Dear Parents,
As you may have heard our dear frog eggs, ordered from a
biological supply co., didn't make it.  Several of your
children have said that they have access to frog eggs
and/or tadpoles in their neighborhoods.  I would love to
have either one or both in the classroom for the
children to observe the lifecycle.  So, if you wish them
to collect some (along with some of their habitat water)
and can help them to obtain them I would greatly
appreciate it.  My son and I canvassed several streams
in Fairfax City last weekend yet were unsuccessful in
this endeavor!  I think ponds are the best bet...

One other note, please bring in Potomac River Cruise
Field Trip slips/payment (cash please) if you are
attending.  Thanks so much for your support.

Dear Parents,
I shared with the children today that I have ordered a batch of 50 - 100 frogs eggs and I got confirmation just now that they were shipped!  It will be so exciting to watch them progress through the stages to frog-hood.  :)
(Also, 2nd grade is 'hatching' a praying mantis egg pod, so the children have another opportunity to observe another of God creature's go through its life cycle.)
Later this week we will celebrate an abbreviated Christian Seder/Passover meal in class, so the children can see what Jesus would have done for this Jewish feast.  (I did this when I taught 5th grade CCD and the children participated enthusiastically and were quite interested to see how our mass was born out of Jewish rituals.)  We will tie in the fact that the Pope visited a synogogue and made history in doing so.
In Math we are focusing on telling time using analog clocks.  Some of the children know how, some do not, many are not sure of themselves.
In Social Studies we are studying the Northeast Region of the U.S.
Please return signed report card with envelope if you have not done so already.  Thank you.
God bless you and your families,

No Homework.

Dear Parents,
What a glorious week we have had with our Holy Father in
town!!!!!!  Several students and/or their family members in our class were able to catch a glimpse of Pope Benedict live!  Our class was able to watch the entire Papal Mass with the sixth grade yesterday on the huge SMARTBOARD!  The children participated to a degree -- in the responses and songs and such -- and seemed to enjoy this most special celebration.  They also wrote poems about the Pope and colored a picture of him as well as learned a bit about Bishops and Popes in Religion.  In addition, we did some Pope Benedict XVI Trivia.  You may wish to ask your child what Pope Benedict's cat's name is (Chico), what his favorite soft drink is (Orange
Fanta), how many encyclicals he has written (2), what
color his shoes are (red), or how many holy people he has canonized (14).  We have an entire Pope Bulletin Board in our hallway if you want to take a peek.

The other major event this week was Testing of course.
The children should relax and rest up for the last day of Terra Nova testing on Monday.  The makeup day for those who missed any testing last week is Tuesday.

Finally, as we begin the last quarter, the classroom is in need of the following:
-Tissues
-Papertowels
-Clorox-type wipes (we have enough baby wipes)
-Treasure box donations (these can be trinkets, nothing
big or pricey is necessary)
Thank you to those who have donated items in the past. It is always greatly appreciated.

God bless your families and your weekend,
Mrs. Straub :)

No Homework

Dear Parents,
Spring has sprung!  There is that extra energy in
the air and in the third grade....
Your child is bringing home a Capacity "Center."  Ask him or her to show it to you show (in the plastic bag).  Speaking of measuring, we also learned about Customary and Metric Units of Measure through a fun
clever story about pen pals from the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, you may wish to ask your child about "outer beauty" vs. "inner beauty."  This came up through our Narnia book (The Horse and His Boy), in which there is a very self-centered character.  Recalling a lesson from "Girls on the Run" a student said, we learned that that is called being focused
on "outer beauty."  We talked of Blessed Mother Theresa
and her outer vs. inner appeareance.  Yet
another example of your wonderful children learning life and faith lessons as well as academic ones.
Hope to see you at the BINGO tomorrow night from 6-
8!  Have a blessed weekend.
In Christ,
Mrs. Straub  ; )

3/20-3/30/08

Dear Parents,
     Greetings in Christ!
In the "you should know" department: On Thursday, due to a report from a very reliable source, I spoke to the children about the extra love and care that children with special needs need from us.  It seems a couple of boys from our class may have been teasing the sibling of a child at our school who has Down Syndrome.  The children were wonderfully attentive and responsive and shared their experiences and concerns about this topic.
I want to thank those parents who were able to come to the Multiplication Celebration Ice Cream Sundae Party -- Mr. and Mrs. Molnar, Mrs. Tinio and Dr. Hipolito.  A big 'thank you' also to all the families who contributed all the ice cream and sundae items!  The children enjoyed their sundaes (with great relish!) and later shared their journal thoughts on what Jesus did for each of us; it was a wonderful way to begin Easter Break.  Happy and Blessed Easter to you and your families!  Safe travels wherever you go!
Alleluia!
-Mrs. Straub ;)

Homework is Reading (15 min.) and Spelling (pretest Thurs.).

Re: MATH:  Some children have mastered subtraction; some have not.  The latter group will be able to retake the Math Test on Friday.  Tomorrow the children will receive the tests from today.  They saw their grades today.

Re: Lent:  You may wish to ask your child what was said to them as they received their ashes at mass today, and why. ("Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.")  Also we learned that the ashes are the palms from Palm Sunday.  Finally, as part of a school-wide project, the children received small crocheted crosses which they are to wear to school throughout Lent.  They also received a small paper cross on which they wrote one thing they are giving up for Lent and one positive thing they are doing to prepare for Lent/Easter.  These will become part of a large school cross to show that at St. Ambrose, we help each other carry our crosses.

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

Dear Parents,

I hope the children enjoyed the Pizza Party today -- it was kind of a crazy day with the late start and faculty/student basketball games!  You may wish to ask your child about the Religion Fair.  The 7th and 8th graders prepared excellent informative displays on our faith and we dropped by to see them at the Parish Hall.  We got a bit wet in the process!
The Spelling Bee for our class will be Monday.  Please get the words off the school website if you want your child to study.
Finally, you may wish to watch the news or check the 'net with your child to get an update on the groundhog and his shadow.  ;)
See you at the Gala!

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

Dear Parents,
A couple items for your attention....

HCA Donation/Prayer Opportunity:
During Catholic Schools Week, the St. Ambrose Community is giving money to poor countries for material and spiritual needs through the Holy Childhood Association (HCA).  Our class chose the country of South Africa.  If you wish, your child may bring in some coins or you may make donation (checks to be made out to Holy Childhood Assoc.) donation and your child can drop it in our class mini globe HCA piggy bank.  We are also praying especially for the poor in S. Africa.

Spelling Bee:  Please look on the school website to find the Third Grade Spelling List.  Your child MAY study for this Spelling Bee.  Please note, originally I did not want anyone to study the word list ahead of time, but some children already had the list, so now all children must have access to make it fair.  We will have the Spelling Bee Friday.

Pizza Party:  The children earned a Pizza Party this Friday by everyone getting their homework done for 5 days straight.  So, this Friday, PLEASE DO NOT PACK YOUR A LUNCH for your child, unless of course they do not eat pizza.  ;)

Again, thank you for all your notes, mass cards, and words of support during my recent family emergencies.
May God bless you and your families.

In Christ,
Mrs. Straub

such as prefixes and suffixes, integrate what they are
learning via proofreading, etc., as well as eliminate
