Parents and students are invited to the April 20th meeting to view a screening of the independent film documentary "Pip and Zastrow: An American Friendship" by Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes. Pip Moyer and Zastrow Simms grew up in Annapolis in the 1940’s. As high school students in their segregated schools, against odds, they became fast friends despite the prevailing attitude of racism at the time. By 1968, Pip Moyer had been elected mayor of Annapolis and Zastrow Simms had traveled another path and was in jail. The assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. resulted in riots across the country. Annapolis could have been completely destroyed by riots were it not for the courage of and trust between these two men who came together in the streets of Annapolis and saved the city. Their friendship has endured over 60 years.
You can catch the trailer at http://www.pipandzastrow.com/trailer.htm as well as further information and links about the film. The film is not long—only about 70 minutes.
We are hoping that those who come to the April 20th viewing will gain a true perspective of the heritage that is Annapolis and an appreciation for the legacy given to us all by Pip Moyer and Zastrow Simms.
