HAPPY HALLOWEEN – HOLY ALL SAINTS DAY
Dear Parents,
TODAY I SENT HOME THE CONFERENCE NOTIFICATION IN THE GO-HOME FOLDERS.  PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS.  MY SCHEDULE IS TIGHT.  I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO OVER THE ALLOTTED TIME PER CHILD.  THANKS!
I want to thank the parents who have given me encouragement about taking time off to take care of my grandbaby next week.  I feel a lot of love and support.  It will be an adventure!  MY baby is 22.
The children learned about saints this week.  Their share at home activity is to learn about a saint (their patron saint?) and talk about him or her with the family.  They know that a saint was a real person.  He or she spent their lives in service to God.  I did not discuss martyrs.  Saturday is the Feast of All Saints.  I told the children that Halloween is not just about costumes and candy.  It is the night before All Saints Day.  Even though Saturday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, some religious activity or discussion (saints?) would be nice.
This week we have practiced the letter H.  Good timing for Halloween.  We talked about and acted out Action Words.  The children are becoming aware that the words they use are individual, Concept of Word.  We learned another Word Family, -ap, complete with a Word Machine.  Next week the children will do Dd with Mrs. Schilling.  They will meet another Word Family, -ad.  Reading is becoming a serious activity around here.
We finished up the assessment math packet about Geometric shapes.  We have begun number work informally.  Next week Mrs. Schilling will begin the math packet about sets.  The children will learn to use one-to-one lines to see if two sets of objects are equal.  They will learn how to determine which set has more/which has fewer.  Then they will learn how to equalize two sets.  This is a preliminary activity for addition.
This week we have used Pumpkins and Halloween topics across the curriculum:  religion, language arts, math and science and social studies.  Next week the children will learn about the 5 Senses.  We began this with our first science experiment about apples.
I want to thank ALL the parents who came on the field trip to Cox Farm.  We had 13 moms.  It was great!  The children had individual experiences as well as the group hay ride and cow milking show.  And the children loved picking out their own pumpkin.
Officer Wilson from the Falls Church City Police Department came to the room and talked to all the kindergarten children about Trick or Treat safety, but…the children already knew so many facts!  Have a wonderful evening and may God keep all of you safe.  I look forward to seeing the costumes come to my door.  FYI – Grace will be a Pumpkin.  So will the dog.
Reminders:
1.     Next Week – 1ST Quarter Report Cards distributed
2.    Friday, November 14 – 11:30 AM Dismissal
3.    MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10 – PARENT CONFERENCES, no school, no daycare – CHILDREN DO NOT ATTEND CONFERENCES
4.    TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 – PARENT CONFERENCES, no school, no daycare – CHILDREN DO NOT ATTEND CONFERENCES
Thank you,
Mrs. Pl

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
October 23, 2008
Please do not send in videos unless I ask for specific themes.  Our video time is curriculum based.  It disappoints a child when I cannot show his or her video.  Thanks for your understanding.
Dear Parents,
I hope you and yours will have a nice day off tomorrow.  I, of course, have to go to school at Bishop O’Connell.  We had another one of those short but busy weeks.  We practiced Pp.  The children learned a couple of new sight words.  Please read the mini book, Happy Birthday, with your child.  It contains the words I, you, the, have and transfer finding those words in other books.  For the children who can read have your child use those words to write sentences, riddles?, of their own.  They can bring them in and share with the class if they want.  Some of the children are still having trouble writing their names “kindergarten style’ on all the daily papers.  However, they write it correctly in the handwriting practice book.  So they can but the preschool habit is hard to break.  It actually has something to do with “muscle memory.”  Their hands are programmed to write one way and we are changing that.  Practice here and at home.
The children took the Math Packet about Geometric Shapes home yesterday.  We still have some activities to do in the classroom concerning “solid” shapes.  Then we will begin the chapters on numbers.  This is not just number recognition.  We will learn to count out sets, combine sets (addition), separate sets (subtraction), tally, work with ten stacks and ten frames and so much more.
You should be learning from you kindergartner:  “Who made us?  Why did He make us? Did He make all people? What must we do to all people?  I got so carried away with the religion lesson on Wednesday that Mrs. Marra had to come and get us for Art!  Next week we will learn about the Saints in preparation for All Saints Day.  The children will learn that Halloween is not just a time to dress up and get candy.  That it is in fact All Hallows Eve and it is a celebration of the saints.
We combined our Science/Social Study time with learning more Fall facts and learning about more Community Helpers.  Ask your child who Mrs. Piccariello thinks has the most important community job.  Hint: Our neighborhoods don’t stink because of them.   Next week we will do pumpkin activities.
Reminders:
1.    Thursday, October 30 – Field trip – Pumpkin patch –GYM UNIFORMS – MUST WEAR BLUE SWEATS.
2.    Friday, October 31 – Regular morning, regular uniforms – Costumes in bag LABELED.   Costumes MUST fit over uniforms.  Parade and party in the afternoon.
Have a fun, safe and holy three days.
Mrs. P.

