     Blessed Sacrament Art Room News
Welcome back for another great year of creativity.  I am looking forward to nurturing the artist in all our students.  Like many art teachers across the country, I am working towards a choice based art curriculum  with a focus on student oriented art works.  This is a very exciting trend out of Brown University's  "The Knowledge Loom".  You can find more information by going to their internet site and looking at the "Choice Based Art Education"
I appreciate all the donations of "beautiful stuff" ( bottle caps, cardboard tubes, mat board, wire and yarns etc) that have been sent in to our studio art room.  Thank you all.  As always we love to have company in the art room so feel free to come for a visit anytime. Mrs. O'Neil

   1st Quarter Art Goals 2007

Kindergarten:  Mrs. Porter’s class will be introduced to lines with different media.  They will focus on their own portrait and pictures of their family.  We hope to make them into little books.

First Grade:  The first grade will continue working on drawing skills by looking at animals.  They will begin with guided drawings of elephants and giraffes.  Later in the quarter they will create more student initiated animal drawings of their choice.

Second Grade:    The second grade works in various media.  They will begin to learn about wetlands and the birds  doing pen and ink drawings.  They will be introduced to watercolor wash techniques.

Third Grade:  Mrs. Charles’ class will  also be drawing animals and learning about animal families and their environments.  They will also create 3-d scenes using shoe  boxes.  Please send in  any shoe  boxes want for our artists.

Fourth Grade:  The fourth grade will be painting this year using the book
“Children and Painting” by Cathy Topal.  We will begin with an introduction to the tools we use and the procedures of painting with tempera paints.  I would like to be able to go outside and paint while the weather is good and the leaves colorful.

Fifth Grade:  This year the fifth grade class will be learning about printmaking in art.  They will start with a unit on monoprints.  This class will focus on books as works of art.  They will make several books.

Sixth Grade:  The sixth grade class will begin with the oldest artists with a look at the Chauvet cave paintings, and try to answer the question:  Why do we make art? Audrey gave us a great definition for art this week. “ Art is a gift to the world that is you.”  They will make little personal box cave art.  Later we will learn of Gilgamesh and Mesopotamia.

Seventh Grade :  The seventh grade will be working in 3-d this year.  The first project is a fun carving of an apple face.  They will follow with a sculpture made from carving plaster. This class is always happy to receive donations of wood scraps for sculpture bases.

Eighth Grade:  The eighth grade will look at how artists create and where they get their ideas from. They will focus on themselves, their family history and create personal Family Trees.

      Second Quarter Art  Update
Wow the first quarter went very quickly.  I thank all the generous people who have donated materials for us to create with in the art room.  As you may have noticed we love to "build things".  The kindergarten, first and second grade art show and concert will be Tuesday December 11th at 7:00pm.  I hope you will all come hear and see out artists.

    2007 Second Quarter Art Goals

Kindergarten:  The kindergarten students will be cutting and gluing with an investigation into collages.  They will then make drawings from observations.  They will follow with drawings from memories and then finish with drawings from their imaginations.
First Grade:  The first grader’s will also be creating collages and then move onto 3-dimensional paper reliefs and sculptures.
Second Grade:  Mrs. Leongini’s class will be learning about American artist, Romare Bearden.  Their  collage art will focus on families and holidays.
Third Grade:  Mrs. Charles’ class will begin figure drawings.  They will do some modeling and life drawings, cartooning and look at modern artist, Keith Haring.
Fourth Grade:  The fourth grade class is continuing with their painting.  They will also look at Romare Bearden and how he combines painting with collage.
Fifth Grade:  The fifth grade has done some wonderful monoprints.  They will begin to do repetitive printmaking using collograph plates they will make with mat board.  We hope to do some special Christmas monoprint cards.
Sixth Grade:  The sixth grade class is putting on a Greek play and busy making swords, crowns, helmets and a Trojan horse.  We hope to be on stage by mid to late January.
The Seventh Grade :  The sculptors made wonderful elderly apple-head people and they are finishing up with plaster carved pieces.  They will make several  painted reliefs.
The Eighth Grade:  The eighth grade class will begin artist studies of the elements of art and various media techniques.  They will be writing about the ones they find most intriguing.  It is my hope they will combine a collection into a unique artwork.

