Dear Parents,

We are almost at the finish line and still learning
each day -- really! (As I learned when I ran track, you keep running all the way THROUGH that finish line!!!)  The enthusiasm the children have shown over their "Center Work" (Math, Vocabulary, Geography and
Language Arts) is awesome!  They take such pride in "showing what they know."  Students used their
expertise on "their states" to put together small
group presentations/tourism brochures on the region to
which their state belongs.  The children also shared their "My Hero" Power Point presentations with the
rest of the class -- thank you to Mrs. Hughes (and for the yummy brownies too)!

On another note, we are collecting the text books for summer storage and we need more PAPER GROCERY BAGS -- about a dozen.  Thanks so much to those who sent them in today.

Finally, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to
teach your children.  They are a joy, and I love each one of them!  Thank you for all your support and all your kindness and generosity throughout the year.

May our Lord bless and keep you and your families,
Mrs. Straub ;)

Great CELERY Experiment:  You may wish to ask your
child about our celery experiment and what they observed about how the dyed water travels UP the stalk, which color seemed to travel the best/most clearly seen, etc.

MAPS:  If your child borrowed one of my National Geographic Maps for his/her state project, please have them bring it in tomorrow.  Thanks.  And thanks to those who already gave them to me!

USA T-SHIRTS:  These should have come home yesterday.
They should be washed in cold water.  I throw mine in the dryer, though you may wish to hang them to dry.  I have done this project for years (from when my son was a toddler!) and they wash and wear quite well.  The signatures on the back are in Sharpie marker.

PAPER GROCERY BAGS:  Please send your child in with
one (or several paper bags) for us to pack away the text books over the summer.  Thanks so much.

RECORDERS:  Please wash and return tomorrow
                   OR
             Send in $6.00 if you can't find/
want to purchase your child's recorder

Have a blessed night!
-Mrs. Straub :)

Thank you to Mrs. Coate, Mrs. Campbell, Mr. Wood, and
Mr. and Mrs. Armas for chaperoning the Field Trip today.  Only a few rain drops, one black snake and lots of water and old time music!  The children loved meeting Nell and Dolly (the mules) and watching the boat workers (Silas Mariner, Millie and Oscar among
others) navigate the locks.  I heard at least one student exclaim, "This was the best day ever!"   It truly was a fun way to step back in time.  Now we are writing about our boat trip from the point of view of the mules!  You'll get to see the children's mule stories and diaries on display in Room 3 on Spring Concert night....
God bless you all,

Dear Parents,
Today was our class Christian Seder/Passover meal. Your children did a wonderful job commemorating how the Jews celebrated Passover.  You may wish to ask your child what the various foods of the meal
symbolize:

Maror (horseradish root) symbolizes the bitterness of
the past suffering of the Jews of Egypt,

Mahtzoh (unleavened bread) symbolizes that the dough
used by the fleeting  Israelites had no time to rise,

Haroset (apple, nut, spice mixture) symbolizes the
mortar the Jews used in carrying out the Pharoah's
labor,

Green herb (parsley) symbolizes the growth of
Springtime,

Egg symbolizes new life,

Lamb symbolizes the Lamb of God, the sacrifice of our Lord, and

Grape Juice symbolizes wine and of course, blood.

Also today, the children got to experience the Living Stations reenacted by the 8th grade.  It was a moving experience!

God bless your evening,
Mrs. Straub ;)

Dear Parents,

The children are doing an amazing job presenting their
Culture Kits!  The Kits turned out really well with so many unusual, creative items from Israeli stamps to actual sugar canes to a Chinese dragon to cornflour fritters.  We even had one person do the presentation in the accent of the country!  Many discussions have
been prompted as well, including one about WWII.  I look forward to tomorrow when I hear there will be costumes and (more) music!  This "culture sharing" ties in with our study of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants.

