We are reading our next novel, Crispin- The Cross of Lead. I noticed some students are not keeping up with the reading.  This will affect their grades.  Please be sure to ask your child about the novel.  Some parents find it helpful to read the novel along with their children to encourage greater discussion.  It is an interesting historical fiction novel (a Newberry Award winning book).  If you would like a copy of the book, please let me know.

More Past assignments!  (late work is accepted)

We are reading poetry and learning about their literary elements.

Sample Poem Explanation/Analysis:

The Toaster by William Jay Smith

This poem compares an ordinary item, the toaster, to a fierce dragon.  The author describes feeding the toaster piece of bread.  Once the bread is finished browning, it is handed back to him.   It is a very short poem, but it creates a very strong image through the comparison.

The author uses several poetry elements.  The most obvious is the use of an extended metaphor.  The poem compares a toaster to a dragon.  The author uses words like “jaws” and “he hands them back” to create the metaphor.  Also, the author uses rhyme in the poem.  These include the words red-bread and one-done.  It has strong imagery by using color words “flaming red” and the image of a dragon eating the bread and spitting it out again.  The poem is only one stanza.  The tone of the poem is a little humorous and a little scary because of the dragon with jaws of fire.

The students will be graded on this assignment.  Students will be graded on creatively, neatness, spelling, effort, as well as their written responses to the poem (identifying elements, meaning of poem, tone).