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
October 17,2008

Dear Parents,
This has been a short but busy week.  (Will I ever write “this has been a long and lazy week?” Who knows?)  We met Ms. J.  We are coral reading (altogether) very well now.  The children are tracking the words across one by one as we read.  They are recognizing repeated words.  This is important to reinforce at home by rereading the mini books with your child.  The children continue to read in small groups in the hall with our aide.  The children are also getting more comfortable with handwriting.  We are not copying from the board yet.  We will do that when we begin “Journaling” in our Picture/Writing Journal.
I am impressed with how quickly most of the children have caught on to patterning.  Ask your child to show you with crayons, patterns that are one-one, one-two, two-two, one-two-three and GROWING patterns.  We finished the math packet on Patterns and will move right on to geometric (solid) shapes.
We had our whole school Mass on Thursday morning.  During this Mass the Student Council was inducted and the Safety Patrol received their badges.  It was long.  We flew through lunch and still had a short recess.  The children are behaving very well in church.  They can do it.
We had a great demonstration from Officer Pena (Hunter’s dad.) A K-9 officer and his partner, Dozen, came also.  Dozen the dog showed how he sniffed out gasoline.  The truck couldn’t make it due to mechanical problems.  The children loved trying on the coat, vest, boots and hat.  Thank you Pena family.
We did some police officer activities as we continue studying Community Helpers.
We also learned some leaf facts.  Ask your child what makes leaves green?  (Chlorophyll) Ask them what do leaves make for the tree?  (sugar)  We will continue both Community Helpers and Fall facts throughout October.  I reserve Halloween talk and actives to the last week of October.  I can only handle the hyperactivity for one week!
We had a WONDERFUL response from parents to chaperone for the Pumpkin Patch, Thursday, October 30.  I have a two to one ratio!  Everyone who checked the box just come.  Sign in at the office and come to the classroom.  We will leave promptly at 9:00 am.  We will return by 1:00 pm.  You are free to take your child after that but your child must ride the bus back to school.  There will need to be parent carpools, not everyone can fit on the bus. You can meet your carpool here.  This way I will know that you are coming.  You get your instructions and assignments here.  In the past drivers just follow the buses, they’re hard to lose.  The children wear complete GYM UNIFORMS, red shorts and shirts AND blue sweat pants and shirt.
Remember, next Friday, October24 is no school, no daycare.
Have a happy and holy weekend.
Mrs. P.

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
October 10, 2008

Dear Parents,
We continue to roll along merrily.  We completed our religious study of Creation.  The children’s Creation pictures are hanging in the hall.  They will be sent home soon.  In the following weeks we will discuss how God made all people good.
We will continue to observe the Fall changes.  We will discuss Fall fruits i.e., apples and pumpkins.  In Social Studies we will continue to learn about other “community helpers” and how their jobs are important to us.  We enjoyed everything about our study of Fire Safety.  The children (and you) have some homework this weekend.  They need to learn which door is the quickest way out of their home, i.e., from their bedroom.  AND you need to establish a “meeting place” outside and away from the house.  The children are expecting this.  They were all quizzed individually on address and phone number.  There is some work to be done in that area also.  Learning this personal information needs to come from home.  Teach them a phone number that will reach someone directly and quickly.  I once called an emergency backup number for a sick child and I got a relative in Virginia Beach!
Our review of the first 5 letters included more phonics practice and more handwriting work.  We began our Handwriting practice books this week.  Their “kindergarten style” names are looking quite nice, in the practice books…now we have to transfer this to the everyday work papers and activities.  Next week we will do the letter Jj.  Following will be Pp and then there will be phonics “testing” for the First Quarter Report Cards.  FYI - I call this “show what you know” and the children sit apart so there can be no “sharing.”  Please do not mention testing.  The children continue to read in the hall by tables with our Aide.  Their sight words include “a”, “I”, “the”, “me”, “my”, the –am Word Family and more!
Well, Mrs. Piccariello can get carried away.  I had all my lesson plans ready to do a quick shape review and then jump into geometric shapes.  However, after the shapes review I jumped into PATTERNS!  I guess I was so excited to begin “clap-snap-tap!”  So we will continue patterns next week in math.  THEN we’ll do geometric shapes!
Mrs. Zyla has been right on! with getting the class parties organized.  And I am privy via email to all the responses from all of you.  A question that has come up was concerning the two different dates for Christmas Pageants on the School Calendar in December.  The important kindergarten day is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12.  That is OUR pageant followed by a small party in the classroom.  The other pageant day is for the older kids.
Other upcoming important dates are:
1.     Wednesday, October 15 - ATF presentation (Hunter’s dad)
2.     Friday, October 24 – No school, no daycare/Diocesan Teacher Institute
3.    Friday, October 30 – Cox Farm Field Trip/I’ve had a good response for volunteers.  It will be a 2 to 1 ratio!!!  Thanks!!!  There will probably have to be parent chaperone carpools organized.  Not everyone will fit on the buses.
4.    Friday, October 31 – Costume parade/party.  The children bring their costumes in a bag and put them on in the afternoon.  They need to fit over the uniform.  We don’t have facilities for changing clothes.  Thanks.
5.    Friday, November 7 – Early Dismissal
6.    Monday, November 10 and Tuesday, November 11 – Parent Conference days/no school, no daycare.  Children DO NOT come to school with their parents for conferences.  Please arrange care for your children in advance.