Have a blessed evening,
Mrs. Straub

We are off to a good start this week.  The children are memorizing the Luminous Mysteries.  (Then, during Lent, we will focus in on the Sorrowful Mysteries.)  In Science, we are studying how plants live and grow.  In Social Studies, we continue our study of the West.  Also, the children have been preparing a very special project for the Gala in which they are practing their Writing skills.
The children enjoyed their pizza lunch (and caffeine-free Sierra Mist) today.  This was earned for keeping our room clean and tidy.
The Multiplication Ice Cream Sundae Celebration is Friday.  Thank you to all who bought items and to those volunteering to help out.
God bless you,

Dear Parents,
We have been learning Jesus' miracles and how they
reflect the coming of the Kingdom, particularly how they illustrate our call to action today to help "heal" our friends and neighbors in need.  Your children are so kind-hearted and they enjoyed acting out some of these miracles.  You may wish to ask them
about the mini-plays they performed as well as how Matthew, the tax collector, was lost and lonely until Jesus showed him kindness and he followed Jesus.
In Math, we learned that if you know your X 4s it can
help you with the X 8s.  Double your product for the
X 4 and you have the answer to the X 8!
Today, on the anniversary of his birth, we read about
Martin Luther King, Jr., and touched on the concepts
of "passive resistance", "civil rights", and "boycott."  You may wish to ask your child what
MLK stands for, where he was born (Atlanta), in what year he was born (1929), how old he would be today, who the Indian man he admired was (Ghandi), etc.
We also learned about the Inauguration this week and
all the festivities it entails.  In addition, they began the process of writing about the first three things they would do if they were President Obama.  It should prove to be quite interesting!  The plan is to put their "essays" in a booklet and send it to the President.
God bless you all.  Have a good (warm and cozy!) night!
In Christ,
Mrs. Straub ;)

No Homework!

Dear Parents,
A few notes:
First, thank you for the lovely, generous Christmas
gifts!  I gave the children my "thank you" cards on Monday, but I'm not sure if they all made it home to you.  :)
Next, speaking of Christmas, a word on the Class
Christmas Party -- many, many thanks to those who
helped out, either by organizing it, by bringing items
in and/or by being here!  Those I noted were:
Mrs. Llamas, Mrs. Tunon (Rubio), Mrs. Campbell, Mrs.
Hollcraft, Mrs. Rosenthal, Mr. Rodriguez and Mrs. Brown
I hope I didn't leave anyone out.
In Math news, a note on our Multiplication work is coming home to you today, along with a handout on ways to study our next times table, the 4s.
In Social Studies, we have started studying the Midwest Region.  In Reading, we began Reading Groups and also continued our large group story called, "The Patchwork Quilt."  In addition, we read Patricia Polacco's, "The Keeping Quilt," and I brought in a
quilt for the children to see.
Finally, today the children broke into groups and
acted out two miracles of Jesus via mini-plays.  Then they shared their reviews of each other's performances in the "Critic's Corner."  They were truthful but kind reviewers!  It was a fun learning experience.

God bless your families in a special way this weekend,
Mrs. Straub :)

p.s.  The Organizing Seminar, which had been postponed earlier, was held this week.  The children reviewed the benefits of being organized with Mrs. Forbes.  A handout was sent home in the Wed. Folders on this.

Dear Parents,

The Christmas Break is here and so we are that much closer to ending our Advent Journey!  We have been studying the Joyful Mysteries by reading the passages in which they are revealed in the Bible.  Your child should have a good idea of how to look up a Bible Verse (if they did not already know how).  Some other highlights from this past week of school include our Science learning -- you may wish to ask your child about the "Pinata in the Room" mystery, Science Bingo, and our Gingerbread and Apple experiments.  In Math, are starting Multiplication -- more on our Multiplication Sundae Program after the break.  ;)  We recently finished reading, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever."  After watching the movie version of this book, we compared and contrasted the two, using a Venn Diagram.   (Our current read aloud is "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.")

Today we shared our Christmas traditions and made cards for a second grader who was baptized after mass.  Speaking of cards, the class made cards for wounded soldiers recovering at Walter Reed Army Hospital.  Your children are so enthusiastic and ready to spread their joy and love!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families!

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

Dear Parents,
Hope your Advent is going well so far.
Tuesday, Dec. 9th is Three Kings Shop Day for our
class (this is a change from the orig. date on your St. A's calendar).  The children bring money and then
go Christmas Shopping for gently used items.
Today, after mass, we celebrated Fr. Irace's birthday
with singing, spiritual bouquets from each grade and a Vietnamese dance performed by several of our very own 3rd grade girls!  Nice job ladies!  (They will also be dancing at Sister Cecilia's Charity Gala, Vietnam Dreams for Success, this weekend.)  We also feted St. Ambrose's Feast Day with honey donuts donated by Krispy Kreme.  Sr. Cecilia came by to enjoy them with our class.
Also today, the children did a Science Lab in which they examined the properties of the three states of matter and recorded their observations.  You may wish to ask your child what he/she learned.  Earlier in the week, we learned about the Jesse Tree and what its symbols mean.  In Social Studies, we continued our study of the South, and in Math, of Outcomes and Probability.

