HISTORY DAY UPDATES:
NOV. 5TH: Today in GT classes students received the introductory letter home discussing the PMS plan for History Day. Students also received the chart listing lessons and due dates, as well as the notice for the History Day Parent information Night. I showed my students the Patapsco web site so that they would be aware of it when they need to reference it.
Nov. 13th: Today in GT classes we discussed the theme/topic selection referencing the Choosing a Topic Document. We also discussed primary, secondary and authentic sources. No assignment due.
Nov. 19th: Today in GT classes we discussed setting up a noodle bib account. We discussed creation of a Title Page using the example from the Patapsco History Day site. We also looked at an example of a title page of an 8th grade students. Students were informed of and noted the due date of the "rough draft" version of the title page of Dec. 15th. We discussed developing the main research question using the PMS site and examples on the web page. Students were told that the visual organizer is also due on the 15th of December with only the center of the visual organizer filled in with the Basic/Advanced Question. Students were directed to use media center resources, such as SIRS, to do preliminary research. Preliminary research is just to see if the question "works" and to scratch the surface to see if there is information "out there" on which to do additional research.
December 4th: Today in GT classes we discussed Basic Research Questions and completing the graphic organizer. This is due on December 22nd. We also discussed using Three Across notes format to create notes on notebook paper for the Basic Research Questions. These are due on January 12th. All of this information, as I explained to the students, is available on my web site under "History Day- the Process."
December 11th: Today in GT classes we discussed Advanced Research Questions. I showed examples to the class from the information on the web site. We had two guest speakers (Paige and Kasey) from Ms. Rice's class show us their advanced questions and research on their projects. I went over the Graphic organizer and due date for it and the Advanced questions and due date. I also reviewed the chart which shows the lessons and due dates. I showed classes the High Level Questions and explained that their advanced questions should tie into one of the three categories (comparison, connecting to today, cause and effect).
December 18th: Today in GT classes we discussed Interview Tips and Interview Preparation using the resources available from the web site. Interviewee and title and the interview questions (not the answers) should be handed in on January 26th.
January 29th: Today in GT classes we discussed the upcoming due dates for both the Three-Across notes on Advanced Research and the Typed summary of interview. I mentioned that the due date for both is listed as February 2nd. I will not grade the summary of interview questions, nor will i collect it, since it is dependent upon the interviewee response(s). Few students had received responses from interviewees, so the summary lesson will be done at a later date. Instead, the date serves merely as a reminder and progress check for students to keep up their efforts to obtain an interview and responses to an interview. I encouraged them to send out multiple requests for interviews if they did not hear from a target interviewee after a signifcant lapse in time.
The Three-across notes on advanced research is still due on February 2nd. The same format should be used that was used for the basic questions. Students should create their own charts if necessary, but all work should be typed, not hand-written. The Thesis lessons will be completed this week.
