6th grade

Today (11/12) in class, we began using the computer to create a comic strip to complete a writing prompt which is designed to have students demonstrate their understanding of the use of dialogue to reveal character.  We will continue with this project tomorrow and hopefully complete it. (Some students opted to do a traditional dialogue in paragraph form.  They too are using the computer to complete this.)

The next book report is due Monday 11/26.

8th grade
Today’s Date:  Monday, November 12, 2007
Learning Target: Analyze & evaluate how specific language choices contribute to meaning & create style
Objective: Make inference to increase understanding while reading
Question Of the Day: How does making inferences increase your understanding of a story?
Warm Up: SSR

Homework:  Read a novel of your choice for 20 minutes.  Next Book report due Mon. 11/26.

FYI:  The book Fair has been canceled for the week - no word on when it will be rescheduled.

If you go to Red Robin tonight, CHMS will get 15%.  Need to have blue coupon kids got in school.

8th grade
Today’s Date:  Thursday, October 25, 2007
Learning Target: Analyze & evaluate how specific language choices contribute to meaning & create style
Objective: Examine setting in a short story
Question Of the Day:  In “A M. in M.” Which season in the Carolina mountains can you visualize the best?
Warm Up: Journal: Do you know or have you read about a person with integrity? How is this person similar to Jerry? Write your own definition of integrity.
Agenda:
1.  Copy usual warm-up / homework
2. Journal
3. “Mother in Mannville” test

Homework:  Read a novel of your choice for 20 minutes.  Next Book report due Mon. 10/29. Quiz on Verb Tense Mon.

6th grade
Today’s Date:  Thursday, October 25, 2007
Learning Target: Determine and analyze important ideas and messages in informational text /media
Objective: Understand and apply rules for using commas in sentences
Question Of the Day:  Make a prediction for the story “Nadia the Willful”?
Warm Up: Journal: Recall the loss of a pet or loved one.  Explain how this loss might be a challenge.
Agenda:
1.  Copy usual warm-up / homework
2.  Journal
3.  Preview “Nadia the Willful”

Homework:  Read a novel of your choice for 20 minutes.  Next Book Report (Character BCR) due Mon. 10/29.



10/23/07 We spent l ast week in the computer lab working on character presentations.

8th grade:  Block 5 visiting book fair Tomorrow & Block 1 visiting Book Fair Friday - so bring money if you plan to make any purchases.

6th grade:  Visiting Book Fair Thursday so bring money if you plan on making any purchases.

Homework:  Read a novel of your choice for 20 minutes.  Next Book Report (Character BCR) due Mon. 10/29.  Finish Campfire BCR (do not spend more than 10 minutes).



10/5/07

Hello parents, it was so nice to see so many of you last night.  

This week in 6th grade, we finished up with "My Friend Flicka" early in the week.  We took the county benchmark Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday.  We also did some work with comparisons.  Don't forget, a book report is due Monday 10/8.  Next week, Mrs. Bifferato will be coming to class to conference with students.  We will also be doing some informational reading, highlighting, & outlining.

This week in 8th grade, we worked on our author study project (which is due Monday 10/8.)  We finished with "The Ransom of Red Chief" & began "The Ballad of the Harp Weaver."  This is a Ballad / Narrative poem which contains many sound devices.  We will be reading it aloud next week & taking a test on it (after we take the county benchmark Monday & Tuesday.)

8th grade:

Test tomorrow (9/20) on:
- "The Lady or the Tiger"
- plot diagram
- surprise endings
- drawing conclusions
- Prepositional phrases
- reading strategies

Book Report due Monday 9/24

Book order due Friday 9/28
