Welcome 6th graders 2008-2009

We are experiencing a problem with parent contact being pulled into the spam file.  If you are having trouble contacting me through srosskopf@aacps.org then try to contact me through schoolnotes.com
Review of basic info to know:
Students should have a separate plastic Language Arts folder with six sections.  The price is four dollars.  As your sixth graders are new to the school please take the time to send in the money as soon as it is convenient. Student homework and classwork are kept in this folder. If you prefer a homework folder for your child or your student is in the AVID program please remind your child to take the Language Arts plastic folder out of his/her locker and take it to Language Arts class.  At times students tell me that their folders are sitting at home as well as their agenda books.  Please check the Language Arts folder nightly as well as the agenda book, especially Friday evenings so there are no surprise assignments to complete on Sunday evenings. If you are sending a message to me through the agenda book it is the student's responsibility to show me the message.
When students are not using a computer for classwork or homework they must use black ink, dark blue ink, or regular #2 pencils for any work. Erasable pens are the best bet.
Students should have four sections in their take home folder.  Students have reading homework every night.  The advanced students will read the novel HOMECOMING in the last few weeks of the first marking period.  All students will work on writing a personal narrative about an important or memorable occasion around the middle of first quarter.Monitored reading occurs in the class four to five days per week.
The Four Sections for the Plastic sectional Language Arts binder:
Classwork
Word Development
Writing
Graded Papers
Completed homework papers will be filed in the appropriate folder section upon completion.
Please do not clean out papers in the Language Arts folder based on date.  Some of the assignments and reference papers are used throughout the year.
Students also have a class folder that stays in the room for their self-selected silent reading assignments.  A county required work folder will also be kept in the room for graded work for the student centered conference in November.  Back to School night is is September 10.
Homework is due every Monday unless there is a holiday.  In that case the homework is due the next school day. General homework assignments are (1)reading nightly for a minimum of 15 minutes  using the  homework sheet to record reading material according to the directions.Students are required to complete their homework reading logs on holidays as well as make up their homework time if they are sick.Parents are to review and sign off on the homework as part of the home reading assignment.
The second homework is word development. The students should have a word development practice sheet at least once a week. Some word development sheets may have dictionary work. The home dictionary should have the parts of speech and the root meaning and derivative as part of the definition. A thesaurus should also be part of the tools the student has handy for studying at home.  There will be a word development assessment weekly.Of course there will be other homework assignments including written work from the Interactive Reader.
All classes !
Parents and students.  Please read the MYP Language Arts syllabus provided for you at the beginning of the school year.  It is very important that the students understand the MYP terminology and  rationale behind the big question for each unit. Students should read a minimum of 15 minutes each evening.  Parents should review student reading material.  All homework should be completed in black ink, dark blue ink, or regular #2 pencil.  Work should not be completed in marker, crayon, highlighter, gel pen, metallic ink, or color pencils. It is against school policy to bring permanent markers to school.  Homework should be filled in for each day of the week including holidays and sick days unless student is sick and out of school for more than a week. Parents are to sign for each day.
Students are encouraged to make arrangements with me ahead of time to make up missing or incomplete work on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 coming in through the front ofice door at the front of the building on Patriot Lane- the designated make-up day at OMMN.  Work cannot be redone or made up at lunchtime.***PLEASE REMEMBER ---Making up work that has missed for any reason is the student's responsibility. Be sure to speak with your teachers to arrange for make up times.  Check with your teachers for any work you may have missed.
Parents, please check your child's agenda book each night.  If you have any questions please write a note in the agenda book, contact me thru www.schoolnotes.com
and fill in the zipcode 21108, call the school and leave a message with the secretaries at 410-969-5950 or srosskopf@aaacps.org.  Please remember to mention your child's first and last name in your correspondence as well as your own.
Wishing all of you a great school year!
Thank you
Ms. Rosskopf
