Thursday, May 8:
Write a persuasive essay responding to the question:
Could "The Dog of Pompeii" have taken place in a different setting?

Paragraph 1: Restate the question in your own words and state your opinion.

Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4: At least three supporting paragraphs. Support your opinion with evidence from the story and/or with facts you have researched.

Last paragraph: Conclusion. Restate your thesis statement.

Due on Wednesday, May 14: 1) Final typed copy of essay, 2) rough draft, 3) revisons of rough draft, and 4) the four questions from "The Dog of Pompeii".




Memorize all of these prepositions! Test on Friday.

aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, by, down, during, except, for, from, in, into, like, of, off, on, over, past, since, through, throughout, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, without.

Also on Friday's test: definition of prepositional phrase, definition of the object of the preposition, when "prepositions" are really adverbs and drills 26-35.

Monday, May 5:
Final draft of "My Most Amazing Relative" due Tuesday, 5/6. You will hand in your interview questions, interview notes, rough draft, peer questions along with your final typed copy. Revision must have been made on the rough draft to create an improved piece of writing (Revision is NOT just correcting for CUPS errors!!) Follow the style manual for typing your work but you may add photos or graphics that illustrate your article.
The peer questions that we did in class on Friday were:
  1. What do you remember best about my description?
  2. What doersd my description make you think and feel?
  3. What details came across most clearly?  Least Clearly?
  4. What else would you like to know about my subject?


Wednesday, April 30:
Write rough draft of "My Most Amazing Relative" article.
  • Describe your relative--physical appearance and personality

  • Describe what is most amazing about your relative

  • Describe how you feel about your relative

  • Use specific details, similes, and metaphors

Ask Yourself:

What is the main impression of my relative that I want to make?

       Have I supported this impression with details?

What matters most to me about my subject?

      Have I gotten this across?

Do my thoughts and feelings about my relative show?



Tuesday, April 29:
Make sure you have your INTERVIEW NOTES with you in class on Wednesday!!!! If you do not have your interview done, you will also get behind on writing the rough draft tomorrow and soon your whole project will be late! This is a bad path to wander down.

Complete "Double Nickel Stories" with a well-written 55-word summary of "Aaron's Gift". If your worksheet has been misplaced, this assignment can be done on notebook paper or on the computer. Number your words by 5s to make sure there are precisely, exactly 55 words.

Wednesday, April 23:
*Interview your "Most Amazing Relative Over Thirty". Collect enough information from your amazing relative that you can write an article explaining how they are so amazing. You will begin writing the article in class on Tuesday, 4/29.

*Memorize the prepositions on The Preposition Song paper. You will be tested on being able to write this list on Friday, 5/9.



Monday, April 21:
Complete "Combining Sentences"
Retype or rewrite your Kenyan penpal letter as needed.


Thursday, April 17:
Period 6 ONLY: List five quest stories (books or movies) that use the quest motif. A quest story involves the undertaking of a journey where the heroines or heroes perform difficult or impossible tasks and overcome insurmountable obstacles to achieve their ultimate goal.