I’m going to stop here with all the upcoming events.  My brain is overwhelmed.  Have a safe, wonderful, holy long weekend.
Mrs. P.

UNIFORM INFORMATION:  Both girls and boys can wear the long uniform pants at anytime.  The Saint James logo sweater (boys and girls) is part of the formal Winter uniform.  The formal Winter uniform is not required yet but other sweaters cannot be worn inside if your child gets cold.  The blue Gym uniform sweatshirt IS NOT part of the dress uniform.  Vice versa, the blue sweater IS NOT part of the blue Gym uniform.  For your child’s well being please dress them appropriately.  Thanks.
Dear Parents,
Welcome to October.  Our field trip to the Fire Station was a great success.  Thanks to Brett’s mom, Sofia F.’s mom and Hunter’s mom for bravely walking with us.  We will continue our unit on Fire Safety through next week.  We will have the Fire Safety Puppet Show on Thursday, October 9.  We will include our study of Fall along with our other October Units, one of which will be about Christopher Columbus.
This week in Religion we learned yet another aspect of the Creation Story; God made the land with its many gifts.   Each child is putting a Creation picture together.  Our last part for this unit will be God made the animals.  We have watched the children’s videos on Creation and Noah’s Ark.
Your child brought home the –am Word Machine last week.  Keep this, there will be more.  They are good sources of practice and review.  The children can isolate the word “a” in print.  They have been practicing sight words in the minibooks.  We are beginning to isolate repeated words in the minibooks.  They read in small groups this week with Mrs. Toch in the hall.  They go out by tables right now to get used to the routine.  The reading groups will begin shortly.  I have a pretty good handle on each child’s abilities and work habits.  We have been practicing Ss this week.  Next week we will review the 5 letters we have learned to date.  We will spend time on phonics in our phonics workbooks and printing the letters in our handwriting practice books.  We will continue reading and sight word building around the curriculum.
The next few math packets will include a quick review of basic shapes, circle, square, triangle and rectangle.  We will learn patterns.  We clap, snap and tap patterns in one-one, one-two, two-two and so on patterns.  The movement helps the children to internalize the repeat in patterns.  They will identify the “pattern rule” and extend patterns.  Some of the patterns can be quite complex.  Then we will do geometric, solid, shapes.  These will include sphere, cube, cylinder, cone and rectangular prism.
We have already begun looking around our outside environment for Signs of Fall.  We will be observers while the trees change color, watch the squirrels gather acorns, and read stories about animals getting ready for hibernation.  We will also take note of the changing weather and how we need to adjust our clothing for the cooler weather.  Fall is my favorite season.
    Remember:
1. Friday, October 10 – Early Release, 11:30 AM Dismissal
2. Monday, October 13 – Columbus Day, No School – No Daycare
Have a happy and holy weekend.
Mrs. P.

