Welcome! My name is Janice Ward and I teach first grade at Youth's Benefit Elementary School.  My mission is to create a positive classroom where children feel free to learn and explore new things. I believe that it is important to encourage and support new learning at all times.  We are off to a great start this year and I am so excited about the months to come.

I hope this website is helpful to you.  I will be updating each month and will put information on it such as, curriculum for the month, important dates, snack schedule, etc.

As always, PLEASE don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you need too. I can be reached by telephone, email, or by sending a note in.  I will get back to you as soon as I can!

        Volume 9 May
Curriculum
ILA:  We are working in our final anthology book for first grade (amazing how quickly time flies, huh?)  We are going to continue focusing on fluency and expression while reading as well as identifying the author’s main idea.  We will continue to practice answering comprehension questions in writing.

MATH:
We are finishing Unit 9 and will test on Friday, May 9, 2008.  Then we will begin our final unit, which will be a basic review of the skills we have learned this year.  For this upcoming math test, please continue to review fractions and how to shade in various parts of a whole.  Also continue to practice counting forwards and backwards starting with any number.  We will count forward and backward by 10s and 1s.

Important Dates
3rd: Spring Bazaar 10:00-2:00
7th: Zoo Field Trip
9th: Math Test for Unit 9
14th: Field Day (Rain date- May 16)
26th: Schools Closed for Memorial Day

Snack Schedule:
5th: Joe Shedleski
12th: Larry Sheets
19th: Nick Sheppard
27th: Jacob Snyder

** Please remember that all snacks are peanut free and that they are individually wrapped (this is definitely NOT a requirement; it is just an easy way to pass out snacks quickly).  Thank you!

Congratulations to Joe Shedleski and Julia Ananth for being the star citizens for the month of April.  Keep up the great work!

May Birthdays:
14th: Megan Grammer

Zoo Field Trip:
Our zoo trip will be on Wednesday May 7, 2008.  Please send in a bagged lunch in which everything can be thrown away! We are really trying to make it easy for the chaperones and would prefer if you sent lunches in paper bags that can be pitched! Also, if possible, please send in two drinks (juice boxes, Capri Suns, plastic water bottles) so that they don’t get too thirsty during the day but the trash can be thrown away.  Thanks for your cooperation!
Chaperones: Please make sure to come and see me when we get to the zoo so that I can give you a packet of information before taking your child/children around.  Thanks!!

Field Day:
Our field day will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 (with a rain date of Friday, May 16).  This year each grade level is going to wear a certain color.  First grades’ color will be YELLOW.  Please get in the spirit by dressing your child in yellow that day. More information will follow as we get closer to that day!
