TO ALL ICS PARENTS, GUARDIANS, & FRIENDS:

As some of you may know, Ms. Boyle and I, along with Mr. John Gonzalez, are assuming coaching duties for the ICS Robotics team, the BatMOEbiles. The challenge for 2009-2010 involves efficient, safe, and innovative transportation of people, goods, and services. I would like the team to meet with representatives from companies/agencies involved in transportation in order to give them some background information. If you work for a company involved in transportation or have a contact in any transportation-oriented company or agency,I would appreciate hearing from you! As always, thank you for your support and assistance. Mrs. K.

TO IN-COMING FIFTH GRADERS & PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

Information about the summer reading program was distributed to the students on Monday, 6/1. Have fun choosing a book and creating your scrapbook! The directions for the scrapbook and the supply list for the 2009-2010 school year follow these notes. Please note that I have your students' composition books in the 5th grade room. There seems to be a sufficient supply with which to begin the year, so that is one less thing that you have to worry about when you purchase supplies!  Mrs. Strengari and I would ask, however, that you purchase one new composition book for Reading. Any new students will, of course, have to purchase the composition books lised on the supply list.

Dear Parents/Guardians of rising 6th graders:

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of our school year. Thank you for another great year with your very special students. I will miss them next year, but look forward to hearing great things about them as they progress through Middle School!

Students brought their composition books home. In an effort to reuse, reduce and recycle, we are encouraging students to use composition books from the previous year before purchasing new composition books.  When you check the middle school supply list for next year, please keep in mind that your student should have several tablets with paper left in them that will be fine to use for their summer Current Events and/or the start of 6th grade.

The 5th grade students have received information about their summer reading requirements and next year's Science Fair. Mrs. Pochwat visited our classroom to distribute information about extra credit Social Studies work that the students may want to do over the summer. She spent 45 minutes with your students explaining her expectations for Current Events. The hand-out that she provided explains how your student will do Current Events in middle school (much simpler -just a 2-3 sentence summary, although it must be done every day.)

Students in both Math groups received a summer math packet. This small packet must be completed during the summer and returned on the first or second day of school (August 31st or Sept. 1st). The packet will be graded and will count as a test grade. Any packet returned after September 1st will receive a grade of 0. Also, it is your student's responsibility to keep the packet in a safe place. If it is lost or damaged, the student must copy the problems from a classmate. It will not be possible to get an additional copy of the packet.

Have a prayerful, peaceful, playful summer vacation. Please know that you and your students will be in my prayers daily.

Mrs. K.

5th Grade Supply List – 2009-2010

4 tennis balls with a 3-inch slit cut into each (for  desk legs – our chairs will be updated with permanent scuff guards, so we only need them for the desks). Please make sure that you have your parents/guardians cut the tennis balls before you bring them to school. It is much easier for each of you to cut 4 tennis balls than for me to cut 100! An Exacto knife works well for this. Any uncut tennis balls will be sent back home with you as your parents’/guardians’ first homework assignment of the new year!  We really appreciate your assistance with keeping our new floors shiny and beautiful!
Wide-ruled loose-leaf paper (supply for class and at-home)
12-inch ruler with inch & metric markings

Zippered pencil case (NO boxes)
4 folders with bottom pockets (NO 3-ringed binders)
1 bound, marble composition notebook for Reading. (Required for all students) (Students new to ICS should bring 6 bound composition books.) I have your tablets from 4th grade in the 5th grade classroom. We will use these first and replace when/if needed.  You will be given a homework planner on the first day of school.
Graph paper – centimeter grid
Clear contact paper to cover practice books. You will also need Book Sox and/or another type of book cover to cover 5 large textbooks. (Keep these supplies at home – books will be sent home for covering during the first week of school.) Textbooks must be covered at all times. Thanks!

Summer Reading Project - 2009-2010

Each student is required to read at least two books from the list of suggested titles that students were given in June.(You can review the list on the ICS website.) You must complete a Scrapbook Book Report for one of the books from this list and a Book Recommendation Form for the other. The guidelines for the Scrapbook are listed below:

Scrapbook Book Report

Task:  Create a scrapbook as though it were put together by the main character of your book. Be creative!
Materials:  You may use construction paper, foam, yarn/string (for binding), markers, colored pencils, etc………the possibilities are endless.
Requirements:
Scrapbook Cover:  The cover should include the main character’s name, the title of the book, the author’s name, and your name.  Design and illustrate the cover so that it is a reflection of the character who created it.
Journal Entry:  Write a journal entry from the main character’s point of view that introduces the main characters, describes the setting of the book, summarizes the main events and problems, and relates how the problems are resolved.  The journal entry must be written in paragraph form. Please write or type the journal entry on a sheet of paper and then staple, glue, or tape it into the scrapbook Include a date that reflects the “date” the character wrote the entry.  You may do more than one Journal Entry to cover all of these areas should you choose.
Pictures and photographs:  Include at least three pictures or photographs in your scrapbook.  They may be hand-drawn or cut out of magazines and should illustrate each of the following:  l. the main character in a scene from the book; 2. the setting of the story; 3. an incident or event of your choice.
Souvenirs and mementos:  Draw, create, collect, or find at least two souvenirs that the main character would put into the scrapbook.  These objects should reflect major events in the story and/or important aspects of the character’s personality.  Write two or three sentences next to each object describing its significance.

Book Recommendation:

List the title and author of your book. Complete this sentence: You should read this book because……….; write a brief description of your favorite part of the book.

Happy reading!
