Your child is reading "Cocoa Ice" by Diana Applebaum. This story, set in the early 1800's , tells about a trading schooner that enables a community in Maine to trade ice for chocolate with a village on a Caribbean island. You may enjoy discussing this story and doing these activities with your child. Together you can develop and explore your child's language skills.
Life in the Past
Share with your child what you know about daily life and customs of past eras. You may be able to find these books about past eras in your local library:
Giants in the Land by Diana Applebaum
Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall
House, House by Jane Yolen
What Word Is It?
These words are new vocabulary your child has learned while reading "Cocoa Ice"
trading
schooner
harvest
machete
pulp
bargain
support
You might enjoy playing a guessing game with your child to reinforce the meaning of these words.
Connecting Communities Everywhere
In "Cocoa Ice", the tropical delicacy chocolate is shipped to Maine far to the north. You and your child can learn about how your community is connected with communities around the world through trade. Help your child find and read labels on clothing , packaged food, and other products to find out the countries they came from. You might have your child write a list of the products and the countries.

We have started a new unit in social studies called PEOPLE, POWER,AND AUTHORITY.
We have MSA testing this week on Thursday and Friday. Please get lots of rest. We found out that peppermint can help the brain when taking a test or as just a brain pick me up. And we found out that chewing can really help you focus too. So we have peppermint gum that the third graders are going to get to chew for the MSA testing block. The kids are very excited about this. Remember to eat a good breakfast and be hydrated. Bring your water bottle to school.

NEW POST 03.13.08
Your child is reading a play called "The Crowded House," based on a Jewish folktale. The play tells the story of an eleven member family who feel the extremely crowded in a tiny cottage. The local wise man's advice just makes the situation worse. But in the end, the family learns the wisdom of being grateful for what they have. You and your child may have fun sharing this repetitive story and doing the activities that follow. Together you can enrigh your child's language skills.
Stage Stars
Reading to each other is a wonderful way to enjoy a story. For the play, consider dividing the roles and perhaps using different voices for each character. You could even add sound effects.
Find it Fast
While reading this play, your child is learning some important skills that require reading quickly:
- scanning to find specific information
- skimming to find the overall ideas
You can demonstrate the importance of these skills by scanning for things such as a number in the phone book. Ask your child to scan the newspaper for you -to find the times at which a movie is showing or the dates of a sale at a local store. Have your child skim a news story and you the gist of it.
Match Syllables
While reading "The Crowded House", your child has learned some new vocabulary:
- wits
- wailing
- advice
- dreadful
- faring
- farewell
Play a syllable game. Together, write each syllable on a slip of paper. Place the slips face down in a pile and mix them up. Take turns drawing syllables and trying to make a new vocabulary word. To be able to make a word, a player must use the word correctly in a sentence. Otherwise, the last syllable drawn is returned to the pile. when the syllables have all been drawn, players may ask each other for the syllables they need. Play until you make all the words.
THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING NEXT WEEK BECAUSE OF THE SHORT WEEK.
Your child is reading Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. In this story, a grandfather tells a tall tale about a town where the townspeople don't need to buy food because it falls from the sky like rain. You may enjoy discussing this story and doing these activities with your child. Together you can develop and explore your child's language skills.
More Tall Tales
Help your child read and discuss other tall tales. You may be able to find these books in your local library:
- June 29, 1999 by David Wiesner
- Papa Tells a Chita by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard
- Pickles to Pittsburgh by Judi Barrett
Storytelling
The following words are new vocabulary your child has learned while reading Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs:
uneventfully
varied
supplied
portions
abandon
drizzle
damaged
necessities
You may want to reinforce their meanings by helping your child retell the tall tale in "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs," using as many of the words as possible.
Tell a Tall Tale
Help your child create his or her own tall tale with realistic characters and places but impossible and silly events. Here are some ideas to help your child get started: a girl finds a spaceship in her backyard; a boy's puppy never stops eating and growing; in the town of Bigasaurus, people have dinosaurs as pets instead of cats and dogs. Encourage your child to rehearse telling the story aloud and then retell it to other family members or friends.

