All students have begun a new reading log and project due Feb. 17th .  All grades are reading a historical fiction book. 6th and 7th grade projects are focused on theme, while the 8th grade projects are focused on setting and mood  Students should have brought home a project requirements packet,  containing information on the project and the log.  The signature page of the project should have been signed and returned to me.

The dates of the Unit 3 assessments are as follows:
6th- January 28th and 29th
7th- TBA
8th- February 4th and 5th

Students will receive a copy of a checklist and a study guide to help them to prepare for the test.

All grades will be taking the Unit 2 assessment this week. 6th and 8th grade students will be taking the test on Wed. and Thurs., and 7th grade students will be taking their assessments on Thurs. and Friday.  Students for all classes have received study guides and a checklist of concepts to study for the test. Students should also refer to their notes for help studying for the test.  A list of concepts are also listed below for each grade.

-Parents and Students- please read over the grading criteria and information guide for this Language Arts class. Parents and students should both sign the last page of the packet and return to me by Tuesday 9/1/09
-Students should also have all supplies for this class purchased by Tuesday 9/1/09

9/8/09-Homework/Long Term At-Home Project
Genre Reading Project
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Due Date: October 21st 2009
Date Assigned: 9/8/09

1.    At home, you are to read 400 minutes of a book that is classified as Realistic Fiction.  Using the reading log given in class, you are to record the date, minutes, and a one-sentence summary for every 20 minutes you read.  You should have a total of 20 entries on the reading log, minimum. At the end of the month you should record your total number of minutes on the section designated on your reading log. You must also have a parent/guardian signature before turning in the log.
Suggestion: Read 20 minutes 4 times per week.

2.    You are to create a project addressing the following literary elements for your book: plot, conflict, resolution, setting, and characters. You may do so either in the form of a two- page book report or a collage (on a poster board) that display these elements. You must have captions explaining how the items are addressed on your collage.  

*Students have been to the library to choose a book for this project.
*Help with the project is offered either during lunch or after-school. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange a time either during lunch or after-school.
*Log and projects will NOT be accepted after 10/21/09.  If you are absent on that date, you must turn it in on the DAY YOU RETURN.

9/9/09
6th grade students
Read over the yellow pamphlet with the rules and expectations for the library. Have a parent/guardian sign this pamphlet and return to me by the end of the week.

10/19/09
6th Grade Students- Study for Unit 1 test on  Thurs 10/22 and Fri 10/23. Use the study guides on grammar, vocabulary, and literary concepts we will be completing on 10/20 and 10/21 to help you. An after-school study session will be offered from 2:35-4:00 on Tues. Oct. 20th.

7th Grade Students- Study for Unit 1 test on  Wed 10/21 and Thurs 10/22. Use the study guide for grammar, vocab, and literary concepts that we have completed in class to help you. An after-school study session will be offered from 2:35-4:00 on Tues. Oct. 20th.

All Classes- Students will be attending a book fair at the school library on Wed. Oct. 28 to purchase books if they would like. It is a cash and carry so students will buy and take books home on the same day.

A reminder that reading logs and projects for the realistic fiction genre are due on Wed. Oct. 21st as mentioned above.  Last chance, ,  to receive help,as it has been offered to several times this weekis after-school Tues. Oct. 20th. Students must have note stating a permission to stay.
