady/"old man" act toward THEM.

1.) How is Anita similar to the nurse from "R and J"?

3.) Unlike "R and J," we know why these gangs/families are feuding.  Explain briefly WHY they don't get along, and/or hate each other.

Both Romeo and Juliet deceive many people around them to get what they want.  Pick another piece of literature (play, short story, or novel) in which a protagonist(s) deceives someone or others to get something.

Make sure that you explain the REASONS WHY the person or people feel the need to deceive others, and if they made the right (or wrong)choice in doing so.

2.) How do we know that all of his "visions" (and escape) were NOT real?  Explain.  What did Peyton possibly do then (if not ACTUALLY doing the things it appears he did)?  

L.A. 7 -- Finish Act III scene 3 (up until pg. 153), and answer the following questions:

1.)On page 149, why does Friar Lawrence chastize (criticize) Romeo so much?  Consider the lines:

"Art thou a man? Thy form cries out thy art.
Thy tears are womanish; thy wild acts [denote]
the unreasonable fury of a beast."

2.)Why is Romeo ungrateful that the Prince banished Romeo, rather than sentencing him to death?

Why would Romeo say such a strange thing (that he is neither Romeo, or a Montague)?

L.A. 7 -- Finish reading "R and J" up to the end of Act I, Scene 2 (pg. 33), and answer the following questions:

1.) Why is Romeo so depressed when Benvolio meets/talks with him?  Make sure that you are specific (by using details from the text).

2.)On page 25, Romeo tells his cousin that he is essentially a blind person:
"He that is strucken blind cannot forget
The precious treasure of his eyesight lost."

What is the "treasure" that Romeo is referring to? Why does his cousin tell him to "Forget to think of her"?

3.)When Count Paris converses with Capulet (on page 27), what do the following lines refer to:

And, she agreed, within her scope of choice,

3.) At this point in the play, which character is the most powerful: Macbeth, or his wife?  Explain your answer with details (and at least ONE QUOTE) from the text.

L.A. 8 -- Answer the following questions either on looseleaf or typed:

1.) How does the "Charly" from the movie adaptation compare with the one you read in the short story "Flowers for Algernon"?  Is he about the same as you imagined him, or was he different?  If so, in what ways was the actor who portrayed him different than Charly from the story?

2.) What were some key diffences from the adaptation and the short story?

3.) Did these different scenes/characterizations enhance (improve) the story, or detract from it?

L.A. 7 -- Finish reading "T.M.D.G." and answer the following questions:

1.) Compare and contrast Rainsford and General Zaroff.  Be sure to include the ways in which they are similar and different (physically, ideologically, and morally).

2.) In the beginning of the story, Rainsford says that "The world is made up of two classes: hunters and huntees."  Later on, General Zaroff states, "The world is meant for the strong.  The weak were made for our {the strong's} pleasure."

Do you think that Rainsford still thinks that the world is -- or SHOULD be -- composed of simply "hunters and huntees"?  Make sure that you explain your answer with an example from the story.

3.)Does General Zaroff give all of his "quarry" a truly "fair" chance" at playing his "game"?  Why or why not?

4.)If you were to meet both Rainsford and General Zaroff BRIEFLY (before you knew anything about either of them), based on their initial personalities and conversations, which person would be the most friendly? Make sure you explain WHY that person is more personable and friendly.

1.) How does the title of the story relate/connect with Doodle? (think of the symbolism the two share).

2.) Like Amy's mother in "Two Kinds," the narrator of "Ibis" pushes someone both for the person's self-improvement, but also for selfish reasons.  Is the narrator (mostly) a good or bad person?  Explain.

3.) Remember that being a "caul" baby is supposedly a sign of good luck.  Was Doodle a "lucky" person, or one who had good fortune?  Be sure to explain why/why not.  (And consider his upbringing, his surprising accomplishments, as well as his tragic end).

1.)Explain the difference in the relationship that Ponyboy has with each of his brothers.

2.) Characterize/contrast Johnny and Dally. In particular, describe how they appear and act toward others.

3.) At the end of the chapter, Ponyboy says, "I lie to myself all the time."  What do you think he means by this?