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
September 26, 2008
Dear Parents,
You may receive two newsletters this week. The first edition was pulled for review by the software vendor because it contained a “red flag” word. The word started with a “B” and described the sniffing dog that will be part of the ATF demonstration. Can you guess the word?
September is about to end.  With October comes our study of Fall.  We will learn why leaves change color and fall off the trees, why acorns are important, what are Fall fruits and vegetables and what is a harvest.  We will study animal behavior in the Fall and what it means to hibernate.  We will have a field trip to Cox farm on Thursday, October 30.  More information will be coming home.  FYI, I would love  a two to one ratio, parent to child.  It’s a very large place and my goal is to let each child experience it safely and as fully as possible.  If I don’t have enough parents I have to keep them together in a large group and there is no opportunity for individual experiences.  Thanks in advance.  Along with our Fall unit we will learn Fire Safety that includes our field trip to the fire station and a Fire Safety Puppet Show on Thursday, October 9.  We will learn about many of our Community Helpers.  We will have a visit from the ATF truck and  a working dog thanks to Mr. Pena (Hunter’s dad.)  If you have a community helper job let me know and we can arrange for you to visit.
We have been exploring the different aspects of the Creation Story.  God has given us wonderful gifts and we can use them in wonderful ways.  It is our responsibility to use them wisely and always say “Thank You, God.”  Your child should be sharing with you what they know about the “Gift” of light and the “Gift” of water.  Next week we will include the “Gift” of land.  Father Handley came to our room this week and spoke to the children about many things.  He told them about Baptism (water), The Tabernacle Light (the red light) and how to respond to a blessing.  We will certainly have Father Handley come back.  Our prayer for September was Angel of God.  We will learn and pray the Hail Mary in October.  October 2 is Guardian Angel Day.
We introduced Aa into our letter line-up.  With a vowel we can begin forming words.  Some of the children do not quite have “concept of word.”  When you read a book with your child have your child touch and move his/her finger along with each word you read.  This helps them grasp the idea that there are written symbols associated with the words we speak.  We do this as a group but reinforcing it at home, one on one, is a great help to your child.  I can tell some of the children are practicing writing their names “Kindergarten Style,” first letter upper case and the rest lower case.  Keep up the good work.  There are pages I designate as homework in the Math Packets and consumable workbooks I send home.  The directions are on each page and the activities are fun. The children know this is homework.  I asked the children who were doing their homework and some hands did not go up.  Homework in Kindergarten is not mandatory at this point in the year but it reinforces what we do in school, tells your child that you are interested in what they are doing and prepares them for the BIG jump into homework that begins in First Grade.
We had quite a rollicking time each morning this week as we explored sorting many things in many ways.  The children aced the “test” for the beginning of the chapter about sorting so we were able to jump into higher level sorting right away.  We will continue with this next week.  Learning how to identify likenesses and differences is essential not only in math but in reading as well.  We continue to build our 100 Days of School chart.  We are learning rows and columns, number patterning and recognition of higher numbers.  Ask your child how many days of school we have had (23.)  We do not include days off.  The children do a monthly calendar.  They write the numbers (trace right now) and learn that months have 30 or 31 days (except February.)  For our little assessment at the beginning of the year the children rote counted to 25.  But the expectation is that each child will rote count to 100.
We had our first science “exploration” this week.  We identified and used our 5 senses to learn about apples.  We used descriptive words for what we saw, what we heard, what we felt, what we smelled and then we had a tasting time and described what each apple tasted like.  Ask your child what color apples we studied and what they learned about apples.  We also did a “history” lesson about John Chapman, aka, Johnny Appleseed.  Ask your child what a legend is.  There are many legends about Johnny Appleseed.
DATES TO REMEMBER:
1.     Friday, October 10, is an EARLY RELEASE day (11:30 am.)
2.    Monday, October 13, is Columbus Day, no school – no daycare.
3.    Friday, October 24, Diocesan Educational Institute, no school – no daycare.
Have a happy and holy weekend.

