                  The Sneaker Speaker: 4th Quarter
                       (April-June 2009)
                         Mrs. Marie Baxivanos

April: Students are learning to become "heart smart" as they participate in a heart healthy unit. Students are learning about how the heart functions and how to keep it healthy through aerobic exercise and proper nutrition.
Students will also discover striking skills. Kindergarten and first grade will explore with dribbling (hand and foot), as well as striking w/ implements (paddle, bat, etc.) Our second graders will learn and master the game of Block Ball. This game is similar to the game of Four Square, a game that many parents may have grown up playing themselves. Our 2nd graders will have a grade level tournament in the spring to determine the "king or queen" of the court.

May: Students will continue with their striking skills into the month of May. In addition we will prepare for our field day, a day of fun and celebration. This year's theme is "Survivors" and will take place on Wednesday, May 20th (rain date Friday, may 22nd)---Mark your calendar! Watch for news in the Gator Aid and letters recruiting parent volunteers.

June: We will conclude the school year with a multicultrual unit. Students will develop an appreciation of other cultures as they explore games form around the world.

Friendly reminder: Be sure that your child has tennis shoes on scheduled PE days (no cut out or mesh sections; the shoe must encompass the entire foot) A water bottle is highly recommended as well, especially since the primary building is not airconditioned.
