Preparing for the VA State Fitnessgram Test will continue to be an important part of our PE program. Please read on to better understand the expectations and requirements for your child.
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th grade Fitness Testing:
At Porter, the students are busy preparing for the VA Fitnessgram test. Every student will be tested in these 4 areas:
1) Abdominal Strength and Endurance (curl-ups)
2) Upper Body Strength and Endurance (push-ups)
3) Cardiovascular/Aerobic Endurance
(15 Meter Pacer)
4) Flexibility (Backsaver sit & reach and Trunk Lift)
Our goal is for everyone to do their personal best and work toward achieving the standards for the VA Fitnessgram Award. Students have to score at or above the qualifying standards in all four areas of fitness in order to earn an award. In order to prepare for these areas of fitness, students are encouraged to stretch and exercise at home and complete their quarterly PE assignments.

Parent Involvement in Fitness Testing:
Here are some ways parents can help their child to develop and improve their fitness levels;
- Reiterate the importance and benefits of being physically fit.
- Find out which areas of fitness need the most practice by comparing their scores with the qualifying standards.
- Help your child develop a plan to improve their scores through routine practice. (Practicing at school once every six school days will not be enough to master these fitness skills.)
- Encourage your child to practice and exercise daily.
- Monitor and sign-off on your child’s PE Fitness Log.
- Parents take the challenge yourself. Exercising with your child is a great motivator!
