ILA (Integrated Language Arts)
We will continue our theme, Welcome Home. The stories we are reading are about those who are special to us- our families, pets, friends, and neighbors. While reading we are using numerous strategies, such as: making and confirming predictions, using picture clues, creating mental images, using word order & context to confirm meaning, making inferences, identifying story elements, character traits, & main idea, as well as determining important ideas.
Math-
We will begin a new unit… geometry! We will introduce 3-D geometric shapes & then locate 2-D figures within the 3-Shapes. We will sort attribute blocks, explore designs and then use pattern block templates to create our own! The children will also explore symmetrical shapes.
Social Studies/ Science-
This month we will finish our economics unit, We Make Choices. Students are investigating economic decisions people make and the impact these decisions have on families, schools and communities. They are using maps and other tools to examine how the environment in which they live affects their daily lives.
Writing-
We will continue to explore the various ways to inform others about various topics. Throughout the unit, the children will also be comparing and contrasting. This can include topics, animals, stories, etc. Please point out when authors compare things in writing while you are reading at home.
SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)-
The children thoroughly enjoy this block of time when they are allowed to read books of choice at their independent level. What does a “just right” book feel like? It feels smooth, it only has a few tricky words, you can retell the story to yourself after reading a few pages, and you can really understand it! Remember, it is OK to put down a book that feels too hard and pick another one. Remember, our main goals include: practicing and building the reading habit; applying reading skills and strategies; and increasing fluency and understanding!
As always, please call or send a note if you have any questions or concerns!I am getting better at checking my e-mail so please feel free to send me a message through school notes, at katherine.ayres@hcps.org or katie_ayres@msn.com