2008 the year will be great!
Wow this year has flown by. There have been so many great moments in the art room.  Your children are truly gifted creators and I am learning so much.  We have all been experimenting with the wooden blocks and pushing the limits of gravity.  Thanks to donations of wood scraps we have a growing collection. Please don't throw away any wood we could use it for our architects.
The fifth grade will be going on a special trip to learn about engraving and the new 5 dollar bill.  I am trying to arrange a trip to the Phillips Gallery for the second grade to study cities in art.

       Art: 3rd Quarter Goals 2008

Kindergarten: The youngest artists are making a small book with examples of drawings from observations, memories and imaginations.
First Grade:   The first grade class is experimenting with 3-dimensional art.  They are making paper and cardboard sculptures and will explore clay.
Second Grade:    Mrs. Leongini’s class is beginning a look at cities.  They will create several cites and learn about urban areas.  We are planning a field trip to the Phillips Gallery to look at  the “Art in the City” tour.
Third Grade:   The third grade is looking at artist Keith Haring and his colorful figures.  They will study cartooning and create their own cartoons.
Fourth Grade:   The fourth graders are painting and learning about colors in art.  They will paint in complementary colors and learn about tints and tones.
Fifth Grade:  The fifth graders are beginning to carve relief blocks for printmaking.  They will go to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to see first hand how engraving is done.
Sixth Grade:   Mrs. R.’s class is working on the props for their play about the Trojan Horse.  They will also start paper mosaics and look at the Roman mosaics in San Marcos Church.
Seventh Grade:   The seventh graders are in the middle of creating a 3-D cardboard relief  of a face.  They will continue the face theme with papier mache masks.
Eighth Grade:  The eighth graders are competing for the Iron Artist awards, focusing on the elements of art.  When they have completed these they will begin to study portraits.  They will each do some self-portraits.
Thanks to Mr. Phillips for generously giving us so much mat board.  We have become such great builders thanks to all the donations of beautiful "stuff". Feel free to come visit anytime.
            Spring 2008
The end of the year is coming at us so fast!  Thanks to all the kind people who have donated "beautiful stuff"  for us to make art with.  We can always use paper and woodscrapes. Please mark your calendars for the last fine arts night featuring the art of the middle school.  It will be Tuesday May 20th.
           4th   Quarter  Art   2008

Kindergarten:  Mrs. Porter’s class is finishing up colored collages.  They  will make some small handmade books and then have fun with clay and 3-d building.
First Grade:  Mrs. Molino’s class will be learning about fore, mid and backgrounds in landscapes.    Weather permitting, we will go outside to draw/paint.
Second Grade:  Mrs. Leongini’s class will make little puppets.  They will design and make a simple book and also  create a star-book.
Third Grade: The third grade will be re-introduced to still lifes.  This helps artists practice “looking” at what they draw, plan out compositions and understand negative space.
Fourth Grade:  The fourth graders are learning about watercolors.  They will do a guided painting of a dogwood blossom, a still life and hopefully go outside to paint.
Fifth Grade:  Mrs. Bernt’s class is hard at work designing and making books.  They must make at least one book featuring prints they made earlier in the year.  They will have another opportunity to pull prints from their carved plates.
Sixth Grade:  The sixth graders are making pocket weavings.  Towards the end of the year they will design and create a personal mandala.
Seventh Grade:  Most of the 7th graders are just finishing their papier mache
masks.  They are making pantyhose on hanger sculptures of heads and faces.
Eighth Grade:  The eighth graders are learning about self-portraits.  They will
draw a self-portrait, make small personal shrine self-portraits, and make artist
trading cards for themselves and their friends.
End of a great year in the Art Room!
We had a wonderful year in art and I have many people to thank.  First of all I would like to thank all the terrific artists who join me and work with me creating wonderful art.  So many of you brought in beautiful things to create with, donated supplies and we all benefit from your generosity.  For me, there is not greater joy than to "create".  I love watching your children at work.  Thank you to the classes that gave me an end of the year treat.  You are very kind.  Please remember we are ALL artists and can create and add beauty any and everywhere.  Have a wonderful summer. Peace, Mrs. O'Neil