Also, you may wish to ask them about the Jesse Tree
and its meaning and about our current Read Aloud, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever."
Thank you and may our Lord bless you this season in a special way.

SPELLING BEE INFO.:
I am happy to pass on the following information that I
received on the SPELLING BEE.  The school-wide Spelling Bee is for 7th and 8th graders only and is planned for late January.  Last year it was very exciting to have our Class Bee and then to watch and root for the 7th and 8th graders in their "spell off!"  If you wish, you may go to
www.myspellit.com
for tricks and study tips.  Another great place for study hints and practice words: www.spellingbee.com/studyzone.asp

Today an Entertainment Book came home in a plastic bag, along with "directions" on this sale.  Also, Report Cards came home, with the exception of one student, whose card did not print properly at the last minute (he will get it tomorrow).  I did not realize that I was the only teacher to hand them out today, so we are the early birds!  I look forward to meeting with you at our conference time next week.
Today, we talked briefly about the election process.  Things such as, what is a candidate, vote, election, etc.  In addition, we touched on the blessing of living in a democracy instead of a kingdom or dictatorship.  The bottom line was that voting is a right and a privilege and we should take it seriously.  God bless the USA!

Dear Parents,
The Field Trip went wonderfully well -- we had 7 chaperones and dear Sr. Cecelia along!  How blessed we are!  The children got complimented on their behavior and manners, as well.  I think the Gallery folks were surprised, because we are below the age group (they had it listed for 4th grade) to which they normally offer the program.  St. Ambrose students really shine!
You may wish to ask your child about the paintings they explored today and the stories behind them, including:
a 15th century party scene, girl and dog in blue chairs, a shark nearly eating a young boy (!), a shipwreck and David and Goliath  (the other group -- we were split into ANGELS and SAINTS -- may have seen some different paintings).  As a follow-up, the children are drawing pictures and writing the story they imagine goes with them.
God bless you all; may you have a wonderful evening.
In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

Dear Parents,

Friendly Reminder: "Picture Day" is tomorrow!

Today, we reviewed/learned Column Addition in Math.  The children are learning to see how place values correspond to Regrouping (or "carrying" as we used to call it) using Column Addition. You may wish to remind your child about the example in class when Sue traded in 10 pennies for a dime and 10 dimes for a dollar.

In Reading, we are reading a lovely story called, "City Green," about a community in which the people clean up a vacant lot to start a garden, led by who else, but a child.  There is a grumpy character who reluctantly comes around and ends up doing a very nice thing.

We are also:

>Studying Cause and Effect
You may wish to ask your children some examples, such as:

-FOREST FIRE STARTS
-SOMEONE THROWS A BURNING CIGARETTE OUT OF A CAR
         WINDOW
Which is the CAUSE, which is the EFFECT?  You may be
surprised how difficult this concept is to grasp for
many.
>Learning to locate names of businesses in the Yellow
Pages using Guide Words and
>Continuing our study of Nouns.

Soon, we will begin our Saint Report.  This is a simple "5 Ws" report, which is quite popular with the children.  We all learn a great deal.  I will be helping the students research their chosen saints in class.  First, they will be completing a Saint Research Sheet, next they will do a draft, then comes a peer edit, then teacher edit and finally, the Final Report.

On the horizon is our Field Trip to the National Gallery -- Oct. 30th.  Permission Slips will be coming home as we get closer.  The docent who will be leading our class tour called me AT HOME to see what our group's needs are, etc. -- now that's service!!

Wednesday Folders are coming home today -- kindly sign and return them.

May God bless and keep you.

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

"Dr. DeSoto," so you may wish to
ask your child about that if they
come to you for assistance. :)

Dear Parents,

I hope you are having a good weekend.  The sun is out and the world looks fresh and new again...

Let me take this opportunity to introduce to you our new Teaching Assistant for 3rd Grade, Mrs. Gail Carome.  Some of you may know her as she is the mother of a couple of St. Ambrose students.  She is coming in for 10 hours a week -- mostly mornings.  I am delighted to be working with her.  She has a gentle way and is wonderful with the children.

In other exciting 3rd grade news, our Field Trip to the National Gallery is set for Thursday, October 30th.  I will be in touch with our Room Mother, Mrs. Hollcraft, to work out the chaperones.  Permission slips will be coming home as the day draws nearer.

