I was able to attend two different G/T conferences during the month of April where I explored new resources for our G/T program. It was good to network with other educators from across the state.
Mrs. Myers' JGB class has completed the series and my group is now engaged in reading WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS. This action packed novel takes place during the Great Depression in the backwoods of the Ozark mountains. It lends itself to great discussions! Mrs. Mace's JGB class is completing the JGB series and continues to use the shared inquiry discussion technique which leads to higher level thinking. The 4th Grade JGB classes have also completed the JGB series. My group in Mrs. Crockett's class is reading A LONG WAY FROM CHICAGO and enjoying the eccentric grandma in the novel. Be sure to have your child talk about this book at home!
All flex math groups are continuing with challenging problem solving. Our biggest challenge is to fit in time for all G/T groups with the many extra school activities that happen during the months of May and June!
The students in the special 3rd-5th grade social studies and Renzulli groups all have individual projects to complete by the end of the year. Some students are creating power points, others are researching or investigating a topic and creating visual presentations. Ask your child what specific project he/she is completing. We hope to have a joint 3rd-5th grade presentation in June.
Some of our YBES students will be attending Maryland Summer Centers for enrichment in conservation and sailing on the Bay. I'm looking forward to hearing about their experiences.
We have had a terrific year in the G/T classroom and I look forward to an even better one in 2009-2010. Thank you for all of your interest and support during the year!
