I hope that you had a wonderful, relaxing Thanksgiving vacation. Please continue to pray for Steve Shine as he recovers from heart surgery.
We will begin the season of Advent by participating in the sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, 12/1, at 10:00 a.m.. Our school community will observe Advent by participating in a Blessing of the Hours each day. We will say a short prayer at the beginning of each hour throughout the school day. This will help keep us all focused on the true meaning of this season - preparing for the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
The students will be writing a How-to article in class and will be asked to present a How-to talk on their topic during the week of 12/15. I would ask that you discuss the selection of the topic with your student. The students have been asked to select something that they know how to do well and that they are excited to write about. The topic can't be too broad, but must be narrowed down so that it can be explained in writing. (For instance, "swimming" would be too broad a topic, while "how to do the butterfly" would be appropriate.) Each student must give me a list of several (at least 3) possible topics by Wednesday, 12/3. After I review the lists, I will let the student know which topic he/she can present. (I want to avoid repetition of topics.) Each student will be asked to provide a visual aid for their How-to talk. Some examples are a poster showing the steps of their topic and/or items used for a demonstration. Several students have asked about bringing in a dog or cat for their talk. We are not able to accomodate this request because of student allergies. Stuffed animals and/or a poster work well in place of the real thing! Please refer to pages 66-69 in the "Voyages in English" textbook for tips on helping your student prepare for his/her How-to Talk. I am sure that we will all enjoy learning how to do 29 different things!