This week the children learned a little bit about St. Padre Pio, including the meaning of stigmata.  We also attempted to make a volcano, but learned why they call it an "experiment" when it didn't quite work -- the bottle underneath our papier mache volcano was too large -- the baking soda and vingear fizzed, but could not get over the top.  We will give it another try Monday by insertin a smaller bottle!

Your children continue to amaze me with, among other things, their insights, ponderings, worries, charity and generosity.  They are also very curious, which makes teaching a joy.

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub  ;)

11 September 2008

Dear Parents,

Today, obviously, is the seven year anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks.  St. Ambrose School sang "God Bless America" this morning at prayer, as well as had the flag at half-mast.  Other than that, as they are so young, we did not discuss the significance of the date in 3rd grade, nor did any students ask about it.  Just wanted you to know how it was handled.

Also, I wanted to share with you that we have discussed in class that each person is born with a smooth heart (our feelings) and that each time someone says or does something thoughtless, mean, hurtful, etc., our heart gets a wrinkle.  Once the wrinkle on our heart it cannot be erased, so we need to be mindful of how we treat others.  I take a construction paper heart and wrinkle it up as the children call out different ways that we hurt each other.  It hangs above the chalkboard as a reminder.  This came in handy as I found a couple of hurtful notes -- I was able to use heart as a reference point in my discussion with the children that we do not write notes in school for many reasons.  (However, they may use the classroom mailbox to do so, provided the notes are positive.)

Finally, I know you got a lot of information to sift through at Back-to-School Night; please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.  Thanks.

Homework:
Math -- study for test
Spelling -- study for test

God bless and keep you,
Mrs. Straub : )

Dear Parents,
-Homework is to read for 15 minutes -- or more!
-Newly arrived homework agendas should have come home today.  Please sign your child's agenda at the bottom of the page.  I will be asking for your signature each day in the Agenda so that we can communicate informally -- there is a space for notes to me -- so that I know that you looked at it and so that your child realizes their responsibility in trying their best to write down the homework correctly and not rely on Schoolnotes.
-Your child may have brought home an "artwork" that he/she began in class for the Cover and Inside Page Art Contest for the School Directory.  These are due at school on Sept. 9th.
-Thank you and God bless you,

2 Sept. 2008

Dear Families in Christ,
The book report projects look good and we are sharing them with each other.

Tonight's homework:
-Math:  Book p. 5, #6-14 on a separate paper
-Reading: Read story "Grandfather's Journey"
          p. 44, Questions #1-4  on a separate paper
-Do your book report project if you did not turn it in
today.  Bring your hot pink bookworm paper in also.

-Please have your child bring in 4 USED tennis balls
(or more IF you have them) for us to put on the
bottoms of the chairs to cut down on the noise level
and increase the learning atmosphere.  :)  Please do
not buy new ones; just bring old ones you don't want.
Thank you to those who already brought them in.

The children's homework agendas are supposed to come
in this week.  (Hurrah!)

Finally, a Book-It Flyer from Pizza Hut was sent home
today.  Please know that this program is entirely
optional, but can really encourage reluctant readers
and can help keep your child motivated.  I do not put
any weight at all on whether or not your child
chooses to participate in Book-It.  (FYI,we will be
having "Read for 15 minutes" as a part of each night's
homework starting soon.)

Enjoy the beautiful weather.
God bless you,
Mrs. Straub  ;)

29 August 2008

Dear Families,
Welcome to Third Grade!  It is an honor and a
privilege to have your child in our class.  You will receive information on our classroom in my welcome
letter, and I look forward to meeting you and to
seeing those of you I already have met at Back to School Night.

For this weekend's homework, the children are to take
out their "hot pink bookworm paper" (which should be in the green "takehome" folder) and:

1. Select a bookworm project from the pink paper to do on one of the books they read this summer
2. Do the project
3. Place an "X" next to the project you chose on the hot pink bookworm paper
4. Bring the project to school on Tuesday along with
   with your hotpink paper

If you were absent, or do not have the hot pink paper, please do the following project and turn it in on Tuesday:

Write AND illustrate four sentences from your book that begin with the words "First," "Next," "Then" and "Finally."
For example:
First, Laura Ingalls goes to a new school.
Next, she meets Nellie Olson.
Then, her teacher catches her fighting with Nellie on
the playground.
Finally, Laura learns that she must try her best to make peace with Nellie.

Thank you and God bless you and your families!

Here is some info. from the US Dept. of Labor website regarding Labor Day:
"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."

Happy Labor Day!

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub  :)
