*Intergrated Language Arts-
Wow! We have “Set Sail” in first grade. We are on our way to becoming independent, successful, & fluent readers. We continue to use many decoding and comprehending strategies as we read unfamiliar text. We are trying to develop automaticity (recognizing our sight-words instantly). This enables your child to focus on making meaning (which is why we read)! Continue to support your child this summer to better prepare him/her for the demands of second grade! Happy reading!
*Everyday Math-
Unit 9 reviews place value patterns for counting by ones and tens on a number grid. This is preparation for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. The unit also includes comparing fractions and exploring fractional parts as well as equivalent fractions. Unit 10 (our final math unit) will reflect your child’s progress with first grade skills and concepts.
Social Studies & Science
We have begun our animals unit and will continue to observe the growth and change occurring in ladybug land! We will continue to study animals and their habitats, as it ties in nicely with our zoo trip! Our last unit will be solids, liquids and gases.
Writing
This month we will continue to explore various styles of writing! We will participate in an author study featuring Mem Fox!
Self- Selected Reading (SSR)
During SSR we will continue to select books on an appropriate level. Students really enjoy the opportunity to self-select books on topics of interest to them. It is so nice to hear students applying strategies they have learned throughout the year as they read independently. Please continue to read with your child each night!
