APRIL 2008

Dear Kindergarten Families:

April Showers bring “Budding First Graders”!!  I can’t believe we are already at the end of the third quarter.  Report cards will be coming home on Friday, April 11th.

We are finishing up our Construction unit and we will begin our Earth/Space unit on April 14th.  In this unit, we will define and explore natural and manmade features.  We will conduct hands-on experiments with land, air, and water.  We will also investigate space and what is beyond our Earth as “astronauts”.  In Math, we are working on features of the dime, exchanging coins, writing number stories, counting by two’s (2’s), skip counting by twos (2’s) using the calculator, dividing groups in half and exploring time.  In ILA (Integrated Language Arts), we are predicting the next event in stories and we continue to check our predictions.  We are working very hard using a story map to put story events in order.

I look forward to seeing all of the shelter projects that are due on Thursday, April 10th for the girls and Friday, April 11th for the boys.  I hope you enjoyed spending time with your child creating the projects.

Don’t forget to save the date of Monday, June 9th for our Kindergarten class picnic.  More details will be out shortly.

Thank you as always to our volunteers.  You help keep our classroom running!!

Thank you for your continued support.

MARCH2008

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Here we are with spring right around the corner.  The end of the school year will be here before we know it!  I am so proud of my Kindergarten Stars beginning to turn into First Grade Super Stars!

We are finishing our Wellness unit and we will begin our Construction unit on March 10th.  In this unit, we will explore magnets, shelters for people and animals, shelters from around the world and learn about blue prints.  We will create shelters out of different materials and the boys and girls will even have a home shelter project.  In math we are working on measuring, using standard measurement tools, graphing, tallying, working with a penny and nickel, exploring attribute blocks and creating a class number grid to 110.  In ILA (Integrated language Arts), we continue to use our “prior knowledge” to predict stories.  We are identifying the problems and solutions in stories as well.  We are looking forward to our Spring Celebration on Thursday, March 20th.  I am also very excited about our “Take a Bite Out of Reading” program.  The children are doing a great job earning their stickers for reading prizes.  KEEP READING!!

Thank you as always to our volunteers.  You help keep our classroom running!!

Thank you for your continued support.

FEBRUARY 2008
Dear Kindergarten Families:

It’s hard to believe that it is already the beginning of February and we are quickly approaching the 100th Day of School!!!  We have a festive and fun filled day planned.

We finished our Winter Unit and we are beginning our Wellness Unit.  In this unit, we will explore ways to keep our bodies healthy by exercising and eating properly.  We will discuss germs and how to keep them away.  During this unit, we will also discuss feelings, ways to relax, our special families and staying safe.  In math, we are working with attribute blocks; measuring with standard and non-standard units; counting by 5’s, identifying next numbers; exploring two digit numbers; and calculator skills.  In ILA (Integrated Language Arts), we will continue to use our “prior knowledge” to predict stories.  We are also writing our predictions and checking them after reading our big books.

We look forward to our upcoming Friendship Day celebration and reading our many valentines.

Thank you as always to our volunteers.  You help keep our classroom running!!

Thank you for your continued support.

We have just begun our “Kid’s Choice” unit where we will learn about being a citizen, the important symbols of our country, the characteristics of a good leader along with how voting creates a fair decision making process.

We will start having classroom volunteers soon.  I will send a calendar home to let you know your scheduled day.  If there are any problems with the scheduled time, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  If you have not already done so, please make sure you attend a YBES Volunteer Training Session.
