SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
Greetings Parents:
Hello everyone and welcome to the fifth grade!  I hope that you had an enjoyable summer, and you were able to get away to some place nice.  The kids have been fantastic these first few days.  I look forward to a very exciting and enjoyable school year.
My expectation for homework is the following!  Each night the children are to work no more then fifty minutes Monday through Thursday evening.  Please keep it to fifty minutes!  I would like to see 15 minutes spent on reading, 5 on their journal, 15 on math, and the remaining 15 split between spelling and studying all subject areas.  I realize that math might require a little extra time because of the new material that we are learning.  On Friday I am asking the children to read and complete a journal.
The journal entry needs to be a paragraph, 5-7 sentences.  Each night they are required to write their paragraph on a different topic.  Please refer to the directions pasted in the front of the journal/marble composition book.  I will assign spelling homework the first night of the week, whether it is Monday or Tuesday.  Your child will then have the entire week to complete their assigned three ditto pages.  I will collect the pages Friday morning.  As for math homework, all assignments will be from the Study Links, the Math Journal is coming home to finish classwork.  The math Student Reference Book/textbook is to come home every night as well.  For that matter your child will be bringing home all materials every night including Friday.
I will ask that your child study over the work completed in class.  I am looking for students to be able to explain what they learned, not memorize what is on the papers.  One suggestion for you at home is to ask your child questions that dig deep.  “How is what you learned going to help you?”  "How is what you learned today related to what you did yesterday or last week?"
The students were assigned an “All About Me” project on the first day of school.  It is due this Friday, September 5th.  Each quarter the students will complete a social studies and a science project.  The first social studies project is on Native Americans and I will assign it on Monday September 8th.

Reading – The students will be reading short stories from their anthology.  These stories will have a variety of themes.  This month the theme is looking inside yourself.  In addition, they will read one chapter books in class.  Each student is also expected to have a self selected chapter book to read during SSR.
Math – The students will work on a unit on number theory.  This will be followed by a unit on estimation and computation.
Science – The students will work on a unit on Astronomy and Weather.  This unit will encompass the entire first quarter.
Social Studies- The students are working on a unit called “Investigation”.  In this unit they will investigate what is social studies, as well as look at the geography of our country.  Finally, we will spend some time on defining rights and privileges.

OTHER BITS
I will send home scholastic order forms every other week, and in fact I will alternate between the book order form and the software order form.  If you would like to order from these flyers please feel free to do so whenever you like.  I would ask that you only send in checks made out to Scholastic.  I would also ask that you send back orders by that Friday!
Our school’s website http://www.hcps.org/YBES/ now has a link to my “school notes” page.  I will have a copy of my newsletter for the current month always on the site.  In addition, I will email a copy as well just as I have done today.  You may send email from www.schoolnotes.com, or Jason.Parks@hcps.org, or call me at school.  Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions or concerns.  If you are receiving a paper copy today that is because I do not have your email address.  Please send it in with your child as soon as possible, so I may add you to the class distribution list.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School where I will be able to explain things in greater detail.

Take care,
Mr. Parks