Dear Parents,
Listed below are the Secure skills that the students will be responsible for in Unit 2. Students are expected to demonstrate understanding of the Secure skills and these are the basis of the unit assessment grade. As always, basic fact review is important.
*The following will help you to prepare for your unit assessment.
*As you work through this study guide, please write any questions down that you have and we will go over them the week of the test.
Outcome | Level | Example/Resources |
Identify and apply the concept of inverse operations to addition and subtraction. | Secure | Write the fact family for 60, 80, and 140. Example: 60 + 80 = 140 80 + 60 = 140 140 – 60 = 80 140 – 80 = 60 Student Reference Book p. 44-45, 48-49 |
Complete a function table using a given addition or subtraction rule. | Secure | Rule: -6
Student Reference Book p. 178-180 |
Solve addition and subtraction word problems. | Secure | Solve number stories. You can use diagrams, pictures, or other things to help you. Lisa read for 30 minutes on Saturday. She read for 47 minutes on Sunday. How many more minutes did she read on Sunday.
Student Reference Book p. 182-190 |
Represent relationships using appropriate relational symbols (<,>, or =) and operational symbols (+,-,x,÷) on either side. | Secure | Solve the above number story. Write a number model for the problem.
Student Reference Book p. 182-190 |
Add whole numbers using a variety of strategies. | Secure | Solve these problems without using a calculator. 67 123 + 40 + 35
216 + 475 + 21 = _____ Student Reference Book p.48-52 |
Subtract whole numbers using a variety of strategies. | Secure | Solve these problems without using a calculator. 94 236 - 51 - 124
Student Reference Book p. 54 |
Represent numeric quantities using operational symbols (+,-,x,÷). | Secure | Madelyn had 58 goldfish crackers. She gave some to her sister. Write an expression to represent the number of goldfish Madelyn has now. Student Reference Book p. 283 |
Find the missing number (unknown) in a number sentence (equation) using operational symbols (+,-,x,÷). | Secure |
+ 46 = 83
What number would go in the box to make the number sentence correct?
|
Demonstrate proficiency with addition and subtraction basic facts. | Secure | Students will be given timed test of basic addition and subtraction facts. Focus on doubles +1, doubles +2, doubles, doubles -1, and doubles -2 Student Reference Book p. 44-45,48-49 |
Identify alternative ways to solve a problem. | Secure | Demonstrate and explain 2 different strategies to solve a problem. Strategies such as using base 10 blocks, empty number line, breaking up the problem, trade first, or thinking money could be demonstrated. Student Reference Book p. 6-11, 52,54 |
The following skills are beginning/developing skills. They will be on the assessment but will NOT count toward your child’s grade.
· Make and test generalizations.
Example: Knowing fact families, use extended fact families to solve other problems. So, 2 + 3 = 5. Then, 20 + 30 = 50.
· Determine the reasonableness of sums and differences.
Example: Given an addition or subtraction problem, make a ballpark estimate as to what the sum or
difference may be.
Student Reference Book p. 166-167
· Support or refute mathematical statements of solutions.
Explain why an answer is correct using words and/or numbers in the explanation.

I hope you enjoy your early dismissal day and your day off tomorrow. Parents, please remember to sign your child's homework pad and write down the book they are reading for the15 minutes of reading each night. It would be a good time to review some of the math homework assignments you have completed to this point as a help for the test as it approaches. Continue to work on the speed drills that have come home and be watching for a review sheet that is coming home before the test as well.

Welcome to third grade. I am Mrs. Brown and I am looking forward to a happy and productive school year. You may get in touch with me any time you have questions. If you email me from this site I will get that on my school email which I check daily during the week. If you use my contact information from the newsletter from the beginning of the school year you can call and leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Some important reminders: *remember to bring a snack each day. *you will always need a chapter book to read. *dress for the weather. *you will want to have a sweatshirt in your backpacks...it gets very cold . *we will be having a reading incentive program where the students can win a free book...monthly *class newsletters will contain important information about tests and due dates. *please sign homework pads each night.
THE FOLLOWING IS A TEXT ONLY COPY OF MY NEWSLETTER THAT WENT HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S GATOR FOLDER.
I am so excited to welcome you to third grade. I am Mrs. Brown and I am looking forward to working with you and your child this school year. In this newsletter you can expect to find out some valuable information to make things easier for you this year. I will explain policies, procedures, and routines. You will discover upcoming important events and good news that we need to share. Your child received a gator folder on sneak a peek night. That folder will be your child’s take home folder. Inside the folder you will find that the left hand side is the leave at home side and the right side is the return to school side. The cafeteria envelope is there for your convenience if you would like to send money in for your child’s account. It might even be a good idea to send in a little money for that account even if your child does not normally buy lunch. This usually reduces some of the stress caused when they realize they have not remembered their lunch. You will also find several book club order forms. This is a service that I will provide for you that will enable you to find books on your child’s level. If you are interested in ordering a book you need to fill out the order form and send payment in the form of a check made out to Scholastic. You can make one check no matter how many of the forms you fill out. There is also three emergency cards in your folder. Each child is required to turn in three separate emergency cards. Additional school supplies unique to Mrs. Brown’s room: -3 Marble composition books. -one box quart ziplock bags. -one box sandwich ziplock bags Our lunch time is 12:54-1:24. Because it is a little later than most children are used to we have a snack each day mid-morning. The snack needs to be something that doesn't take a lot of preparation. For example, puddings, jello and fruit cups are hard to maneuver while you are working. Something like pretzels, or cut up fruit, or goldfish are a good choice. Please remind your children to bring a chapter book that they are interested in to read on the first day of school.
