ILA (Integrated Language Arts)
ILA (Integrated Language Arts)-
As the warm weather approaches, we will begin to think of summer…and second grade. At the end of this month, we will move onto our last anthology-Set Sail and enjoy many adventures from near & far. During the last quarter, we will focus on monitoring comprehension (and choosing strategies that work best for us) and responding to text in writing (including details)! In addition to reading lots of informational text, we will focus on the elements of fiction - (characters, setting, and events) as well as identify character traits and the main idea. We will continue to make inferences as we read and make connections to ourselves, other stories, and to the world around us!
Math-
Math- Unit 8 begins by reviewing money with the addition of the dollar, as well as place value concepts extended to include hundreds. The rest of the unit begins to introduce fractions and fraction notation. Please continue to review basic addition and subtraction facts on a regular basis.
Social Studies/ Science-
Spring is here! We are eager to observe changes in many areas. We will observe changes based on the season. We will see how plants change and grow over time. And, we will observe and record changes in other living things (LADYBUGS!) during our animal homes unit. We will revisit our old friend “Froggy” to learn how to make good choices.
Writing-
We will begin an author’s study of Mem Fox. The best way to get to know her stories is to read them aloud. We will discover the types of books she writes, techniques she uses, and understand how she chooses topics. Ask your child about his/her favorites.
SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)-
SSR- During SSR we will continue to select books on an appropriate level. It is so nice to see students self-selecting both fiction and non-fiction text! As you read with your child at home, continue to ask questions about the text. Have your child identify story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) as well as story events. If reading non-fiction, discuss interesting facts and/or new information learned after reading!
As always, please call or send a note if you have any questions or concerns! You can e-mail me through school notes at katherine.ayres@hcps.org or katie_ayres@msn.com
Thank You to those parents who supplied treats for our treasure box. Your contributions are greatly appreciated!
