MP 3 Week 6
Homework for this week.
There will be no letter to parents and students this week. We are still experiencing a paper shortage. This is the homework for this week:

Homework this week is to read four times this week for at least twenty minutes, log the reading, and then write two paragraphs using the sentence starters to develop paragraphs about what you have read. Use examples from the story to help explain why you finished each topic sentence the way you have chosen. I will collect the reading responses and check your reading logs on Friday.
This week there will be no spelling and vocabulary words, because we will be doing a research project in the library all week.

Homework Packet MP3 Week 5

Dear Parents and Students,
I hope that everyone had a nice restful long weekend. I tried to get all the grades online that I had with me. I will collect the reading folders and give students a test. I will then be able to grade the “Too Soon A Woman” paper, and also the “Dog of Pompeii” chart. Right now they both will have NG in the grading column. When you see NG this means that there has not been a grade entered (no grade) for that assignment.
In my effort to save paper, I am afraid that I confused some students and parents. Last week I only gave them reading homework (Reading, logging the reading, and writing two paragraphs using the sentence starters on the green sheet.) There were no vocabulary words, because the students were collecting their own vocabulary from the survival books they have been reading. Most everyone has completed the books. I sent a few home for students to finish and complete the reading strategies in their folders. All reading should have been completed by Tuesday, when we go back to school.
I have many students that have just decided to not complete homework, so I am sending a note that must be signed by parents, letting you know what work I have missing so far. This is to put you on notice that homework is not being completed, and there may be missing class work as well. I want everyone to get all their work done, so they have the best shot at improving grades.
The weather was so nice yesterday afternoon. It felt a little like spring. That certainly prompted a few windows getting washed at my house!  I definitely opened up the windows. Good thing I remembered to close them before we left to shop, or my bed would have gotten wet. I am thankful for the rain too! We need the rain to insure our gardens that will be soon appearing. I will see if my crocus bulbs have the chance to bloom this year? It is always a race to see if they bloom or the deer eat them first.
This week the homework will be simple. There will be the normal reading assignment, and I have the words with con and com prefixes as spelling and vocabulary words. There will be the same kind of test we had last time. I will give 10 words, then students will place the number in front of the pre-printed vocabulary meanings. This seems to work out best.

I look forward to lots of new learning experiences!

                            Sincerely,
                            Mrs. Curtis

Reading Homework – Read four times for 20 minutes or more logging each session onto the reading log. Head a sheet of paper with the information about the book, such as: title, author, number of pages in the book, and where you started and stopped.  Choose a sentence starter and complete the sentence. Develop your paragraph using examples from the story to explain why you chose the topic sentence.
Each paragraph must have at least five sentences.

This week’s words use the prefix con or com, these are used in front of root words to give the sense of with or together. Before letters like b, m and p, the form is com. Before the letter r , the form is cor, and before the letter l, the form is cor. This prefix can also appear as co- as in coexistence. This week we will only concentrate on con and com forms.
Please write these spelling words at least three times, or until you know them.
Vocabulary and Spelling -

2. complexion    7. competition
3. consider    8. command
4. connection    9. communicate

Using the spelling and vocabulary words from the word bank above, please make up your own story that incorporates at least six of these words using them correctly. If you want a challenge, try to use them all!

Homework for MP3 Week 2
I did not complete a weekly letter this week. We are having a paper crunch at school, and I wanted to save paper as much as possible, especially since we did not have vocabulary words to work on this week.
This week we will begin our Survival Themed Reader's Workshop. We will not have vocabulary quizzes until this unit is finished. Students will have individual lists of vocabulary words from their chosen books.
The homework this week is to read for one hour and 20 minutes, then log the reading onto thier reading log. Choose two sentence starters from the list of sentence starters, complete each sentence, and these are the topic sentences for each of your two paragraphs. Please develop each of the paragraphs, giving examples from the story to explain how you finished each sentence. Students will be asked to bring home and complete work that they have not finished in class as homework.

Monday night they are to have the reader's workshop behavior contract signed by parents and back by Tuesday. Any student not already finished with the graphic organizer for "Dog of Pompeii" must take it home and complete it for Tuesday's class.

Tuesday night they are to complete Narrative Writing books and have them back Thursday. All will be taken home for grading by Friday.

Homework for MP3 week 1

Homework Packet for MP 2 week 10

Dear Parents and Students,

We are at the end of the second marking period. This quarter has moved along much too fast, and I hope that your student is learning and growing daily in his or her ability to read and write confidently. We have finished Narrative writing and just begun a reading workshop with the theme of survival. We will follow this with the Poetry Unit, which is fun for all the students, even the ones who are certain they will hate it!
This week is the last week for students to finish their four chapter books for this marking period. I will check the book count on Thursday, January 17th of this week.  Students need to have read four chapter books for a 100% (one)summative grade in reading for this marking period.
If your student made a passing grade this quarter, I can assure you that while a few of them could do better, most students worked very diligently to earn their grade and should be congratulated. Many students worked very hard at mastering the difficult concepts that are being taught in writing. There are several students that have had to overcome some bad habits in order to make a passing grade. If your student did poorly this marking period, I would encourage you to make arrangements that allow your student to come for after tutoring on Tuesdays after school. This is when I can address individual problem areas.
I would like to remind everyone that sixth graders are moving more quickly than parents like to realize into adulthood. Part of growing up is taking responsibility for their work and making up work that is missed. While students should take active responsibility for making up work, there are times when I need to give instruction on how to proceed with work. I cannot just hand the students papers and expect them to understand what was taught. Time must be arranged to receive instruction for writing assignments, as well as to take missed tests and quizzes.
I look forward to the third marking period; I know that our classes will be filled with rich and varied learning experiences.

                            Sincerely,
                            Sharon Curtis
