It's so great to be back at ICS. Although I have enjoyed the time at home with my new baby girl, it is wonderful to once again be in the classroom with such musically enthusiastic students.
Congratulations to the 5th grade class for giving such wonderful Mr. Gump performances. Every group worked together to put on their own performance of the Mr. Gump chant with a steady beat and instruments. Great audiating class!
4th grade just finished "Paddy Works on the Railroad." Students sang the song, danced, and played three different ostinatos on the drums, tone block and triangle. They found out how difficult it is to sing and dance at the same time!
3rd grade constantly amazes me with their beautiful voices. They can sing a 3 part round, which is above and beyond the expectation of a 3rd grade.
2nd grades favorite activity is "My mother, your mother," where students echo a four beat pattern on the drum. Eventually, some students will be asked to provide their own four beat pattern (their own response) to my four beat question.
Kindergarten and 1st grade are becoming acculturated to a variety of tonalities and meters through teacher performed and recorded music. Students are exposed to different movement types (direct, indirect, slow, fast, etc.) and are focusing on keeping a steady macrobeat (big beat) and microbeat (little beat). Ask them about "Engine, Engine #9" and "Soup for Lunch."
To all classes: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! :)