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
September 19, 2008

Dear Parents,
The children are forming a nice working and social group.  I began the “Good Choices” program this week.  I’m sure some of you heard about it!  I’ve shocked some of the children but “no talking” is “no talking” for everyone (-:
We have discussed, endlessly, the need to follow the rules.  I can assure you we will be sailing smoothly in no time.  The children will be keeping me on track soon.
As you have seen, each child who stays on Green gets a sticker on his or her folder. They may have received a Pink Token but if they made better choices after, they will get a sticker.  If your child does not get a new sticker everyday then s/he had to change their Choice card to Yellow.  No one has gone to Orange.  You can tell about your child’s week be counting stickers.  There should be 5 today (except the two children who took off the first big sticker!)
In Religion we continued the Creation story by learning that God Created the Sun, Moon and Stars because He wants us always to have light.  We talked about how God is our Light because he taught us how to behave (the Bible and the 10 Commandments.)  We also talked about how God Created Man with a brain to make light such as candles, light bulbs, etc.  We used a flashlight and Globe to see that the sun is always shinning AND we learned that the Moon “shines” because the Sun light bounces off of it!  (A little science tossed in.)  Next week we will learn “God Gave us Water.”  We will learn that He quenches our thirst with water and knowledge.
We have reviewed three letters, M, F and B.  Next week we will add a vowel, A, and begin Word Families with the –am family.  The children have been introduced to the word Me.  They will learn “a” by itself is a word.  For those already in the know we will begin a small group reading together.  To date, I haven’t stressed handwriting as I learn what level everyone is on.  I will soon begin proper letter formation for their first names.  I will use real first names, not nick-names.  Remember, proper letter formation is; first letter upper case and the rest lower case placed appropriately in primary lined paper.  This is homework, practice, practice, practice.
In our 2nd Math Packet we completed the next level of Positional Words including left and right.  We still need to work on this concept!  Next week we will begin the chapter on Sorting.  We will identify same color, same shape, same color and shape, same color, shape and size.  In other words, we will learn to sort by using multiple attributes.  Seeing what is the “same” is essential in learning to read as well.  So we cross the curriculum in much of what we do in kindergarten.
Friday, September 26, is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday.  We will do an apple “explore” all next week.  I use this unit to introduce the children to the Scientific Method.  We begin with what we already know, what we want to learn, and then what we did learn.  We will discuss and use our 5 senses to find out everything there is to know about apples.  It will include seeing and describing the different colors, how apples feel, smell, sound and finally taste with an apple tasting.  During this time the children will learn that Johnny Appleseed was a real person in history, John Chapman.
Thanks to ALL the parents who have come in to volunteer for all our assorted activities.
Reminder:  Monday, September 22, is Picture Day.  The children wear the regular school uniform…NOT the red Gym uniform.  But they need to wear sneakers (all day) so they can do Gym.
Have a safe and blessed weekend.

Peggy Piccariello

NEWS FROM ROOM 2
September 12, 2008
Dear Parents,
Monday night was a great time.  We had 100% attendance.  Your questions were very pertinent and zeroed in on what was important to you.  That was a lot better than hearing me prattle on senselessly.  I thank the people who volunteered.  The lunch/recess schedule for September is already out.  The new volunteers will be added to October’s schedule.  The Art Aide schedule is out for September and October.  The new volunteers will begin in November.  And the new volunteers for Library will begin in October.  We are still in need of volunteers for some PTO slots.  The needed Point of Contacts are for the BAZAAR and BUCKS FOR BOOKS.  The Parent Volunteer Meeting for PTO will be Monday night, September 15 at 7:30 pm in the Cafeteria.  If you have decided you can take on one of the positions come to the meeting and sigh on.
This week we continued letter recognition, phonemic awareness, concept of word and reading around the curriculum.  The children have brought home mini books.  Some of the books need to be reviewed, aloud, with the parents.  However, some of the books the children should be reading to you with varying degrees of help.  We do coral reading and repetition.  We are already building a sight word vocabulary.  Our Language Arts workbooks have just arrived.  Perhaps I will send home the pages of letters that we have under our belts already to do as “homework!”  We’ll see.
We are finishing Positional Words in math.  As I said, it is the application of this knowledge to other areas that is emphasized.  The next math packet will involve identifying objects by properties, i.e., sorting.  This will be done at ever increasing levels of complexity.  Our morning centers will include lots of hands on sorting activities.
Our first chapter in Religion was “God Made All Things.”  We read the Story of Creation from the Children’s Bible.  We discussed all the beautiful things in our world, all made by God.  We watched the video about Creation.  Also we watched Veggie Tales “Where’s God When I’m S-Scared?”  This tells us that God is bigger than anything we might be afraid of and He is all around us.  Next week Chapter 2 is “God Gives Us Light.” We will learn that Jesus is the Light of the World, He shows us how to behave to be happy.  I tie this in with our classroom “Choices” program.
We continue practicing our Good Choices.  The Pink Tokens may start next week as some of the children are having difficulty listening while I am speaking and following directions (behavioral - not academic.)  Do not be alarmed if your child tells you s/he received a Pink Token.  Some children may become upset.  Experience tells me that one Pink Token is all it takes for some children (-:   The children as a whole have made tremendous progress in mastering the “big school’s” ins and outs.
Yes, it is true; Mrs. Piccariello went home sick today.  Mrs. Toch was my super substitute for the day!
Have a great weekend and God Bless You.
Mrs. Piccariello
