May is a very busy month in school and this year it has been very busy for me out of school. I apologize for being so late to update this newsletter. My daughter just graduated from Seton Hall University. I am very proud of her (summa cum laude!) and I traveled to New Jersey to see her receive her honors. Here at school there are a lot of special events occurring. Please check out the calendar in Gator Aid. But remember we are still working to learn until June 12th, so the children should keep their studies a top priority. I appreciate your continued support of them by signing the homework pad and helping them to stay on track to do their best work.
ILA – We are reading trade books in literatures circles to develop our reading strategies and understanding of author’s craft. We are writing a variety of writing pieces including nonfiction and personal narratives.
Math – We are completing our unit10 on reflections and symmetry and will then focus on learning about weight, volume, and capacity in unit 11. Remember many of the concepts are not designated as “secure”. This means that we are introducing the concepts to the children but do not expect total mastery at this point.
Social Studies –We are finishing our study of how the Revolutionary War affected Maryland. We will have a test on these concepts on June 3 or 4. We will continue activities after that, but I want to assess understanding at that time. The children will not turn in the whole notebook this time. I will collect papers that I want, to evaluate progress, but we may complete some of the pages after the test. I will let the children know what to study for the test.
In science class the students are now working on the final unit, Physical and Chemical Changes. This unit involves many hands on experiments. They will be practicing good laboratory techniques.
There will not be another newsletter in June. Continue to read the Gatoraid to see important dates in June.
Our room parents are hard at work planning our end of the year celebration. If you have not yet sent your monetary contribution to Mrs. Lukasik for pizza, please do so soon. Thank you.
The children have learned a lot this year. I believe the students will be ready for fifth grade and wish them all success next year.
