Parents: The newsletter is being printed and should be in the mail by the end of this week.  Also, we congratulate Mr. Thompson and the Science Bowl Team that won first place at the fifth annual Johns Hopkis University Science Bowl last Saturday.

                              May/June 2008 PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS

                                            “Year of the Fox XI"

Our School’s Vision: Create a positive teaching, learning, and technology oriented instructional environment with active and engaging lessons that will help prepare students for their transition to high school as well as to be successful on Maryland State Assessments.

Our Staff’s Values and Principles: All students can learn through cooperative learning strategies and authentic lessons that tap prior student knowledge and reward them for effort based ability and use of extra time to master instruction.

Our School’s Mission: George Fox Middle School’s students will be prepared for the twenty-first century with the mindtools and technological skills needed to be successful and productive citizens and with the attitude of being lifelong learners.

We have completed MSA Reading, Math, and Science testing for this school year and will finish up with HSA for our seventh and eighth graders taking Algebra on Thursday May 22nd.  Spanish I and French I testing begins on Tuesday, May 27th.  In addition, eighth graders will be taking exams at the end of the marking period to model the tests that they will take in high school.

With report cards, a special flyer was sent home asking parents to complete a racial and ethnic classification for their child to meet new federal and state laws.  If you did not do this for your child, you can find the form on the AACPS website: www.aacps.org.

The GFMS PTO/CAC will hold their preliminary meeting at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 20th in the main office area before we welcome our incoming sixth graders in the Student Activity Center.  We would like to thank everyone who stopped by Paison’s Italian Restaurant on Wednesday, April 23rd for our most recent fundraiser. Please consider joining us Thursday night, May 22nd at 6:00 PM to hear our Choral Spring Concert and at 7:00 PM to hear the Band, Strings, and Orchestra.

The Science Department is hosting their annual Science Olympics and we are looking for volunteers for Thursday and or Friday, May 15th and 16th.  Volunteers will help with one of the Olympic Tasks that students sign up to compete in outdoor activities.  Please consider helping out by calling the school and asking for or leave a message for Mrs. Cindy Russell.

A special thanks to Mrs. Davidson for doing a super job hosting the second annual Fox Idol Program with the final event held on Thursday night, April 24th.

Congratulations to Karen Muir, one of our eighth grade teachers for being elected to the Board of National Council of Social Studies.

Mrs. McCallister and some eighth grade students are participating in an online book club with the AACPS Office of Gifted and Talented.  They are the first in our county to participate in this program.

We have a small grant with Walmart and we have been randomly awarding students with perfect attendance a $10.00 gift certificate. GFMS staff will be choosing more winners throughout the year.

Congratulations to Mr. John Lovelady for being recognized by the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce for his valuable work with the GFMS Music Department and his work with the community.

Congratulations to Mr. Paul Metrinko, our Social Studies Department Chair, who will retire this June after teaching 38 years in Anne Arundel County with almost all those years at George Fox Middle School.  He started teaching elementary school in Annapolis before he found his way to GFMS and has taught all three middle school social studies grade levels ending his career as a United States History teacher.

Please remember that we offer breakfast each morning for a nominal cost of only a $1.00.  Those qualifying for free and reduced meals can also take advantage of the breakfast program.  The reduced price of breakfast is $.30. Students can enter the cafeteria at 7:30 AM each morning to eat a nutritious breakfast and get a head start on their school day.  A nutritious breakfast is important for a good start to each day.  Lunch prices are $2.00 and reduced lunch prices are $.40.  Applications for Reduced and Free Meals were provided to students the first week of school.

Yes, we are still looking for substitutes for this year and additional volunteers as well.  Please call the school and talk to an administrator if you are interested in substituting or being a volunteer at George Fox Middle School.  For those wanting to substitute you must first be fingerprinted and attend a county wide orientation at the BOE.

The SGA is looking for 6th and 7th grader parents to chaperone the 8th grade dance on Friday, June 6 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  They can contact Terrie Smith or Mrs. Reigrut if they are able to help.

Check out the latest information about GFMS and AACPS on our website: www.aacps.org.  Check out the latest on www.schoolnotes.com to see which staff have information to share with you.  You can get the cover page of the newsletter a week before it is mailed by clicking on my name and asking for updates.   We also would like to share a gifted and talented website to keep you informed of other curricular activities in and around our county.  You can access it through the county website at http://www.aacps.org/aacps/boe/instr/CURR/tag/gt/next/calendar.html.
