Expectations Spanish Expectations
¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to Spanish Class!
Materials: •Covered textbook and homework worksheets
•Filler paper (may also use notebook with perforated pages)
•Binder (empty after every unit, save papers at home)- may be used for other classes
•Spanish/English dictionary
•Index cards
•Pens, Pencils, and Colored pencils or markers
Grading: Please note: Your child’s grades may be lower than normal as he/she adjusts to a completely new subject. It is important to keep working regularly and to experiment with different study techniques.
Note: Assessments will be at the end of 2nd and 4th quarter and will count as test grades. 8th Grade Spanish is the second half of level I Spanish. In order to enter level II Spanish (regular or honors) in high school, students must pass Spanish class as well as the 8th grade end of the year assessment.
•The way to get a good participation grade is to speak in Spanish!
•One letter grade will be deducted for every class day that homework is late without a valid excuse.
•Tests and quizzes will be announced in advance and posted on the homework website.
•Grade sheets will be sent home approximately 4 times per quarter and should be signed and returned. The website will update you on when to expect grade sheets.
• Quizzes and speaking tests do not need to be signed.
Behavior & Discipline: Students should come to class focused and ready to learn! Students are expected to be prompt and prepared with all appropriate materials. Cheating hinders academic progress and may result in a zero. Students who do not meet class expectations and ignore warnings may expect lunch detentions, parent contacts or more serious consequences.
How can parents help?
•The homework website is my main method of communicating with you. It is a good idea to check it regularly for information about homework, quizzes, tests, and grade sheets.
•Encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her grades. Remind them that they should inform you of all of their grades, not just test grades and grade sheets, and that it is their job to make up missing work.
•Make sure your child regularly studies for Spanish. Don’t wait until the week of the test! Study time should include grammar (look for the tan box and the word ‘Gramática’ in the textbook) and vocabulary (listed at the end of each chapter). Remember that your child will be taught how to access the textbook online as well.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by telephone at EMMS or e-mail me at Shannon_costello@hcpss.org. Or go directly to: http://www.schoolnotes.com/21043/scostello.html
Study Suggestions:
•Check out the textbook website. •Seek out other Spanish websites.
•Read the grammar ahead of time. •Make up your own grammar true/false questions.
•Make flashcards. •Study with a friend.
•Look up words you don’t know. •Study a little bit at a time- don’t wait until the last minute!
•Complete work promptly. •Study both grammar and vocabulary.
•Watch the Spanish channel. •Listen to Spanish radio (900 AM, for example).
•Look in the children’s audio section of the Howard County libraries for Spanish books
on tape.
•Watch a movie you like- with subtitles and sound set to Spanish!

Reading Logs:
Reading regularly is an invaluable habit that helps students improve their own abilities to work with the English language. Students will be required to read various books throughout the year and will periodically complete in-class assignments based on their individual readings.
Behavior & Discipline: Students should come to class focused and ready to learn! Students are expected to be prompt and prepared with all appropriate materials.
